On Saturday we celebrated our oldest son’s 13th birthday! This year he asked for a “Lord of the Rings” party theme and, after looking at many cakes, I decided to try and create a “One Ring to Rule Them All!” birthday cake for him! My inspiration came from The Art of Being Mama’s beautiful cake, however I opted to use a dark brown frosting for the writing similar to this cake.
I went out searching for a “perfect” non-stick ring cake pan, but ended up using my aluminum jello mold. I was worried that the cake would stick to the pan, but with a nice thick layer of Bake Easy! it came out just fine. I’ve been fighting yet another sinus infection, as well as an ear infection and poison oak, so I kept things extra easy on myself and used a “Golden” Butter cake mix for the cake.
I ended up needing 1 1/2 cans of Fluffy White Whipped Frosting. After spreading the first can of frosting over the cake I popped it in the freezer for 20 minutes to seal in any crumbs and then finished it with one last smooth layer of white frosting before spraying it with a can of Gold Color Mist (picked up at Michaels for just a couple dollars after a coupon).
For the writing I used a tube of Chocolate Decorating Icing with a Wilton Round Decorating Tip #5 and copied the words directly from our copy of Lord of the Rings. I probably should have practiced a bit on paper first, and I wasn’t able to fit the second half of the second line, but I thought it came out pretty well considering it was my first attempt writing Elvish!
He paused, and then said slowly in a deep voice:
‘This is the Master-ring, the One Ring to rule them all. This is the One Ring that he lost many ages ago, to the great weakening of his power. He greatly desires it – but he must not get it.’
You're so talented! I always look forward to seeing your birthday cake and party ideas! Hope you're feeling better soon.
What a fun cake! And very classy-looking for a first teen birthday year! Writing in Elvish is fun… seeing this reminds me that a boyfriend I had in high school would write me letters in Elvish, and although I don't remember now, it was pretty easy to pick up on how to read/write. I think you did great writing it with icing and not even with pencil for your first attempt!! Writing in English with icing is hard enough, ha!
I still haven't read *any* Lord of the Rings books, not even when I was younger… my oldest is starting 3rd grade, so maybe it's about time to start them! I am probably the only person who has never read one, because I keep hearing so many families, especially homeschool families, who seem to enjoy them so much.
I just love this Jessica, and cannot wait for the next Lord of the Rings/Hobbit event we are a part of – I'm baking this cake!
looks so great. icing spray!! i didn't know that existed. hope you get to sleep in some this morning.
amazing job! I love how you bake your kid's birthday cakes and always make them look spectacular, homemade and unique! I try to do the same for mine and you're always an inspiration. I've had a hobbit hole cake on my inspiration board for sometime (maybe you made it? can't recall at the moment) and I'm hoping my oldest wants that for his birthday this year! blessings!
Fantastic! You did a great job! +JMJ+
This is awesome! I can't wait for my husband's birthday so I can surprise him with a cake like this. I'm so glad you're linking up to Jen's 7 posts in 7 days too cause I look forward to seeing more of your creations.
Wow! My husband would love this, I'm just wondering how you got the "letters" to come out so well. Looks excellent!
Um…that rocks. Seriously, I can't even write that nicely in English, with a pen and paper, lol. My cake writing is so bad I am reduced to those nasty candy letters….how many packs do you think I would have to buy to write all that? lol….
What size jello mold pan did you use? How wide/deep?
