Christmas Gift Ideas & A Special Prayer Request {Plus Another Sleighful of Giveaways}

It’s time for this year’s list of “Christmas Gift Ideas” and another “Sleighful of Giveaways” from my amazing sponsors!  (You can find last year’s list here, as well as even more Catholic gift ideas listed in my past Easter posts as well: 100+ Easter Basket Stuffers & Catholic Gift Ideas and Easter Symbols: Catholic Gift Ideas.)

Before I get started, I have another little favor to ask this year… Could you please offer a prayer for the newest addition to our family? We had quite the surprise at the end of October! In fact, it wasn’t until our oldest son asked, “Are you sure you aren’t pregnant? This isn’t your usual sick… this is how sick you get when you are pregnant!” that I finally took a test… He knows me well and has seen me pregnant a few times! 😉 I truly thought I was just having another one of my long cycles, I was sick because my hormones have been so off for so long, and that our soon-to-be-five-year-old “baby” was going to be the last! (We even got rid of most of the baby stuff just last summer…) But, he was right! My husband and I were so excited to see our little baby’s tiny heart beating during a dating ultrasound on the morning of the elections (we never did see heartbeats with our miscarried babies) and then I got another little peek at the baby during my first appointment with my new doctor last Monday afternoon. So far everything looks perfect! I wasn’t going to say anything yet, but I have such a hard time keeping secrets… I’ll be going in a week from Monday for some more blood tests and another ultrasound and would really appreciate prayers. Thank you!

When I started coordinating all the weekly giveaways leading up to Advent this year, I knew it might be overly ambitious, especially considering I’m homeschooling all seven on top of my work schedule this year, but I had no idea just how challenging it was going to be to get out of bed each day! pull off… It’s all coming together though and has been a lot of fun! I plan to host one last giveaway for you all next weekend focusing on the O Antiphons.

Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom to enter this GIVEAWAY for a chance to win one of 27 PRIZES with a combined value of over $1,500.00!

Baby’s First Christmas
♥ Due June 24, 2017
Since I have been so incredibly sick this fall (I keep reminding myself it’s a good thing!) I decided to ask our kids to help me with this year’s “Christmas Gift Ideas” post.  I had them each list nine of their past favorite gifts for me to share with you all. Here are their answers:

Bargain Priced Toys :: LEGO Lakeside Lodge

Last summer our nine year old received the LEGO Creator Lakeside Lodge and the Van and Caravan for his birthday last summer. They are both great sets!
I’ve been working on compiling a list with some of the kids past favorite gifts and just noticed that both the Lakeside Lodge and the Van and Caravan are currently 36% OFF over at Amazon right now!
I’ve never seen them drop that low before and am not sure how long those prices will last… Order them while you can, they would make great gifts!

Our 2016 Advent Book Basket and Printable Labels {Plus Christmas Mosaic & Picture Book Giveaway!}

Advent begins two weeks from today! This weekend I spent a little time sorting through our Christmas books to fill this year’s Advent Book Basket. I love that Christmas falls on a Sunday this year and we will all be able to enjoy FOUR COMPLETE WEEKS of Advent this year, the longest Advent possible!
Advent varies in length from 22-28 days, beginning with the Sunday nearest to the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle (November 30th) and embracing four Sundays. The first day of Advent can fall as early as November 27th or as late as December 3rd.
Years ago, when we didn’t have enough Christmas themed picture books to wrap one for each day of Advent, I would check some Christmas books out from the library just before Advent began, using Christmas Mosaic as a guide. We have added many books to our home library since then, giving one Christmas themed book to each of our children on the feast of St. Nicholas, and our collection has definitely grown…
In the past I have filled our basket with Christmas Mosaic titles and our children’s 35 Favorite Christmas Picture Books.  Last year I pulled out twenty-six of my favorites to wrap up.
This year I was having a really hard time choosing — way too many options — so I asked my husband and oldest daughter to help pick out twenty-eight books for this year.
A couple years ago I switched to brown paper, instead of the purple and pink wrapping paper, along with purple and pink ribbon (which I saved to re-use again this year) and homemade labels for each day. I love it! So simple and pretty.

If you’d like to use my little labels too, you can download my Advent Book Basket Labels for 2016 over at Dropbox.
As always, we’ll unwrap and read one book each night during Advent, following our family rosary. The rest of the books will be placed in additional baskets for the kids to read whenever they’d like during the seasons of Advent and Christmas.

