Thanksgiving Stories

With Thanksgiving less than two weeks away, I am finally pulling out our books about Thanksgiving as well as ordering a few from our library.

The books we will be reading during these next couple weeks include:

Cranberry Thanksgiving

I wished we owned this book, but thankfully it is still available at our local library. You can find a great lap book to go along with it over at In the Heart of My Home!

Update: Hardcover Edition, Republished in 2012 and added to our collection!

An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving

When I was browsing through Honey for a Child’s Heart, I noticed this book. Being written by Louisa May Alcott, I was surprised I had never read it before! The description reads, “The seven rambunctious Bassett children decide to cook their own Thanksgiving dinner after their parents leave to tend a sick grandmother. Minor catastrophes and understandable chaos add to the charm of this rediscovered family classic. It is sentimental and perfect for the holidays.” I can’t wait to read it!!!

A Pioneer Thanksgiving: A Story of Harvest Celebrations in 1841

“A weaving together of stories, information, and activities to create a tapestry of pioneer life. Wonderful illustrations, great family book.” (Honey for a Child’s Heart)

. . . If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620

What kind of ship was the Mayflower? How did the Pilgrims feel when they saw land? What was the first building in Plymouth? In lively question-and-answer style, this fact-filled book answers all sorts of questions about the Pilgrims’ journey on the Mayflower and their first year in America.” (Amazon)

The Thanksgiving Story

This is one of our favorites… which just might have something to do with the fact that it was one of my favorites as a child! 😉

“Giles, Constance and Damaris Hopkins are aboard the Mayflower, overcrowded when the Speedwell turns back to England. On the journey, the children’s baby brother is born and named Oceanus; he will be one of the smallest in the company of settlers who endure the terrible first year in the New World and gather to celebrate the harvest the next November. The story ends with the great feast to which the colonists invited the Indian chief Massasoit, Squanto and their people who had helped the strangers survive hunger, cold and sickness.” (Amazon)

A Thanksgiving Turkey

“Gorgeous illustrations in a story about a boy and his grandfather who hope to shoot a wild turkey in the woods, and then deliberately miss the shot. A wonderfully tender story about youth and old age.” (Honey for a Child’s Heart)

And especially for my littlest ones:

One Little, Two Little, Three Little Pilgrims
and
This First Thanksgiving Day: A Counting Book

If you have a moment, I would love to hear about any of your favorite Thanksgiving books! Maybe our library will have them, and we can check them out too!

I always love book suggestion posts the best. I only had two of those books in my Thanksgiving basket, so I went to check to see if my library had any available. Of course they are all checked out by now. I’ll make sure to make a note of them for next year, though.

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.
