Expensive Balloons

So… Saturday was one of our very old good friends birthday!

We all got together and went out for pizza… I couldn’t believe it when I found out that they charge $25 for EACH BALLOON that gets loose in there restaurant. Isn’t that crazy?!?!

Anyhow, last night I heard hubby tell the kids–after trying to recover the balloons many times for them–“Next time I am going to charge you 25 cents!”

This morning, all 5 of them were on the ceiling in one room or another… It’s a GOOD THING this didn’t happen at the restaurant!!!

Well… I am off to the dentist for a filling… Say a prayer for me, shots are my least favorite thing in the world!! sniffle, sniffle…

St. Therese

The Little Flower

By Twinkle Toes (age 4)

Prayer to Theresa of the Child Jesus

“St. Therese, you who are called the Little Flower, pray that I may always live as a good child of God. May I always do the little things of life extra well for the love of God. St. Therese, you love flowers and you wanted to give to Jesus the flowers of many, many souls. Now that you are in heaven, let fall upon earth a shower of roses by your prayers. Bring many more souls to Jesus. Pray to the Mother of God for us that she will smile on her children here on earth. Amen.”

Mothering Sunday

Today is Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday during Lent, also known as Rose Sunday, and Mothering Sunday. As with other Sundays the name, Laetare, comes from the first words of the Introit, “Laetare Jeruselem” or “Rejoice O Jerusalem!” It is a day that we take a break from the otherwise penitential season of Lent, just like on Gaudete Sunday during Advent. We are reminded that our salvation is at hand, Christ will soon rise from the dead to free us from the slavery of sin, and this austere season of penance will soon be over!! It is also a good day to renew our dedication to this holy season, especially if our Lent hasn’t been going quite as we had hoped.

At Mass, the priest may wear rose colored vestments. This custom originated since, as a symbol of joy and hope in the middle of this somber Season, popes used to carry a golden rose in their right hand when returning from the celebration of Mass on this day. In fact, back in 1051, Pope Leo IX called this custom an “ancient institution.” Afterwards, the pope would often give the rose to a church, shrine, city, or distinguished person as a token of esteem and paternal affection. It was from this tradition that today is sometimes called “Rose Sunday.

The other name for today is Mothering Sunday. It is called this partly because of the focus of the Mass on Jerusalem which is the mother church of Christendom, and is symbolic of the Church, our mother. Many customs have developed around this theme including: visiting your cathedral as the mother church of your diocese, visiting your own parish church where you were baptized or confirmed in (as your own mother church), or even visiting your actual mother and do something nice for her. It is actually very much like a Catholic Mother’s Day!!

I read on Catholic Culture that Mothering Sunday “became a feast day for the mothers of families. All the children who were away from home went back on that day to visit their mothers, taking with them “a present of money, a trinket, or some nice eatable, and they are all anxious not to fail in this custom.” The “nice eatable” was often a mothering cake. Exactly what this was made of seems uncertain, but at any rate it was highly ornamented and adorned.”

My boys were very excited about this, and since they are not quite old enough to make their own “nice eatable” for mom, I let them pick one out at the store this weekend instead. I think they did a very nice job too!

I hope you all have a very

HAPPY MOTHER-ing Sun-DAY!!!

WoW!!

As I sit here eating my–oh so good for me–mixed green salad with walnuts and cranberries, the countdown begins…

The countdown to what??

OH, I’m glad you asked!!

Next Wednesday will be my first WoW check-in.

What is WoW?

Well, it is a group that my dear friend Regina just started, in an attempt to embarrass motivate us into losing some weight! Now, not only am I on a mission to clear the clutter, I am also going to try to get into shape too! Honestly, in my case, I think the two go hand in hand.

The deal is, each Wednesday, a group of us bloggers will post how much weight we have hopefully lost, or gained if that is the case. WoW = Weight on Wednesdays.

From the sounds of it, Regina is working on a button for our sidebars, and we will be enlisting Our Lady of Perpetual Help to be out patron!

I am excited, since I would love to lose a bit of weight before our family trip to Nebraska in May!

So far, the Members of WoW, are as of now:

Regina: Ode to Us

Auntie Nee: No blog, Regina’s sister

Amy: Knit Together in Love

Michelle: Rosetta Stone

and…

ME

Now… stayed tuned till next Wednesday to see how much I have gained if I have been able to maintain or lose anymore weight, as I recover from the flu!

My Family

My family has not gotten to be ALL TOGETHER since 2003. Since then, there have been many times that we have gotten together, but someone always seems to be missing. Even though 5 of my siblings still live at home, the four that follow me (Jennifer, Sean, Jamie and Paul) all live in different states (2 of them on the other side of the country), which makes family reunions very difficult. Anyhow, I was recently given some pictures that were taken back in ’03 by one of my little sisters. This was pre-digital days for me, and so I was really excited about them… A LOT has changed since then… My little siblings are growing up!! In fact, I am quickly becoming the shortest person in the family. At this point, all my sisters are skinnier taller than me, and I am only taller than my mom and two youngest brothers. Anyhow… I thought I’d take a second and share a few of my favorites:

First, I just love this one. It is of the whole fam. Mom decided to finally hire a photographer and get a family portrait and individual shots for her hallway, and this one was taken by Jamie’s husband right afterwards, outside the studio in the rain:

I love the black and white, but here it is another one in color:

And since it was in the folder, here is one of my family… Isn’t it sweet? My, are we growing fast!

I love these next couple pictures of the twins and Scott. You can click here to see the three of them now. My have they grown! Scott always has thought he was pretty cool. Well, turns out he really is!! Love ya Scottie!

Here is a picture of my mom with her girls! You know… when my parents got married they thought they wanted 6 kids. Well, turned out God had 6 of each in store for them. Thanks mom and dad for being open to life. You have given us all the greatest gift possible!

You’d never know that my mom has had 12 kids, would ya?

Since I showed you us girls… Here are the 6 boys:

Back: Brian, Paul and Sean
Front: David, Kevin and Scott

As I mentioned before, I was the mean big sister oldest. So here is the youngest. My sweet little brother. He was born the day before my 18th birthday! He is also my God-son!

Actually, here’s a quick funny story… Back when Captain was a baby… Hubby and I were walking around a quaint little town nearby, and I was carrying Captain, and Hubby had my little brother (who was just 4 at the time) on his shoulders. This older woman said to hubby, “Oh! Your boys are so darling!” Hubby responded, as he pointed to my brother on his shoulders, “Oh, no, this is actually my brother-in-law!” It was hysterical… You should have seen the look on her face, of total confusion! Gotta love those big families!

OK.. I just LOVE these. This one is of me and Twinkle Toes with my sister Jamie and her daughter. The first granddaughters.

One more of Twinkle Toes and me–hummm, bangs or no bangs??

Can you tell that Twinkle Toes has been spoiled loved since day one:

Well, thanks for letting take a quick little walk down memory lane! Hope you enjoyed it too!

The Jesus Tree ~ Week Five

One of the things I love about both the Jesse Tree and the Jesus Tree is they tend to make my children listen closer to the readings and Gospel at Mass. This past Sunday, my hubby took the kids since I was sick, and when he got home, the boys ran into my room and said, “Mommy!! Guess what? We don’t need to read the story for our Jesus Tree today!! We already heard it at Mass!” I said, “Are you sure it was the one for today?” They said, “Yep!! It was all about the Samaritan Woman at the well!” Well what do you know, IT WAS!! So they hung up their symbol and colored the accompanying page I had found for them.

Anyhow, here are the symbols for next week!

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