Note: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Here are the 28 picture books that I am wrapping up for our 2016 Advent Book Basket:
November 27 – 1st Sunday of Advent:  A Christmas Manger (Punch-Out-And-Play Books) (OOP)
November 30 – St. Andrew: Waiting for Christmas: A Story about the Advent Calendar * (Note: Even though most commercial Advent Calendars begin on December 1st, Advent varies in length from 22-28 days, beginning with the Sunday nearest to the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle (November 30th) and embracing four Sundays. The first day of Advent can fall as early as November 27th or as late as December 3rd.)
December 4 – 2nd Sunday of Advent: The Gift of the Christmas Cookie
December 5: The Legend of the Candy Cane (OOP – Newly Illustrated Edition available here.)
December 6 – St. Nicholas: The Legend of St. Nicholas
December 8 – Immaculate Conception: The Legend of the Christmas Rose (OOP)
December 11 – 3rd Sunday of Advent/Gaudete Sunday: Bambinelli Sunday: A Christmas Blessing
December 12 – Our Lady of Guadalupe: Our Lady of Guadalupe (also love this awesome pop-up
December 13 – Santa Lucia Day: Lucy: A Light for Jesus (really love Lucia: Saint of Light
December 15 – Rose’s Birthday: The Three Gifts of Christmas
December 16 – Las Posadas: Nine Days to Christmas (OOP)
December 17 – O Sapientia: The Stable Where Jesus Was Born (Note: The one star review over at Amazon does not correctly reflect the text printed in our book – ISBN 0-439-47019-6, 2000 Edition OOP.  Perhaps it is referring to a different edition… I’m not sure. Ours is such a sweet book.)
December 18 – 4th Sunday of Advent / O Adonai: Manger
December 19 – O Radix Jesse – Bud’s Birthday: Miracle of the Poinsettia
December 20 – O Clavis David: Confederate Night Before Christmas
December 22 – O Rex Gentium: Small Camel Follows the Star (OOP)
December 23 – O Emmanuel: Song of the Stars: A Christmas Story
December 24 – Vigil of Christmas: The Night Before Christmas

U.S. Elections Lap Book

U.S. Elections Lap Book

This month we have been learning about U.S. Elections and we are working on the final details of our U.S. Elections Lap Books today as we wait for the polls to close this evening…

Four years ago we completed these Presidential Election Lap Books and Unit Study and this year we used the excellent U.S. Elections Lap-Pak from Homeschool in the Woods, as I mentioned in our 2016-2017 Curriculum Plans last month.  We’ve all learned so much and have had a great time creating all the mini-books.

In addition to the resources provided in the Lap-Pak, we’ve added in some books, videos, and this Pro-Life Citizenship Unit Study (for the teens) as well.

We still have a few things to finish… The kids are each writing their personal policies (social, economic, and foreign) and working on coming up with their own campaign ads and slogans.

I loved hearing the kids quiz each other while they assembled their lap books!

They also want to add the election prayer/novena we have been praying to the back of their Lap Books as well:

Most Holy Trinity: Our Father in Heaven, who chose Mary as the fairest of you daughters; Holy Spirit, who chose Mary as your Spouse; God the Son, who chose Mary as your Mother, in union with Mary we adore your majesty and acknowledge your supreme, eternal dominion and authority.

Most Holy Trinity, we put the United States of America into the hands of Mary Immaculate in order that she may present the country to you. Through her we wish to thank you for the great resources of this land and for the freedom which has been its heritage.

Through the intercession of Mary, have mercy on the Catholic Church in America. Grant us peace. Have mercy on our president and on all the officers of our government. Grant us a fruitful economy, born of justice and charity. Have mercy on capital and industry and labor. Protect the family life of the nation. Guard the precious gift of many religious vocations. Through the intercession of our Mother, have mercy on the sick, the tempted, sinners — on all who are in need.

Mary, Immaculate Virgin, our Mother, Patroness of our land, we praise you and honor you and give ourselves to you. Protect us from every harm. Pray for us that acting always according to your will and the will of your divine Son, we may live and die pleasing to God.
Amen.

AN ELECTION YEAR PRAYER FOR THE FAITHFUL WITNESS OF CATHOLICS IN THE UNITED STATES

By His Eminence Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke,

O Lord Jesus Christ, You alone are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In Your Church You show us the Way, You teach us the Truth, and You give us Your Life. Grant, we humbly beg You, that, always and in all things, we may be faithful to You in Your Holy Church, and to Your Vicar on Earth, the Supreme Pontiff, Pope Francis. Grant also, we beg You, that, in these times of decision, all who profess to be Catholic and who are entrusted with the sacred duty to participate in public life, may, by the strength of Your grace, unwaveringly follow Your Way and faithfully adhere to Your Truth, living in You with all their mind and heart, for Your greater glory, the salvation of souls, and the good of our nation. Amen.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of America, Pray for us.
Saint Thomas More, Patron of Religious Freedom, Pray for us.

