Our Curriculum Plans :: 2012-2013

Our new school year is just around the corner!   This coming year our oldest boys will be going into 6th and 5th grade, the older girls will be in 3rd and 2nd, and Snuggles will begin Kindergarten.

I have been busy working on creating our curriculum plans for this coming year, and making some changes, as usual… I was very happy with last year’s choices for Math, Spelling, Science, History, Geography, Religion, and Music, but we definitely needed to make some changes for Writing and Grammar.   Even though we really enjoyed the first couple levels of Writing With Ease and First Language Lessons, the later levels just weren’t a good fit for us anymore.  Since we have all been so happy with The Phonetic Zoo, we decided to take the plunge and try a few more of the products from Institute for Excellence in Writing.   (They offer a 100% guarantee, so what did we have to lose?)  I bought Teaching Writing with Structure and Style for me, the Student Writing Intensive, Level A and Fix It! Grammar for our oldest three, Primary Arts of Language: Writing for Chiquita, and Linguistic Development Though Poetry Memorization for everyone.   We worked through a couple lessons during the summer and so far I have been very happy with everything!

Our History Study from this last year was a favorite!   I had planned 6 units for the year, and we were only able to complete the first four:  New World Explorers, Colonial Life, The American Revolution, and The Early 19th Century.  This year we will complete the remaining two units on The Civil War and The Industrial Revolution through the Great Depression, as well as a unit on U.S. Presidents and the Election Study and a unit on World War II.   The plan is to spend one semester on each unit, allowing plenty of time for our reading selections and activities.

With our new little guy this last year, we also weren’t able to finish our Holling C. Holling Map Study… So this year we plan on finally completing the 3rd and 4th Maps, based on the books Minn of the Mississippi and Seabird.  I’m also hoping that we can wrap up our State-by-State Study this year…  It should be fun!

One other addition to our lesson plans will be the formal study of Latin.  I had purchased, and planned to use, Prima Latina a few years ago, but at that time (since we were focusing on correcting auditory processing challenges, and improving reading skills) it just wasn’t a priority and didn’t happen.   This year the four oldest will be completing the course together.   Looking though the Student Workbook, it is going to be really easy for my oldest two, but a gentle introduction will be perfect for them.  They can move on to either Latina Christiana or First Form Latin next year.

I’m still working on Kindergarten plans for Snuggles…  Last year we began the All About Reading’s Program (Pre-1), but after progressing through the first lessons I realized that Snuggles just wasn’t quite ready for formal reading instruction.  We went back to just reading lots of pictures books and will pick up where we left off this year.   He is very excited to get back to “his” school work!

My Daybook :: August 10, 2012

Outside my window…
it has cooled off a little bit.  A friend of ours was married this past Saturday, on the hottest day we have had all year! Of course, the reception was outside… Despite the heat, the wedding was beautiful and we all had so much fun at the reception!

I am thinking…
about how nice it is going to be to really slow down the next two weeks.  I’ve already cancelled the last golf camp the kids were going to attend, and so far we don’t have anything scheduled other than attending Mass.   I want the kids to have plenty of time to just play outside during these last couple weeks before school starts, and I’m hoping to have the time to finally finish our plans for this coming year.

I am thankful…
that God always provides!   I wasn’t sure how we were going to pay for all the medical bills I wracked up last month (on top of our school book orders), but we now have just enough thanks to some overtime Hubby is working, and all of your book purchases.  Thank you!

Learning all the time…
the kids are still working on Math everyday.  The boys are getting close to finishing, and the girls are getting a jump start for this coming year.  Other than that we are still reading some books for our Olympics Unit Study, but watching clips on youtube is just not the same as watching it live…  I sure wish there was a better option for those of us without cable and/or tv reception… oh well.

Celebrating the liturgical year…
the feast of St. Clare is coming up this weekend!  Since St. Clare is the patron saint of embroiderers, I printed off Charlotte’s Saints ‘N Stitches pattern for St. Clare.  I embroidered a couple saints back when the girls were making there way Along the Alphabet Path, but now I think they are old enough to embroider one on their own.  We’ll start this weekend and it will be a perfect project for them to continue this coming week here at home.

