Our Lady of Czestochowa by Saint Luke

by | Oct 18, 2014 | FSSP, Idaho, Our Lady of Czestochowa, St. Luke | 7 comments

October 18th is the feast of St. Luke, Evangelist and Artist. Tradition holds that the original Icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa, the “Black Madonna,” was actually painted by St. Luke on a cypress table used by the Holy Family!

“While the icon’s location during the early years are hard to determine, it is believed that the icon was brought from Jerusalem by St. Helen in the fourth century and was enshrined in Constantinople in 500 years, before being transferred to the royal palace at Belz in Ukraine for the next 600 years, then arriving in its present home in the Jasna Gora monastery in Czestochowa, Poland in 1382.” (source: pamphlet)

During our recent visit to my brother-in-law’s parish we were blessed to be able to see and venerate the pilgrim icon that is currently making it’s way From Ocean to Ocean in Defense of Life!

Chiquita immediately recognized Our Lady of Czestochowa from her Shining Light Collectible Doll!

You can actually order a free prayer card that has been touched to the pilgrim icon here

Jenn shared some great ideas for celebrating the feast of St. Luke over at Catholic Culture and I just posted some simple cookies over at Catholic Cuisine

Happy Feast of St. Luke!

Thank you for the beautiful pictures of Our Lady. My son was confirmed a year and a half ago at this parish and took the name Luke or "Luca". We are blessed to be able to receive the sacraments here as we live over 3 hours away. God bless you and your family!

We just had this painting here in Wichita last week and I'm so upset I wasn't able to make it. We read a book on this a couple years ago for book club; I also have read so much on the lives of JPII and St. Faustina and so really enjoy anything with Polish history.

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.
