Honeycomb Cake on the Feast of St. Ambrose

by | Dec 7, 2016 | Advent and Christmas, Catholic Cuisine, Christmas 2016, St. Ambrose | 3 comments

Today my little ones helped bake a Honey Bun Coffee Cake in our Honeycomb Pull Apart Cake Pan for after dinner in honor of the St. Ambrose, the honey-tongued doctor.
Legend says that when St. Ambrose was a baby, a swarm of bees flew in the window and clustered around his mouth, indicating that he would grow up to become a famous writer and speaker, one whose words would be as sweet as honey.
He is the patron saint of beekeepers, bees, and candlemakers.

I just shared the recipe over at Catholic Cuisine

While it baked we read the story of St. Ambrose and the Bees in Brother Wolf, Sister Sparrow: Stories about Saints and Animals from our December Book Basket.

Penitential Prayer of St. Ambrose
O Lord, who hast mercy upon all,
take away from me my sins,
and mercifully kindle in me
the fire of thy Holy Spirit.
Take away from me the heart of stone,
and give me a heart of flesh,
a heart to love and adore Thee,
a heart to delight in Thee,
to follow and enjoy Thee, for Christ’s sake, Amen
– St. Ambrose of Milan (AD 339-397)
St. Ambrose, ora pro nobis!

I love that cake pan! My husband and I are alumns of St. Ambrose University so we always celebrate December 7th! We had honey lime chicken enchiladas but now I really want that cake pan for future years!

I was so excited to share the symbolism with my kids and wouldn't you know this morning when my son enjoyed some honey on his roll he said "when we eat honey we think of the honey tongued St. Ambrose." How delighted we are to make our words sweet like his to draw people to the great Catholic faith!!!

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.
