Santa Lucia Day in the Morning {Our 2012 Celebration}

by | Dec 14, 2012 | Advent and Christmas, Bunk Beds, Christmas 2012, St. Lucy | 20 comments

Night walks with a heavy step
Round yard and hearth,
As the sun departs from earth,
Shadows are brooding.

There in our dark house,
Walking with lit candles,
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

Night walks grand, yet silent,
Now hear its gentle wings,
In every room so hushed,
Whispering like wings.

Look, at our threshold stands,
White-clad with light in her hair,
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

Darkness shall take flight soon,
From earth’s valleys.

So she speaks
Wonderful words to us:
A new day will rise again
From the rosy sky…

Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!
Our little Chiquita had a lovely name-day celebration this year and just loved her pretty new statue!  We are also very blessed to have dear friends visiting from from the midwest.   It was a lovely morning in honor of this beautiful saint of light!

We have a big celebration as this is my baby boy's namesake day, too!He has Horner's syndrome (which effects his eyes) so I believe Saint Lucia is helping us with him. I don't have our post up yet but I do have a picture on my blog from part of the celebration at school 🙂

I tried this recipe, for the St. Lucy braided bread, and it was a TOTAL flop!! My dough didn't rise! What did I do wrong??? That flavor was good, but you can imagine it was quite dense and hard and blech…

Could you have made your milk too hot? Yeast is a living thing. If you pour hot milk on it you will kill it. I usually make the milk or water, only just warm.

Hmmm I hadn't thought of that and I have no idea. Are you supposed to test the temp?? Also I used almond milk because we have dairy allergies here. Does that make a difference. I thought maybe the yeast was old. It is several months old. How old is too old for yeast??

Could you please let us know where you found such a wonderful statue?

I also wondered if the milk was hot, instead of warm. That, or yeast that was too old, would have caused the dough to not rise. I'm sorry that it didn't turn out for you! I, too, had that happen one year and it was caused by hot milk.

Thank you everyone! It's been a busy few days and I'm just now having a chance to respond to comments.

I had been looking for the statue for a couple years, after seeing Charlotte's and finally found a somewhat affordable one on ebay earlier this year. It really is beautiful! It is a discontinued statue made by Dept 56.

There is currently one up for bid here. I have seen them sell for $30 all the way up to over $100.

What a sweet celebration! While looking at the pictures I noticed the boys bunk beds. Where did you get them? I need to get some soon and I like that those triple bunk.

They were actually my brothers bunk beds! My boys have had them since they outgrew their toddler beds. Last year when I was rearranging their room (once again, trying to figure out how to make the two beds fit the best without blocking the window) I realized that they could be stacked and stacked, since they were all the same! My husband wasn't sure what to think when he saw the triple bunk when he came home, but it has grown on him and the boys love it!

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.
