Celebrating Pentecost, the Birthday of the Church! :: 2010 Edition

~ Completed Garden of the Good Shepherd Calendar~

I still need to take a picture of the homemade Garden of the Good Shepherd Posters, which a couple of the children made this Easter season using Charlotte’s printables

Our Windsock also made a nice decoration for Pentecost!

Vanilla Steamers made in our Cocoa-Latte Maker

Yummm!!!

~ Pentecost Salads for with Dinner~

Twelve Fruit Salad in honor of the twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit
This year our salad included:  Kiwi, Raspberries, Blackberries, Strawberries, Blueberries, Red Grapes, Green Grapes, Cantaloupe, Pineapple, Oranges, Grapefruit, and Apple.

“Tongues of Fire” Spinach Salad

A little “white” reminder of the Trinity
I also served red potato salad with our barbecued Hamburgers and Hot dogs.
~ Our Cake for Pentecost ~

This year we opted for a white CHEESEcake instead of our usual white cake.    I picked one up from Costco and just added the candles (representing Christ our Light and the 12 Apostles and their tongues of fire) and the Strawberries (representing the 12 Fruits and 7 Gifts of the Holy Ghost).  I was disappointed that the guy at Costco just threw it back in my cart resulting in a big crack, but other than that it worked wonderfully and was so delicious!

Rose was wondering just what all this was about. . . Perhaps next year she will be more interested in creating a “mighty wind” with her brothers and sisters!
Teach me, Divine Spirit, to know and seek my last end; grant me the holy fear of God; grant me true contrition and patience. Do not let me fall into sin. Give me an increase of faith, hope and charity, and bring forth in my soul all the virtues proper to my state in life.

Make me a faithful disciple of Jesus and an obedient child of the Church. Give me efficacious grace sufficient to keep the Commandments and to receive the Sacraments worthily. Give me the four Cardinal Virtues, Your Seven Gifts, Your Twelve Fruits. Raise me to perfection in the state of life to which You have called me and lead me through a happy death to everlasting life. I ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Thanks so much for sharing. I'm not a cradle Catholic but I so want to share my faith with my children. Today, I visited my son's class at his Catholic school and read from The Very First Christians, made the windsock and gave everyone powdered donuts. Thanks for all the great ideas!

Jessica… It looks like you had a beautiful celebration. We made a windsock using your idea/patterns. We also used your cake/candle idea… but with 12 red velvet cupcakes. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas. My friends and I love your blog! You are like a rock star! When you have commented on my blog recently I have been so psyched. Wish we lived closer!
    God bless!

So great!! I went for teh store bought cake too yesterday. It meant I could spend the afternoon with my kids instead of baking. Your kids look so sweet and happy. I had planned on getting some powdered donuts at the store on the way home from mass, but it was Fellowship Sunday breakfast after mass with and they had the donuts there along with other yummy treats. So it worked out just perfect.

Love the kids on the table. 🙂 That is always my favorite because it shows that intense curiosity! We had a busy afternoon so I just made "Pentecost Pizza" (cut the pepperoni into flame shapes) and I think next year if I do that I will add the red, orange and yellow pepper "tongues" like in your salad… I always get good ideas from you, Jessica. 🙂 Last year on Pentecost, you will remember, we were received into the church. I was alternately weepy all afternoon remembering our beautiful day. We put the boys' baptism pics on the altar and used their candles at the table. God bless!

    Hi Jessica,

I've been a big fan of your blog since I started homeschooling my kids about a year ago. Thanks for the many great ideas. My kids and I did the windsock and we are using it interactively to pray the kids Pentecost novena. They LOVE it!

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.