New Christmas Books for the Feast of St. Nicholas {and a St. Nicholas Giveaway!}

The feast of St. Nicholas is one month from today! Every year on December 6th our children wake up to find new slippers (or sometimes as new pair of shoes for winter) filled with little treats, chocolate gold coins, candy canes, and new Christmas books.

I just finished wrapping most of the books for this year and have added Trader Joe’s Chocolate Coins and TruJoy Candy Canes to my shopping list. Now to start working on the rest of the Christmas list!
Note: You can download my St. Nicholas labels over at Dropbox with either Black or Green text.

I realized after wrapping all the books that I completely forgot to take pictures of the inside pages…

Note:  As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Here is the list of books my husband and I picked out for our children this year:

For Captain:

It’s getting so hard to choose books for our older boys… Not sure how much longer I’ll be able to keep it up, but this year our oldest son is getting this coloring book based on one of his favorite Christmas stories. Coloring while listening to music or audio books is one of favorite ways to relax. I think he will love it!

Illuminate your Christmas with the colors of mystery, charity, kindness, and the melting of old Scrooge’s cold heart in this opulent coloring book for grownups; travel back to Victorian London for a Christmas celebration filled with delicious repasts, elaborate costumes, intricate decorations, and iconic imagery from Charles Dickens’s beloved tale. Like the other books in the Coloring Classic series-including Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights-this one offers 37 wonderfully complex two-page drawings on heavy paper, each with a carefully selected quotation from the book, while the cover is embellished with red foil details.
For Ranger:
I have had such a hard time choosing a book for Ranger this year… I still haven’t decided! I’ve narrowed it down to one of the following two books: A Christmas Carol illustrated by Robert Ingpen (his older brother has the beautiful P.J. Lynch version) or Treachery and Truth, the story of Good King Wenceslaus which was just published by Pauline Books. They are both on their way!

The complete and unabridged text enhanced with more than 70 illustrations by Robert Ingpen Includes an additional story by Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Tree”

– OR –
Immersed in the historical background of the tenth century, this true tale of Good King Wenceslaus, as told by his faithful servant Poidevin, brings the reader into the Dark Ages. Fear grips the land of Bohemia as the faithful face betrayal and persecution under the reign of the pagan Duchess Dragomira. As she struggles for power with the rightful heir, Prince Vaclav, her foes forge alliances in secret despite the risk of discovery. Who will survive?
For Twinkle Toes:

We already had books for the girls, but when I ran across the coloring book of Christmas cards and envelopes I had to pick it up for the girls to share. They will love using it to send cards to their pen-pals. The other book is out of print, but worth picking up if you can find a copy.

“The twenty four festive designs include Christmas trees, gingerbread men, reindeer and more and are perfect for all ages to decorate and send to family and friends. Take inspiration from real life, or get experimental – try unusual colors and different materials to make each card truly unique! With enough blank space inside for a message, envelopes to customize and cute stickers to seal your card – this is the complete Christmas creative package!”
“Readers will want to pull up a creepie (stool) and gather ’round a roaring peat fire to hear every lilting word of Sawyer’s magical and haunting Irish folktale, first published in 1941. Orphan girl Oona, abandoned by her tinker kin, grows into a lonely, ostracized old woman longing for a home of her own. On Christmas Eve, as the legend goes, the wee people to whom Oona has always been kind oblige her in a special way. Gauzy, evocative mixed-media paintings convey a quiet yet powerful energy.”
For Chiquita:

This brand new book about Bubushka (with a pretty purple cover!) caught my eye for Chiquita.

