Morning Prayer
by St. Therese

O my God! I offer Thee all my actions of this day for the intentions and for the glory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I desire to sanctify every beat of my heart, my every thought, my simplest works, by uniting them to Its infinite merits; and I wish to make reparation for my sins by casting them into the furnace of Its Merciful Love.

O my God! I ask of Thee for myself and for those whom I hold dear, the grace to fulfill perfectly Thy Holy Will, to accept for love of Thee the joys and sorrows of this passing life, so that we may one day be united together in heaven for all Eternity.
Amen.

Escape the Dragon’s Lair :: 16th Birthday

Yesterday we spent the day celebrating Ranger’s 16th birthday! Other than booking an Escape Room for the birthday boy and some of his friends/family, I hadn’t done much to prepare before hand, but it all came together and he had such a fun day.
After breakfast, and while the cake was cooling, he and I headed to town. Our first stop was the DMV! Even though he hadn’t started studying for the test we decided to give it a shot. The long wait was worth it (he studied the manual while waiting) and we left with his Learner’s Permit. He’s excited to finally start driving! After that we got him his birthday Freeze from Dutch Bros, picked up take-and-bake pizzas, and stopped at the store for party supplies and cake decorations.
Next on the schedule was the Escape Room with his older brother, dad, two uncles and four friends!

What are Escape Rooms? They are like real-life video games or mysteries where you and a group of friends are put inside a room with 1 hour to figure out how to get out by finding clues and solving puzzles. Requiring team work, cooperation, and intelligence, Escape Rooms are a challenging and exciting game unlike anything else you have ever played.

Last year they completed the DaVinci’s Secret: Search for the Holy Grail for one of their friend’s birthdays so we picked Escape the Dragon’s Lair!

Can you survive and escape from one of the most fearsome creatures in existence?
For centuries there have been stories of dragons. All over the world, nearly every culture has myths and legends about these huge creatures.

While traveling you and a group of friends heard about another legend: The King’s Gold. The legend said that the gold could be found in the lair of a dragon. Reading through the legends, you are certain you have figured out where the gold is hidden. Is it really guarded by a dragon? If so, what chance do you have of ever getting the gold…or even escaping with your life?
Why just play a game when you can live it!

After making the rounds to pick up friends and drop them off at the Escape Room, I headed back home to quickly finish the cake and start cooking the pizzas.

The birthday boy requested a Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake and I decided to turn it into a “Piñata Cake” filling it with his favorite candy, following the “Escape” theme!  The cake itself was just three 9″ gluten-free chocolate layers filled with Reece’s Pieces. I used the Peanut Butter Frosting and Chocolate Peanut Butter Glaze recipes from Smitten Kitchen and then decorated it with Reece’s Pieces, Reece’s Minis, and Reece’s Miniatures.

The girls and I also made a Veggie Dragon…
… a pile of gold (Nacho Cheese Popcorn)…

… and a couple Salted Caramel candy Keys
The little kids all had fun getting dressed up while they waited for all the boys (and Ranger’s godparents) to show up for the rest of the party!

The birthday boy’s main gift was some money to put towards golf clubs for this upcoming season, but we did put together this little tower of treats for him too! He also received some gift cards from his friends, Sushi Go! – The Pick and Pass Card Game from his older brother (the teens had a blast playing it until after 11pm last night), and the LEGO Architecture Arc De Triomphe

Happy 16th Birthday!

Candlemas Day, Fair and Bright

O Blessed Mother, the sword is already in your heart. You foreknow the future of the Fruit of your womb. May our fidelity in following Him through the coming mysteries of His public life bring some alleviations to the sorrows of your maternal heart.

Traditionally called Candlemas, candles are blessed at Mass on this day to help us remember the words of holy Simeon who called the babe in his arms, “A light to lighten the gentiles and the glory of your people, Israel.” Luke 2: 32.

We also decorate cookies! I actually wasn’t home this afternoon and evening (a few of us ended up going to Ranger’s last out of town basketball game of the season) but that didn’t stop the kids from making our Candlemas Cookies with Drip Plates.

I left the supplies (and my camera!) on the counter and our oldest daughter took care of the rest. I loved looking through the pictures she took when we got back home.

Happy Candlemas!

Brigid and the Butter

Brigid and the Butter: A Legend about St. Brigid of Ireland

Long ago in deep-green Ireland lived a bright-eyed slave girl named Brigid…
Last Easter one of the girls received this darling new picture book in her Easter Basket. It is such a sweet addition to our February Book Basket and perfect for today’s feast of St. Brigid of Ireland.
Ostheimer Black & White Cow, Calf Drinking and Lamb Standing • St. Brigid from Catholic Folk Toys

Feast Day Activity:
Make homemade butter by pouring a pint of heavy cream or whipping cream into a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Have the children take turns shaking the jar until the butter has solidified. Pour off the buttermilk and use it to bake Traditional Irish Soda Bread!
Prayer to Saint Brigid
St. Brigid, you gave food to someone who was hungry although your stomach was also empty. I want to be generous, too. Pray for me so that, like you, I may do what I can to help others. Help me to care for people in need, even when it isn’t easy. Amen.

Stacks of Books on Epiphany {Little Christmas}

For a number of years now we’ve been giving our children Stacks of Books for Christmas or Epiphany. As our home library (and family size!) continues to grow the stacks for each child have started shrinking. Last year there were four books in each stack and this year we decided on three for each of our children, saving any extras for Easter which is going to come up so quick this year.

