Feasts & Seasons :: Our April Book Basket

by | Apr 4, 2014 | Books, Picture Books, Saint Books | 3 comments

At the beginning of each month I fill a basket with books featuring the the various saints whose feast days will be celebrated during the month and place it in the living room. Throughout the month I will find the children curled up on the couch reading books they have chosen from the basket, either on their own or to their younger siblings.  I also choose books from the basket for some of our afternoon family read-alouds. Our collection started very small and we have continued adding additional books over the years which we have either purchased or have been given as gifts. Some are picture books, some are chapter books, and some are collections of saint stories. This post is a work in progress and I will continue adding links as I sort through our collection.

This list just includes our Saint Books for April. You can find most of our Lent and Easter Picture Books here and a few more here

April 1st, St. Hugh (Hist.):

April 2nd, St. Mary of Egypt (Hist.):

April 3rd, St. Richard of Chichester:

April 4th, St. Benedict the Moor (New):

April 4th, St. Isidore of Seville (New, Trad.):

April 5th, St. Vincent Ferrer (New, Trad.):

April 7th, St. John Baptist de la Salle (New) (Trad – May 15th):

April 16th, St. Magnus of Orkney:

Note: I wanted to note that the story of St. Magnus is a pretty intense and one that we probably should have saved until the boys were teens before sharing it with them – they were only 6 and 7 at the time.  Nevertheless, the heroic life of St. Magnus made a strong impression and he has remained one of our oldest son’s favorite saints ever since. You can see him dressed up as St. Magnus in 2007 here.

April 16th, St. Bernadette (Trad./some places) (New/some places – Feb. 18th):

I’m so happy that Saints for Girls will be back in print SOON!  This sweet book will be going in Rose’s Easter basket this year.

April 16th, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s Birthday:

April 21st, St. Alexandra (Hist.):

April 23rd, St. George (New, Trad.):

New additions to our collection this year:  (These will probably end up in one of the boys’ Easter baskets after they arrive.)

April 25th, St. Mark:

April 27th, St. Zita of Lucca (Hist.):

April 27th, Canonization of John XXIII and John Paul II :

With the canonization of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II coming up on Divine Mercy Sunday, we will be reading some stories about these two past popes!
Have you ordered a copy of Our Holy Father, the Pope: The Papacy from Saint Peter to the Present yet? You can find a short story about John Paul II inside!
New and Upcoming Releases that I’ve ordered to add to our collection:

April 28th , St. Louis Marie de Montfort (New):

April 29th, St. Catherine of Siena (New) (Trad. – Apr. 30th):

April 30th, St. Catherine of Siena (Trad.) (See Apr. 29th)

April 30th, Blessed Marie of the Incarnation:

Looking through your book list, reminded me of Easter baskets. I wanted to get your opinion on Letters to an Altar Boy. Thanks, and God bless!

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.
