Positively Hopeful

This week has been full of doctors appointments. Monday I had some labs done, yesterday Chiquita and Snuggles had check-ups, and today I had my followup appointment with my doctor.

Recently I was asked how I am able to stay so “positive,” and it made me laugh. The truth is I have been really struggling lately. In the fall I was blaming it on being pregnant and sick, over Thanksgiving and Christmas I was blaming it on losing our baby, and lately I have been wondering if I was struggling with postpartum depression/anxiety again. However, the weird thing is I feel like I should be fine, but at the same time I feel so sad, overwhelmed, and emotional. (It takes very little for me to start crying.) I didn’t get it! In the past, exercise, eating healthy, and taking B-Stress Vitamins and/or 5HTP would make all the difference in my attitude, and the past couple weeks, even with doing all of those things, it was getting worse. On top of that, I have been able to sleep less and less each night. I am exhausted, yet I just lie there, praying that I will be able to sleep until 2-3am.

Well today we figured it out!!! A couple weeks ago, when talking to a friend about these challenges she recommended having my Vitamin D levels checked. Well, my results came back today and sure enough, they are really low. (Everything else came back perfect!) The normal range is 32-100 and mine are at 6. From what my doctor told me, low Vitamin D causes many of the same symptoms as depression. She also told me that the lowest she has seen in a patient was 2, and he was barely able to get out of bed in the morning and was SO sad all the time. A week later, he was a new person. YAY!!! There is hope!!!

My doctor wants me taking 1,000 IU each day in addition to my prescription of a weekly mega-dose of 50,000 IU. She said I should be feeling better within a week. I can’t wait!!

WoW ~ Week 1

Well, it is Wednesday already, and time to report my weight gain/loss for this past week. The week went better than I expected, even though I didn’t lose as much as I hoped. My goal for the week was to exercise daily. Over the past couple months I had become way too inactive in addition to eating too many sweets, and it was showing! Anyhow, I did it! I just finished my 8th day in a row of the workout. Hip Hip Hurray for me! 😉 Day one was hard, day two was next to impossible, and day three was just as bad, but by day four I was starting to get use to the exercise and it wasn’t quite as hard to get out of bed in the morning and stand up. Today I am still sore, but it feels good! My weight is only down 2.5 pounds. I was down more earlier this week, but I did host Bunco last night and I am sure that the Cherry Cheese Coffee Cake, Cheesy Sausagy Egg Bake and Peppermint Schnapps Mocha’s didn’t help this morning when it was time to get on the scale. I had better success with my measurements. Combined, I am down 3.5 inches, including a whole inch around my waist. I have a long ways to go, but it’s a start.

My Summary:

  • Week One Weight Loss/Gain: -2.5 pounds
  • Inches Lost: -3.5″

Last Week’s Goals:

This Week’s Goals:
  • Continue exercising each day using the DVD
  • Take the kids for a walk (we did this once this past week)
  • Track food every day, and work on making better choices (Friday is an exception and I am headed to Red Robin and Coldstone with hubby, for my free burger and ice cream, before we go to a movie. Any suggestions??)
  • Eat Breakfast (I usually feed the kids and forget about myself, then I eat too much later in the day.)
  • Drink more water, at least 8 glasses each day. (I haven’t been drinking near enough.)

Before I go, I am adding a “weight” picture for you all… NO, it’s not a pre-weight loss picture! It’s our hand weights. =)

My girls have wanted to exercise with me (I keep my boys far away from these immodest exercise videos). SO, they found some “hand-weights” for themselves and lined them up next to mine. You should hear them huffing and puffing — almost as bad as myself! (OH! and yes… I am a wimp… I’ve only been using 3 pound weights. I’ll have to pick up some heavier ones soon. They are all I have.)

To see everyone’s stats, or report your own, head on over to Regina’s!

The Jesus Tree ~ A Lenten Bible Study

I know the Christmas season has just ended, and we have a little time before lent begins, but I wanted to post a quick reminder in case any of you are planning on making a Jesus Tree this year.

The Jesus Tree is such a wonderful way to do a Lenten Bible Study with your children. We really enjoyed it last year!

I spoke with the owner of Scripture Trees (a very sweet Catholic mother) and they are still selling their kits, though their inventory is getting low and they won’t be making any more until next year. The price is the same as when I purchased ours a couple years ago, just $10 plus shipping. Scripture Trees is a small family business and she said they don’t have a website (yet) so you can either email them at scripturetrees[at]usfamily[dot]net, or call 651-426-2174 to place an order. (You will probably need to mail a check before shipment, so hurry. Lent begins February 25th!)

Also, as I made our ornaments last year, I posted pictures of them, as well as the bible readings (we used the New Catholic Picture Bible (NCPB) by Father Lovasik) and an activity and/or coloring page for each day. For convenience, I just added the links to those posts to my sidebar, and I’ll leave them up until Easter.