I always love sharing the books we’ve picked out so here is the list for this year:

Captain (age 17) received Battlefield Chaplains, John Flanagan’s newest release The Caldera from the Brotherband Series, and Peanuts Mad Libs.

Ranger (age 15) received The Hobbit Movie Trilogy: Heroes & Villains Coloring Book, A Hobbit, a Wardrobe, and a Great War: How J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis Rediscovered Faith, Friendship, and Heroism in the Cataclysm of 1914-191, and The Perfect Blindside.

Twinkle Toes (age 14) received Emily of New Moon, Emily Climbs, and Emily’s Quest.

Chiquita (age 12) received The Chronicles of Narnia Pop Up, National Geographic Guide to the Night Sky: A Stargazer’s Companion, and the (new and improved!) Spiritual Journal from Holy Heroes.

I had actually purchased The Chronicles of Narnia Pop Up (from Ebay I think) last spring for her 12th birthday to go along with the Chronicles of Narnia themed party but completely forgot to give it to her. Such a neat book!

Snuggles (age 10) received Picture That: Knights & Castles (Exploring History through Art), John Ronald’s Dragons: The Story of J.R.R. Tolkien, and On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness.

I’ve been catching this little guy wide awake in the middle of the night as he reads through The Lord of the Rings series… He is currently reading (and loving!) The Two Towers. (Hard to believe I was ever worried about his reading just a couple years ago!) He was so excited when he unwrapped this picture book about J.R.R. Tolkien and immediately read the whole thing, ignoring all the chaos around him.

Rose (age 8) received Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and Pride and Prejudice Seek and Find.

Still searching through the pictures!

Bud (age 6) received Winter is the Warmest Season, Mr. Ferris and His Wheel, and The Seven Silly Eaters. He loved all three, but Mr. Ferris and His Wheel (the story and all the gorgeous illustrations) was definitely the favorite.

Grace (7 months) received Jonah and the Big Fish, All Creatures Great and Small, and Love Is Patient, Love Is Kind.

Celebrating Epiphany

Out of the Orient they came ariding
Three noble kings, of humble heart and mild;
They came to see the Blessed Lord of Heaven
Descend to earth, to be a little child.
Precious gifts of gold and myrrh and incense,
Bringing God the gifts which God had made;
Low the kings in homage bowing,
At the feet of Mary laid.
–  The Kings, The Christmas Book

January 6th:  I haven’t been baking much this Christmas, at least not since recommitting to 100% AIP on the 1st, but there will be a crown shaped king’s cake for Epiphany! #thanksforthehelpgirls

Happy Epiphany! 👑✨ {we are saving the cake for after Mass tomorrow since one of the boys had a high school basketball game over at the coast and didn’t get home until really late tonight – but we still had plenty of Christmas treats and a family movie night}

Stacks of gifts from the Wise Men – also saved for after Mass

{pretty}

It’s not easy to make a beautiful cake without any grains, gluten, dairy, nuts, seeds, eggs, or sugar (basically just using vegetables and/or fruit with some honey or maple syrup) but this is the third year in a row that our girls have made one for my birthday! This year they decided on a Raspberry-Coconut “Cheesecake”. I’m still enjoying the leftovers! 🎂😍

I was also blessed with beautiful roses from my husband, white daisies mixed with pink flowers from my dearest friends and her family, and on Saturday my sister showed up with even more flowers!

{happy}

Coconut Chai Tea

One of the things I’ve been missing the most, since I went back to 100% AIP on the 1st, is my Coconut Milk Chai Tea each day. It had been my favorite cheat since the baby was born. I would make it with Coconut Milk and the Slightly Sweet Oregon Chai Tea. My girls ran across a recipe in one of my Autoimmune Protocol cookbooks and made it for me!

Heavenly!

OSF Tickets to Sense and Sensibility!!!

I’m a hard one to surprise with anything, but my husband had all sorts of surprises for my birthday this year including beautiful roses, an appointment scheduled at a day spa for a facial on (last) Saturday afternoon, and three tickets for me and the older girls to go see Sense and Sensibility opening night at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival!

{funny}

I joked that I wanted to go sledding so the kids could take a picture of me coming down the hill while they hold a sign that says “over the hill and picking up speed!” 😉 It’s been a very mild winter here though and we hadn’t had any snow within driving distance. The ski resort hasn’t even been able to open yet due to lack of snow… (We actually woke up to a light layer of snow this morning! It was slushy and has already melted but the kids were so excited.) Instead we ended up taking the kids miniature golfing and had the whole golf course to ourselves!

After golfing we ended up going to Texas Roadhouse for dinner. I didn’t think it was funny when our waiter made me sit up on a saddle and then announced to the whole restaurant “This is Jessica. She is celebrating her 40th birthday today!”  On our way home we told the story to the young barista at the coffee drive through. He responded, “No way! You don’t look that old!”  Ummm, thanks?

Someone got a hole in one. Hint: It wasn’t the boys!
{real}

I haven’t had a chance to get my hair cut since last March and it had gotten really long and dry/scraggly. My mom and dad surprised me with an appointment to get it cut and highlighted on Saturday with a new hairdresser. She even curled it for me! Even after getting over six inches cut off it’s still long but feels so much healthier.

Life is the Most Beautiful Gift of God

Our oldest son was invited to attend the Archbishop’s Discernment Retreat this past weekend. He ended up making the trip with a few local friends who were also attending the retreat. He made sure to pack along the latest t-shirt from our subscription to wear to the 2018 Roe v. Wade Memorial and March in Portland following the retreat. I was so excited to get a text/picture from friends who ran into him at the March for Life! He had a wonderful weekend and got back home safely late last night.

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
