I love incorporating our beautiful Catholic Faith in the gifts that I give, including gifts for my husband. One year I gave him a beautiful crucifix for our bedroom and another year I found the Antique Vintage French Crucifix at a local antique store for him. The two-tone St. Benedict Crucifix that is in our “new” (hard to believe it’s been nearly four years since we began our remodel/addition!) addition was another gift I purchased for him. Last year on Father’s Day I was so excited to give him a copy of The Catechism in Pictures which I had ordered during the Adoremus Books annual Easter sale! I mentioned it last December but wanted to share a few more pictures with you all.
This book is gorgeous!
Originally published in 1909 and reprinted in 2009, The Catechism in Pictures is a large hardcover book, measuring 13 x 10 1/2 inches. It has 125 pages, 69 of which are full-color traditional and inspiring pictures. The page ends are gold gilled and there is even a red ribbon page marker.
It includes 66 chapters covering many topics including: the Creed, the Sacraments, the Ten Commandments, the Commandments of the Church, Prayer, the Last Things, Sin, Virtue, and the Works of Mercy.
Oh, thank you for sharing, Jessica! That is indeed a gorgeous book and will have to go on my 'ideas for future gifts' list. So beautiful, and you know how we love art around here.
Speaking of books, have you selected your Lenten reading yet for this year? The Come, Lord Jesus you recommended for Advent was so well received here I was wondering what you are planning for Lent. 🙂
Thank you, as always, for all that you share here! God bless!
I've seen that book in catalogs in the past but I never realized it had full color illustrations. Thank you for sharing pictures of it. Who's the publisher for the book?
Inside the book it says that the English edition was reprinted by "Salve Regina Publications" in India – which matches the Amazon listing. I'm not familiar with them. According to Adoremus Books, it looks like they list Angelus Press as the wholesaler/publisher for the book… I'm not sure if the two are connected or not.
Yes, your family would really love The Catechism in Pictures, Kimberlee!
Lenten Reading. . . I haven't ordered a copy to look through, and there aren't any reviews on Amazon yet, but I think I'm going to go with Meditations for Lent by Bishop Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1627-1704) which was recently translated by Christopher Blum and reprinted by Sophia Institute Press. From what I've been able to see from the description and "looking inside" over at Amazon it looks excellent. If we end up loving it, I'll probably purchase Meditations for Advent for this next Advent. 🙂
Thank you so much, Jessica! I was thinking of getting Mother Mary Francis' Anima Christi because we enjoyed her writing so much during Advent, but I was also hoping for something specifically for Lent. I reckon this book you mention goes along with the OF readings, but like the Advent book the themes will be universal enough that it doesn't matter (as we go to the EF daily). I'm guessing you'll post about it when you get your hands on a copy and let us know what you think. 🙂 Thanks again, it sounds excellent!
I thought it was an Angelus Press catalog where I originally saw the book. I wonder if maybe they just sell it and don't publish it.
What a coincidence! This morning, I woke up thinking that one of these days I need to share The Catechism in Pictures. It is such a treasure. I purchased it, at Fr. S.'s recommendation from Fraternity Publications (I like to support them whenever I can) when it was republished in 2009. I have since recommended it to others via email, but have failed to do so on my blog. It is also used as a resource in our parish's First Communion class.
I'm hoping to read Anima Christi sometime this year too. Even though it isn't specifically for Lent, it would still be very appropriate, don't you think? And, yes, I'll be sure to share what I think once I get a copy of Meditations for Lent. I am not sure which readings the book goes along with, but like you said the themes would be universal, especially since these sermons were given back before we had both the OF and EF. You are so blessed to have access to the EF daily!
I forgot to mention that Fr. S. actually showed me an older copy with the French on the pictures which I preferred because it blended better with the pictures. I think that Father's copy may have been printed by Little Flower Family Apostolate, but they no longer sold it at the time that he shared the book with me. After seeing his copy, I anxiously awaited the republication. 🙂
Excellent selection!!!
Salve Regina publications is the small print company for the SSPX in India.
What a gorgeous book. Might have to put it on my wishlist to buy for our family. Steve would love it.
A beautiful book! I think I might buy a copy for my new granddaughter's baptism next Sunday.
Jessica– do you ever use the magnificat or In Conversation with God for Lent or Adent? I have enjoyed both in the past. Something new would be nice but I thought I might toss that out there anyway.
Thank you so very much for your generous suggestions of books and other religious gift ideas. You are a wonderful resource for internet shopping as we live pretty far out in the country!!
This is a beautiful book, I will look about it for my own catechism inspiration. Thank you for sharing Jessica and all my prayer for you and your family.
How stunning! Methinks all Church books should be that well-made and beautiful.

A beautiful book to be sure! Thank you for sharing!
Beautiful book indeed!
Jessica, I just wanted to let you know how much your blog has been a bright spot in my life over the years … You inspire me and encourage me with your ideas on how to make the Faith come alive for children! I'm having a little fun over at my blog this morning by nominating you for the Sunshine Award, which is passed on by bloggers to other bloggers who "positively and creatively inspire others in the blogospere." Check it out! You don't have to play, of course, but it was kinda fun 🙂 I just wanted you to know that you're a blessing! Have a fabulous day!
Oh! This is going on my wishlist for schoolbooks for sure!
Hi Jessica – I'm inquiring if you know where I can purchase several of the 'The Catechism' in Pictures. I bought one a few years ago and it really has become one of my most recommended books for Catholics I talk with. I would love to start giving them out as presents.
If you have some for sale, please let me know. If not, do you know where I can purchase them?
Thank you