My Daybook ~ January 12, 2009

FOR TODAY: January 12th, 2009
My dear friend’s BIRTHDAY!!! Happy Birthday Trina!

Outside my Window… it is beautiful sunny day. As soon as the boys finish up there binder work and Math lesson, we are heading outside.

I am thinking… about my sister Julianna and about how much I am going to miss her. She just moved far, far away for a new job. I am so glad I got to say goodbye last night, though it meant jumping in my car late last night, and chasing her down on the freeway. (My mom had forgotten to tell her I wanted to meet her in town on her way through and then called me just after Julianna left saying, “If you leave *right now* you might catch her.” I jumped in the car, said a quick prayer to St. Anthony, and I got to town just after she did… However, Julianna didn’t hear my many honks (I’m sure the rest of town did!) or see my lights flashing, and our 1 stoplight didn’t cooperate with me, so I wasn’t able to catch her till we were on the interstate. I wasn’t sure how she would notice me in the dark, so I had to roll my windows down and turn the inside lights on. She *finally* looked over and saw her “psychotic sister” and got off at the next exit to say goodbye. Whew!)

I am thankful… that my mom offered to have Bunco at her house tomorrow night! (It’s my month to host.) Now I just need to show up at her beautiful home with the food and prizes, and I won’t need to kick my family out of our house for the night! 😉 Hubby is also very thankful!

From the kitchen… I am trying to stay out of the kitchen… There are still too many sweets in there, and I really shouldn’t have any of them.

From the school room… the boys are asking to create a Ziggurat (the instructions are in Old Testament Days: An Activity Guide), and I am hoping to make a 10 Commandments Lapbook with Rascal using the guide found in The Ultimate Lap Book Handbook. Rascal has been struggling to memorize them, and I am hoping that the Lapbook will help.

I am creating… weight loss goals for myself, once again.

I am going… to turn 31 on Friday, whether I want to or not.

I am wearing… a jean skirt, white tee, a brown Eddie Bauer cable-kit sweater, and my boots.

I am readingBoys Should Be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons. Even though I don’t have much time to read, I can hardly put this book down, it is GREAT!

I am hoping… that I have a good loss to report on Wednesday. Today will be my 6th day (in a row) of the 30 Day Shred workout, which seems to really be helping! It is a tough workout, but it is only 20 minutes and *very* effective. I thought I was going to die on the 2nd and 3rd days, but it is starting to get a little easier less torturous.

I am hearing… Snuggles saying “All done… All done…” over and over. He hears the girls say that all the time and just figured out how to say it for himself.

Around the house… the Christmas decorations are just about put away till next year. sniff…sniff… We still need to take down the lights. I wonder if that will happen this year! 😉

One of my favorite things… my Finders-Key-Purse. I LOVE it!! It is so nice not to have to dig around in my purse for my keys when I am trying to corral 5 children in parking lots. Since I am a rep for them, I have quite the stash in my closet, so I will give away another one this Friday like I did last year. I’ll have to see what designs I have… Be sure to check back!

A Few Plans For This Week

It’s going to be a busy week… I am months behind with my Aunts bookkeeping, and so with it being tax season and all, it has GOT to get done… SO, if I am not online much, you will all know what I am up to! I also have a few doctors appointments this week, and Bunco to host tomorrow night. Friday will be fun!! We will probably go to Mass in the morning, and my Aunt has offered to spend the night so hubby and I can go out! What a treat!!! I can’t wait!

A picture thought I am sharing:

Since we were looking through old Baptismal pictures yesterday, here is a picture from Twinkle Toes’ baptism! My hubby’s oldest brother was a Deacon at the time, and this was his very FIRST baptism!! Trina (who’s birthday is today!) and her husband are TT’s Godparents. My (super tall) little brother was serving.

Please Pray

I just got home from my doctors and turned my computer on to find this urgent prayer request from Mary.

Hello friends, a priest friend of ours have sent out an urgent email prayer request. Please please pray. Please sacrifice and pray. Lord Jesus, have mercy on us.

“Earlier this evening I had my last conversation with this young lady and her parents. Despite their apparent regret, they will be going through with the abortion tomorrow morning, January 12 at 8.00am (ET)–some of you may already have read this message after that time. It will be a chemical abortion so she will just take a pill at home that her “provider” already made already available to her. I was able to talk to Eduardo Verástegui this afternoon and he offered to talk to her. She wouldn’t talk to him nor anyone else about her decision. Let’s pray for her conversion in a very special way.”

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.  Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the unborn, pray for us!

Inauguration Day Mass Intentions

A couple weeks ago, I was sent this prayer request, and since it is such an awesome idea, I wanted to pass it on to you all so that you can help out as well!!

