Santa Lucia, Saint of Light

Santa Lucia
by Katherine Hyde
based on traditional Swedish lyrics
Night treads with heavy step
Round yard and hearth
Woods brood in darkness now
Sun’s gone from earth
But through the darkness comes,
With brightness glowing,
Saint of the heav’n-ly light,
Our Savior showing
Maiden so sweet and fair,
Bright candles in your hair,
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!
Child of the holy light,
Banish the dark of night,
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

Night now goes great and mute
Silence rules all things
What is that murmuring
As of an angel’s wings

There on our threshold
White-robed and shining
Comes she with bread to spare
Our need divining
Maiden so sweet and fair,
Bright candles in your hair,
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!
Child of the holy light,
Banish the dark of night,
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!
Darkness shall soon depart
From vale and mountain
She brings good new to us
Light like a fountain
Soon day shall rise anew
Daystar is coming
In skies of rosy hue
Salvation’s dawning
Maiden so sweet and fair,
Bright candles in your hair,
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!
Child of the holy light,
Banish the dark of night,
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

Love this! You did a wonderful job. LOVE the candle crowns for your girls. Had no time to do much here but did make it out in the evening to drive around and look at Christmas lights!

Is it really only 11 days till Christmas?!

The nightgowns the girls are wearing in this post were from Vision Forum years ago – from their "Beautiful Girlhood Collection" – and they came with a pink ribbon on them which I removed for Santa Lucia Day. They were too big when I first purchased them, but we cinched them up with the red sash and they were able to reuse them for years!

I blogged about some other options here: Dress Suggestions for Santa Lucia Day

Last Christmas the girls each received one of the Megan Petticoats from April Cornell as their new nightgown on Christmas Eve. They have loved them and worn them all year.

This year I ordered White Flannel Nightgowns from an Etsy shop. We'll see how they work out! 🙂

As for the plastic crowns, one of them was a gift from a family in Norway. The other I purchased from The ASI Museum Store online. They don't seem to carry them any longer… This is a different brand than the crows that we have, but it's the closest I've found currently available: http://amzn.to/1lZY61g

I love the pic of the boys peeking out of their triple bunk to look at the lucia bun delivery. Sweet!

You have a beautiful blog. I'm so excited to see this Lucia book showing up on posts today! A friend of mine is the author, and the story is so beautifully written! Looks like your kids had fun – the last picture with the icing smile is my favorite. 🙂

Jessica, your pictures are absolutely beautiful (well, look at who your subjects are 🙂 ) We read this book too on the evening of St. Lucia Day for the first time and enjoyed it! We read the book after we looked at Christmas lights at a local garden and had a sweet pastry bread! I love your girls dresses, crowns, wreaths! So festive! I love the St. Lucy statue too! 🙂 So glad your feast day was blessed!

What a beautiful celebration. My Grandmother's patron saint was St. Lucy. Where do you get the white gowns? (Nightgowns like that are so hard to find! LOL) And where do you get the plastic crowns? Thank you so much!

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.
