Last month, Rascal made a Ten Commandments Lap Book, as he was preparing for his First Confession. The idea came from The Ultimate Lap Book Handbook, and it was a very simple.
This Lap Book is made with a Basic Fold (Shutter Fold), and then cut into the shape of stone tablets. The directions recommend sponge painting the Lap Book, using a mix of gray and brown, to resemble stone, but we didn’t have either of those colors, and our attempt to mix white and black to make gray was a complete failure, since our black paint has changed colors?? Oh well… Rascal resorted to just coloring the cover, which doesn’t look as neat, but works… He then used cut out letters to spell “The Ten Commandments” on his cover.
Next we made 10 small “Hamburger Folds” from gray card stock that was 4″x3.” Rascal cut them to resemble tablets as well, and glued them into his Lap Book.
We printed out the Ten Commandments and glued one inside each tablet. (The book recommends gluing them to the outside and explaining them on the inside, but Rascal wanted them on the inside.)
- I am the Lord, thy God; thou shalt not have strange gods before Me.
- Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
- Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.
- Honor thy father and thy mother.
- Thou shalt not kill.
- Thou shalt not commit adultery.
- Thou shalt not steal
- Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
- Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife
- Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods.
He then numbered each Commandment on the outside of his mini tablets. To fill in the extra room, Rascal did a bit of copy work from Exodus. He choose Exodus 32: 15-16:
And Moses returned from the mount, carrying the two tables of the testimony in his hand, written on both sides, and made by the work of God; the writing also of God was graven in the tables. ~ Exodus 32:15-16

For the back cover, Rascal colored a page from Stories from the Old Testament.

Mary ~ I guess I didn’t mention that in this post, did I? We made this one from a plain manilla file folder. (Sometimes we use colored file folders too…) If you click on the link “Basic Fold” in my post, it will show you how to fold it to make a Lap Book.

GREAT job!!! The 10 commandment lap book is terrific! Love it! Thank you for sharing. I’ve also sent it to my daughter to inspire her with her young ones (grin). Isn’t it fun to be able to say I like the idea, perhaps to use at home with my young ones, but also perhaps, so will my grandbabes? LOL It’s a double bonus for me over here to see this post today. hee hee (grin, grin, grin)
Oh, and by the way; Your new blog spring clean is lovely, however did you change things around like that without losing your content. On a very stressful day I clicked too quickly, lost my template and find it time consuming to get it all right again. One day, one day. Any tips to pass along would be most welcomed.

I teach toddlers in a Sunday School Class on Sundays. My toddlers are 2-4 years of age and we are studying the ten commandments. I love the book idea that Rascal made but instead of typing (because the children cannot read or write just yet) the entire commandment, I shorted them so they could understand what each meant. Example: #1 – love me, #2 – worship me, etc. It was great fun and they children basically glued everything down and colored the picture after listening to the story of Moses going up the mountain to meet Jesus. I also made a mountain and a figure of moses so the children could see what happened and just near hear it. Loved it.