WHO: A few faithful Catholic lay people and priests. (Anyone can do this: stay-at-home moms, singles, retired people, students–anyone–and we can have a huge impact on our country’s future.)

WHAT: Have a Mass said on Inauguration Day for our new President. It can be said for his conversion or, “That our new president will work to protect the dignity of each human life.” Consider that St. Leonard of Port Maurice said that one Mass offered before death may be more profitable than many after it, and St. Anslem affirmed this.

WHEN: Tuesday January 20, 2009 Inauguration Day

WHERE: Throughout our country in as many Catholic churches as possible.

WHY: Because offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for an intention is very powerful.

HOW: Simply call your local parish and ask to reserve January 20th for your intention. Then send a check for $10 to the priest for your Mass intention. Next please choose three friends (or more) to pass this request on to.

I’ll be calling my local parishes this week to request Masses for this intention. Here is the list of Masses being offered (as of a couple weeks ago — I am sure there are many more!) Won’t you help us get YOUR parish onto this list?

Plans for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

This coming Sunday the Christmas season will come to a close as we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of The Lord. In addition to attending Mass, I’ve been thinking about, and searching for, some ideas of things that we could do, here at home, to honor this feast.

Food: (I posted both of the following recipes over at Catholic Cuisine.)

In her cookbook A Continual Feast, author Evelyn Birge Vitz shares a recipe for making a special treat called Christ’s Diapers (Diples). She tells us that, “Diples are “folds” in Greek. These cookies are sometimes shaped in bowknots or other fancy shapes, but for Christmas they are made in a shape suggestive of the swaddling clothes—or actually the diapers!—of the infant Jesus.” Even though our Lord was grown when he was baptized by St. John the Baptist, the sacrament of baptism reminds us of infancy. In addition, this feast closes the Christmas season, making these a perfect treat to serve on this special feast.

Since the christian symbol for Baptism is the shell, we can easily tie this into our dinner plans by making a meal with pasta shells. One of my favorite recipes, using jumbo shells, is Nacho Stuffed Shells.

I also plan to pull out some sea shells and our children’s Baptismal candles, like Mary suggested last year, and light them during dinner. What a perfect time this will be to tell the children about the Baptism of Our Lord and their own special Baptismal days as well!

Update: These Scallop Shell Baptism Favors would also make a yummy treat for the feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

Reading:

I chose a few books from our shelves about either the Baptism of our Lord, the Sacrament of Baptism, or our beliefs as Catholics.

Craft/Activity:

Almighty, eternal God, when the Spirit descended upon Jesus at his baptism in the Jordan, you revealed him as your own beloved Son. Keep us, your children born of water and the Spirit, faithful to our calling. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Cheap Toys

And no (Paula) I am not going to tell you all about another great deal! 😉

Snuggles was doing this for about 10 minutes straight before I grabbed the camera. It distracted him for a second and then he continued doing it for at least another 10 minutes. It was so funny! He had found these containers in a box of school “stuff” that needed to be put away. I’ll have to keep these out!

Amazing Deals on Father Lovasik Books and Coloring Books for Children

Photobucket

I know I posted about this last month, but as my orders arrive I am just amazed at how great a deal this really is, so I thought I would post it one more time for any of you that were too busy to read blogs over Christmas.

Amazon has been offering a whole bunch of ten-packs of the St. Joseph Picture Books and Coloring Books for only $1.50 (for all ten), plus most of them qualify for Amazon’s 4 for 3 promotion where if you buy 4, you are only charged for 3! They also qualify for Amazon’s Super Saver Shipping with a $25.00 purchase.

With the promotion this brings each book down to only .11cents each. At this price they can be used for so many different things including:

  • Birthday gifts for my children and their cousins/friends
  • Baptismal Anniversary gifts for my children and Godchildren
  • Nameday Gifts
  • Perfect for in Easter Baskets
  • Christmas Gifts
  • Favors for Feast Day Celebrations
  • Prizes for Little Flowers and Blue Knights
  • Prizes for All Saints Party
  • Fundraisers!

My favorites are the old original Father Lovasik books that I remember reading as a child. (I prefer the old more traditional illustrations that they have–for example I love this book about the Apostles of Jesus, in this new one the pictures of the apostles remind me of cheezy movie stars — not at all how I picture these much loved Saints.)

Here are some links to the Father Lovasik books I ordered:

I also ordered a few written by Rev. Jude Winkler:

And here are some links to 10 packs of Coloring Books (The Coloring Books are an even better deal at only $1.25 for 10 — after the 4-for-3, they are only .09cents each for THE WHOLE COLORING BOOK!!):

Before I go, I just want to warn you… If you end up ordering a bunch of these books be prepared for strange looks from your mailman when he starts delivering packages every day and questions from your husband on “just how much did you spend on all those books!” 😉

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.

Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.