From the kitchen…
Our pastor came over for dinner Wednesday night, for the first time!   (We had invited our newly ordained parochial vicar as well, but it somehow didn’t get on his calendar and he wasn’t able to make it after all.)    We ended up serving Teriyaki Pork Tenderloin, along with Roasted Brocolette & Garlic, Sautéed Summer Squash, Garden Salad with those fresh picked tomatoes, and Dinner Rolls.

I am creating created…
another Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake to serve with Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert! YUM!!  The ganache hardened way too quickly, and didn’t drip down the sides very well, but it tasted amazing!

Sour Cream-Chocolate Cake, made from scratch, topped with Cream Cheese Peanut Butter frosting and Chocolate Peanut Butter Ganache… Yumm!  Totally worth cheating on a diet to eat a piece!!!  Now someone needs to get the leftover cake out of my house!

I am working on…
staying out of my laundry room – away from our extra fridge and all that leftover cake…  Good thing I’m caught up on laundry at the moment!

I am going…
to stop by the library so Rascal can pick up his $15 gift card to Barnes and Noble, which he just won for participating in the Summer Reading Program!  I guess our family had pretty good odds of winning at least one prize from the drawing, living in such a small town and all!  😉

I am hoping…
to make it to the Grower’s Market again tomorrow morning.   I’d have to take all the kids, since Hubby will be working all day, but it has been so nice to have all the extra produce in the house each week.

I am reading…
We are all really enjoying G is for Gold Medal.   One of our favorite little tidbits of information that we have learned from this book was about all the “Extinct Events.”  My kids have been having their own backyard Olympics, and including some of these extinct events!

“E is for extinct events, Dozens are no more,
like motorboating, rope climbing, croquet, and tug-of-war.”

Croquet and Tug-of-war are fine, but I drew the line at the discontinued weight lifting event from the 1904 Olympic Games, which was called “the all-around dumbbell contest.”  We don’t allow any name-calling in our home!  😉

I am praying…
for my husband, and a job interview he has coming up on August 14th.   Not only would the job be a promotion, it would also possibly allow us to transfer to an area with a traditional parish that offers the Extraordinary Form of the Mass – something he has been praying for since he married me and got stuck here for years!

Pondering these words…
from Mother Teresa:

“Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments and greater riches and so on, so that children have very little time for their parents. Parents have very little time for each other, and in the home begins the disruption of peace of the world.”

I am listening…
to Roses for Mamma.  My boys heard it playing awhile ago on one of our Pandora radio stations, and Captain said it is his “new favorite song, even though it is so sad.”  When it played again this past week Captain came running to pull me into the living room and listen to the whole song.   It really is such a sad song, but so sweet too.

Around the house…
clean floors!  I just finished sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming the whole house.  With our little guy crawling all over the place, I’ve been cleaning the floors much more frequently!

One of my favorite things…
garden salads during the summer!  My favorite salad is inspired by the “side salad” at an awesome little restaurant nearby, made with a mixture of romaine lettuce, spring mix, red cabbage, grated carrots, cucumber, Colby-Jack cheese, tomatoes, and a mixture of raw cashews, honey-roasted sunflower & pumpkin seeds. Yum!  I prefer Honey Mustard dressing, but lately have been opting for just olive oil and balsamic vinegar or Bragg’s Healthy Vinaigrette.

This week’s plans…

  • Swimming Lessons Monday-Thursday
  • Mail out all book orders
  • Pastor for Dinner Wednesday Night
  • Visit from my Cousin and her family on Thursday afternoon
  • Visit with Friends and Lunch at the pool on Friday
  • Saturday Morning Grower’s Market
  • St. Anthonty Festa/Mass on Sunday

A little peek at my day…

The kids all had so much fun teaching Father how to play Settlers of Catan after dinner.

{pretty, happy, funny, real}

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life. ~

I was working on a daybook post yesterday, but never had a chance to finish it… maybe later, after we get home from swimming lessons.   In the meantime, here are a few pictures I took this past week with my phone using Instagram!