“With beautiful illustrations evoking folk art traditions and sensitive storytelling, Babushka tenderly reminds us that nothing is more important during the holiday season than taking the time to show love for one another. This timeless Russian tale will warm your heart and fill you up with the joyful, generous spirit of Christmas.”
For Snuggles:

Though not exactly a Christmas book, this story begins on Christmas Eve and will be absolutely loved by our little Viking

“Based on a 1264 account documenting a true incident in Norwegian history, this engaging narrative opens during a 1206 Christmas Eve gathering at the home of one of the Birkebeiners, a group of brave warriors. A priest knocks on the door, who has in his protection a baby, Prince Hakon, and his mother; a rival band aspires to kill the child (who is heir to the throne) and to declare one of their own king. Soon a handful of Birkebeiners escorts the trio, escaping on skis across tall, stormy mountains. Caldecott winner Azarian’s (Snowflake Bentley) finely detailed woodcut illustrations, hand-tinted with watercolors, capture the serene snow-covered landscape as well as the driving snowstorm that impedes the travelers’ progress. In direct and compelling prose, Lunge-Larsen recounts how the two Birkebeiners most renowned for their skiing ability forge ahead with the prince, fortuitously happen upon a barn buried under a snowdrift and manage to keep the baby alive by feeding him snow. In a concluding note, the author explains that Hakon became Norway’s most powerful king during the Middle Ages and brought peace and prosperity to the country, making this rescue tale all the more gratifying. The stately art, which includes intricate borders framing blocks of text, neatly captures the historical and cultural aspects of this story.”
For Rose:

“The Christmas horse is on a journey to meet baby Jesus! Join him and his animal friends with the three wise men as they cross snow-capped mountains, swift rivers, and hot deserts to reach the peaceful stable in Bethlehem where baby Jesus lies in a manger. Enjoy the beautiful scenery as captured by Isabelle Brent’s stunning illustrations and experience the wonder as the pure-hearted animals and the wise men finally meet their savior and king. The journey of the Three Wise Men following the star is here told from the point of view of the three courageous animals that carried them: Safanad the horse, Gamali the camel, and Simbalo the elephant. Each one comes from a different land and possesses a unique skill. Together there is no challenge they cannot overcome in their quest to find baby Jesus. Verses from the Gospel help to tell the story. Also included in the illustrations are birds connected through legend with the life and wisdom of Christ.”
For Bud:

A Christmas Classic – 75th Anniversary Edition

“Way out west in Cactus county lived a horse named Calico. She wasn’t very pretty, but she was smart and could run like greased lightning. When villain Stewy Stinker threatens to hold up Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, will Calico the Wonder Horse be able to save the day? This gift edition celebrates the 75th Anniversary of this classic tale by Caldecott medalist Virginia Lee Burton, the author of Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel.”

All Souls’ Day Mass at the Cemetery

This morning we visited the cemetery for our 11th annual All Souls’ Day Mass.  Our oldest son has been serving for this special Mass every year since he was 6 years old. This year was the first year our oldest three boys all served this Mass together. This is one of the ways our family remembers and prays for the dead during this month dedicated to the Holy Souls.

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

We help parents and teachers weave the beauty of the pro-life message throughout all areas of study. Our program is comprehensive, easy to teach and brings the expertise of pro-life leaders from around the world right into your classroom. Covering a range of subjects that includes foreign language, religion, history, science and more, we have something to help your students embrace the dignity of all human beings from the moment of creation onward. This fall we released an engaging lesson for elementary students on the life and works of St. Teresa of Calcutta focused on her dedication to the preborn. For middle schoolers, we released a study on the beauty of the developing human person, and another on the fascinating life and pro-life contributions of Dr. Jerome Lejeune. High school students now have the opportunity to learn the truth about Margaret Sanger through our multimedia unit study uncovering the impact of her legacy on this generation and beyond. And just in time for the election, we released a lesson on pro-life citizenship which views the election process through a Catholic lens. Endorsed by Cardinal Burke, the Culture of Life Studies Program is helping parents, teachers and students build a culture of life.

“Behold Publications, LLC is more than just a publisher! Family owned and operated since its founding in 1999, we have developed great Catholic clubs like the Little Flowers Girls’ Club and Blue Knights Catholic Boys’ Clubs for Catholic girls and boys ages 5 and up. What makes these clubs unique is that they are at their core faithfully Catholic. We don’t “tack on” Catholic identity as other clubs might, but begin and end with a Catholic world view. We also believe that local clubs best operate the way they see fit, so there is no national organization, policies, registration or dues. “The mission of Peanut Butter & Grace is to help Catholic parents raise children who know and love Christ and his Church. We do this by providing digital and print resources that assist parents in forming their children in the faith within the daily life of their family. All of our products are made for Catholic parents—either to use themselves (think of 77 Ways to Pray with Your Kids), or to hand to their kids (think of the Illuminated Rosary prayer books). Our primary audience is “middle pew Catholics”—parents who attend Mass regularly and want to do more to integrate the faith into their family life, but don’t know where to begin. They might even say, “I can’t teach my children about the faith because I don’t know how.” These parents are probably both working to support their family, living the crazy-busy lifestyle of the typical working- and middle-class American family.”

