What Type of Homeschooler Are You?

Abraham Lincoln You have a Bible and a library card what more could you possibly need? You prefer the Charlotte Mason Method of reading living books for everything: historical fiction, biographies, real histories, nature guides, etc. No soon-to-be-outdated textbooks for you.
Take this quiz!
This seems fairly accurate. I do love this style of teaching, especially for history. It does prove to be a bit difficult without a library card. However, the library is scheduled to open at the end of the month!
If any of my Homeschooling Friends are taking this quiz, leave me a comment and let me know what type of Homeschooler you came up as!
Super Woman… or just Super Tired?
My sister stopped by earlier this evening… While she was here she referred to me as “Super Woman!” Now this is definitely a step up from her last visit when we were talking about gas prices and she said “back in your generation…” Sheesh! OK, I am 10 years older than her, but what a way to point it out!
Anyways, we were talking about my wild and crazy active children, and she said, “I’ve always wanted to be a mom, but GEEEZZZZ!! How do you do it! Your like Super Woman! Do you think it is worth it??”
No… I am not Super Woman… I am just Super Tired.
It has been a long week. The kids were sick with colds earlier this week, which they decided to share with the baby and I. Last night, our little one started crying at just after 10pm, and he didn’t stop till I put him in the car this morning at 8:30am to go see the doctor. The diagnosis was, as I feared, an ear infection. The poor little guy has been so miserable. He is finally resting with the help of Infant Tylenol. (I should be too — but I just couldn’t help getting online!)
Is it worth it? Yes, children are hard, but given the option, I wouldn’t change a thing. Actually, an inexpensive babysitter and a dish washer would be nice, but you know what I mean.
An interesting thing happened today that really made me think about how blessed we are with FIVE kids.
An older woman stopped me while we were in Costco. She started counting my kids, “One… two, three… foouurrr… FIVE!!! Oh, my goodness!! You sure are a busy mom! FIVE kids?!” I nodded and smiled. I hear this, or some similar version, every time I am out with my kids, so I expect it. However, I wasn’t expecting what she said next. She looked at me and said, “You know, it’s hard now, but you will be so happy later. The one thing I regret in my life, is that I didn’t have more children.”
HOW SAD IS THAT?!?
I am thankful tonight that I will never have to look back on my life and regret not being open to children, even though tonight, I am SUPER TIRED!
I am off to get some much needed rest! Good-night!
The Chapel Veil
Reading Amy’s post, as well as the post she linked to, were so very timely for me today.
It has become increasingly difficult the last few months to wear my mantilla to Mass and take care of my dear little nursing baby at the same time. Yet, I have really grown to love wearing my mantilla and feel that it helps me stay so much more focused during Mass. Anyways, I have definitely been needing a bit of encouragement.
I ran across this article, which has been derived from a book in progress called The Unveiled Woman. I found it very helpful, and thought I would share it. I look forward to reading the book once it is published! In the meantime, I think I will re-read The Chapel Veil.
Happy Columbus Day!
The boys were very excited that today was Columbus Day! We are in the middle of studying Columbus in History. History has been their FAVORITE subject, and I promised them extra History time today. In addition, Daddy had the day off work, which was definitely a plus, as it always makes for a very lazy relaxed school day for ALL of us.
During teatime we enjoyed a treat of Spiced Apple Cider and Pumpkin Spice Cookies in honor of Columbus, while we read and discussed a number of poems, thanks to Regina.
Just leave it to Dawn to find a craft or activity for ANY occasion! The boys especially loved making ships out of the couch cushions… and my DH was just commenting on how the couches needed vacuuming.
**Note the different size ships, the Nina being the smallest, the Pinta with extra sails since it was the fastest, and the Santa Maria being the biggest at over a whole whopping 80 feet long!
Hope you all had a nice Columbus Day too!
Animal Crackers and Cocoa to drink…
Animal crackers and cocoa to drink,
That is the finest of suppers I think;
When I’m grown up and can have what I please
I think I shall always insist upon these.
What do YOU choose when you’re offered a treat?
When Mother says, “What would you like best to eat?”
Is it waffles and syrup, or cinnamon toast?
It’s cocoa and animals that I love most!
The kitchen’s the coziest place that I know;
The kettle is singing, the stove is aglow,
And there in the twilight, how jolly to see
The cocoa and animals waiting for me.
Daddy and Mother dine later in state,
With Mary to cook for them, Susan to wait;
But they don’t have nearly as much fun as I
Who eat in the kitchen with Nurse standing by;
And Daddy once said, he would like to be me
Having cocoa and animals once more for tea!
Christopher Morley (1890-1957)
The kids were THRILLED with their Animal Crackers and cocoa… As for me, I think, if I could have anything right now, it would be a Muddy Mt.Ashland Mocha from Human Bean and an Apple Fritter… But then, neither of those are allowed on my diet. Oh well!
Please leave a comment for the kids and I, and tell us: “What would you like best to eat?”

Whale-wiches
The study of Columbus, earlier today, lead us to talking about the sea, and then to the fish/mammals that live in the sea… This eventually lead us to talking about whales–for some reason the boys have been very interested in whales lately. We discussed the different types of whales and tried finding pictures of them in a few of our Usborne books.
Any ways, when I went to make lunch I remembered a cool little whale sandwich the boys have been begging to make for quite some time. PLUS, I just happened to grocery shop last night and have everything to make it!! So we all made lunch together, and here are the results:
A LOVE of HISTORY
Today we moved on from learning about Leif Erickson to Christopher Columbus. I can not say enough good things about the Early American History Course we are using. I am so thankful to my dear friend Trina who got me all excited about “living” history books this summer!
Right now the boys are working on their coloring/notebook page for the day, which is actually a page out of Columbus by Ingri and Edgar D’Aulaire. I love that some of the pictures in the book are black and white. They are perfect to color and paste into their History Period Notebooks.
We added a bit of Geography by finding Genoa, Italy (where Columbus was born) on the map. I also found this printout for the boys to add to their notebooks as well.
I am going to start looking for a craft to do on Monday, Columbus Day. If any one has any suggestions or ideas please leave them for me!!!
Another Quiz
Wow! You’re really cooking and I don’t mean in the cafeteria! You’re on fire for the Catholic faith and really know your stuff! Congratulations!
Wow!! That was pure luck since, honestly, I did guess on a few of the questions… It was a pretty hard little quiz!

Little Flowers for St. Therese
Needless to say, St. Therese is my FAVORITE saint! She has always been there for me when I have asked for her help, especially during a few difficult times of my life.
Today was her feast day, on the Traditional Catholic Calendar. This is the calendar that is still used by the Tridentine Rite. It is the calendar that was used by the Church before the reforms of 1955-1962. It is also the one that my brother-in-laws, who are priest with the FSSP, follow.
I surprised the kids this morning by making them little miniature éclairs before they woke up, in honor of St. Therese. They were a favorite of hers, as Dawn mentioned. Since we were heading to town for a Little Flower meeting this afternoon, we had them with breakfast.
I thought it was so cool that my oldest DD has her first Little Flower meeting today. She was so excited, as you can tell in the photo! The boys have been in Blue Knights for the last year, as well as participating in various sports, but this will be the first extra curricular activity that I have ever put her in. She really enjoyed it!
I wish I had the St. Therese Glory Story CD. It would have been nice to listen to on the trip to town today. We borrowed it once from a friend, and the kids were asking about it. It is on my list of things to purchase someday… Maybe by next year.