Kolbe Academy
“Kolbe Academy was founded in 1980 by three families who experienced first-hand the rapid decline of the public school system and who were looking for a wholesome, academically challenging educational environment. The founders anticipated the need to form young Catholic citizens who could effectively defend their Faith through a thorough understanding of doctrine and regular reception of the Sacraments. They also foresaw the growing need for better, more individualized and intensive instruction in basic education. Kolbe Academy Home School became an outgrowth of the day school in 1993 when parents who lived too far away to commute asked for our help with home schooling their children. Recently Kolbe Academy merged with Trinity Grammar and Prep to become Kolbe Academy/Trinity Prep, which educates students from Pre K through high school. With a focus on providing an education that is Ignatian in MethodClassical in Content and Loyal to the Magisterium in a small-class size environment or at home, Kolbe Academy continues to thrive.”

Celebrating the Saints :: Our 2016 Costumes

St. Olaf, St. Philomena, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Teresa of Calcutta, and St. Andrew the Apostle
All Saints in Heaven, Pray for us!

I took these pictures on our way to our parish’s Trunk-or-Treat and Carnival last Friday night and our children will be wearing them again this evening when we head out to my parents home for the evening.  This is the first year in many years that I won’t be hosting our annual All Hallows’ Eve party… I’m really sad that I had to cancel it, but I’ve between working on my health and working so many extra hours, I just don’t have the energy this year. Our kids all understand and are very excited to go out to Grandpa and Grandma’s.  I just got off the phone with my mom and she is busy in the kitchen making Soup, Chili, Spice Cake, Rice Krispies Treats, and even Caramel Apples!  I’ll be bringing along a few games including Saints Bingo and some new All Saints Guessing Jars.

Other than ordering a new St. Teresa costume for our oldest daughter, following the canonization of Mother Teresa, we hadn’t put any thought or energy into this year’s costumes… Friday afternoon we finally pulled out our two costume boxes and threw together costumes before heading to the church. This is one of those years when I’ve been very grateful to have a nice collection to choose from!

.: St. Teresa of Calcutta :.

Twinkle Toes (age 13) dressed as St. Teresa of Calcutta

Costume:  from Our Coats of Many Colors
(Over the years we have built a well-loved collection of costumes from Our Coats of Many Colors.)
This was a repeat of her 2010 Costume… She was so little back then!

The recently canonized St. Teresa of Calcutta won the prize for the best saint costume!

.: St. Philomena :.
Chiquita (age 11) dressed as St. Philomena

Costume: For her costume she used the same dress as last year, but turned it around so it was solid blue in the front. (You can find the Blue Renaissance Princess Costume in a size medium over at Amazon – it’s an amazing price right now… Only $12 and I paid over $30!) We tucked in the hood from a red cape that I had used for a costume years ago, for her to wear over the dress. She added our Adjustable Garland of Roses and then made an Anchor/Arrow/Lily using this tutorial

.: St. Olaf :.
Snuggles (age 9) as St. Olaf

Costume: I had picked up this Viking Costume on a post-Halloween sale at Gymboree a couple years ago. It was too big on Snuggles, but we made it work. He tucked in the way-to-big pants into a pair of his older sister’s old boots and added his younger brother’s Shield and Sword. An ax would have more accurately represented the images of St. Olaf, but we were sticking what we had on hand.

.: St. Elizabeth of Hungary :.
Rose (age 6) as St. Elizabeth of Hungary
Costume: Dress from 2009 St. Margaret of Scotland costume, Veil from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Brigid costume, Crown from a craft on her 4th Birthday party, a basket filled with some rolls from the store and Crocheted Wool Rosary Roses from The Fig and Thimble pinned around the edges.
.: St. Andrew the Apostle :.
Bud (age 4) as St. Andrew

Costume:  Tunic from one of my sibling’s childhood saint costumes, shoulder drape repurposed from St. Luke/St. Paul. Ranger and Twinkle Toes made him a X shaped Cross out of cardboard and Chiquita drew a couple fish and attached them to some yarn to finish his costume. He loved it!

Considering how little time we spent on the costumes, I thought they all came together beautifully!
Our high schoolers didn’t dress up, but they are wearing the “saintly” t-shirts that they received in their Easter Baskets earlier this year! Ranger (14) is wearing his St. Peter (and all the popes) t-Shirt and Captain (16) is wearing his St. Benedict t-shirt.

Happy All Hallows’ Eve and Feast of All Saints!

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