{pretty}

 This pretty bouquet of flowers has been making me smile every time I walk into my kitchen.   They are from my neighbor, who sells flowers at the Grower’s Market each weekend.
Don’t you just love gladiolus?
{happy}

The dipped (shell) cones from DQ after swimming lessons on Captain’s baptismal anniversary were a huge hit and oh-so-easy!

{funny}

We attended a friend’s wedding last Saturday, and the bride choose pink, black and white for her colors.  So pretty!!!  😉  Anyways, we all thought it was funny when the Bride & Groom pulled up to the reception in a Pink Hot Rod!  My girls loved it, and were so excited when they got to climb up inside.   It was such a beautiful wedding and fun reception!
{real}

It is so nice to have freshly picked tomatoes from our own garden this summer!

Another Used Book Sale {Listing Books for my Mom}

I mentioned the Online Curriculum Sale Blog Hop that I am hosting right now to my mom the other day, and offered to list some of her books too.  This will be my mom’s last year of home educating her children, after about 24 years or so (since I was in 5th grade), since my youngest two brothers will both be graduating next spring!

Anyways, we took pictures of some of the books that she no longer needs – and which I won’t need (at least for awhile) or already own duplicates! 😉   They have all been used, but she looked through them and they are all in good condition, with wear to the covers (some more than others, as you can see in the pictures), but still useable.

If you are interested in purchasing any of the books listed, please leave a comment listing the books you would like, along with your email address, and I will send you your total, with shipping, along with payment info. (If you’d rather not leave your email address, you can also email me directly at jessica(dot)showerofroses(at)gmail(dot)com)

These books will be shipped directly from my mom, and can’t be combined with any of the books that I have left. (By the way, I just reduced the prices on some of my remaining books!)   Shipping will be $3.50 for 1-2 items and $5.00 for 3 or more, to cover the cost of packaging and media rate in the continental U.S.  If you would like the books mailed elsewhere, I will get back to you with the actual shipping costs.   My mom will be able to mail all orders next week.

            A Catholic Magazine for Children

            Do your children have a favorite magazine?  I’ve been meaning to share about the magazine subscription that we have for our children for awhile now, and was reminded yesterday when our Summer Issue of St. Mary’s Messenger arrived in the mail!
            St. Mary’s Messenger is a full-sized, full-color, quarterly Catholic magazine for children, ages 7 to 12, which provides children with a fun and entertaining way to learn more about their Catholic faith, Jesus, Mary and the saints!  It is an excellent magazine, and our children get excited every time it arrives in our mailbox!

            Yesterday afternoon, as Captain was reading was reading the article Bear of St. Clare’s, he stopped and  said, “MOM!  I know these nuns!  There is Sister Agnes Clare, the one that always helps at Family Camp!”  It ended up being the first thing the kids showed their daddy when he arrived home from work last night!
            Some of the other articles in this latest edition include:  Fun for Life (an article on raising funds for ultrasounds), a poem about The Boston Tea Party, Two Tones New Home (another story about a dog), The Pilgrimage to Santiago, Young Washington Boy Miraculously Healed by Bl. Kateri, Recipes and Games, Summer Saints, Seeds and Weeds, information on Spiritual Bouquets, and even includes a packet of wildflower seeds to plant.  It really is a wonderful magazine!
            You can find out more about St. Mary’s Messenger or order a subscription here.

            My Daybook :: July 30, 2013

            Outside my window…
            it is beautiful!  I’m determined to relax and enjoy the rest of summer, and this glorious warm weather!

            I am thinking…
            about prioritizing.   My body just hasn’t been able to keep up with my mind lately!  😉  It didn’t help that I couldn’t move on Thursday, then spent Saturday night and all day Sunday in bed with the worst headache of my life.  (I finally caught that cold/cough that my kids were passing around…)    One of the first things that has to go, when I get behind, is answering emails and comments.   So, if you haven’t heard back from me, now you know why… Hopefully I will catch up soon.

            I am thankful…
            for vitamins and supplements that I can take (unlike pain meds) and that I am feeling (mostly) well today!  Thank you God!!  I’ve tried my best to not complain (too much) and offer it all up, but it seems like it has just been one thing after the next lately!   I’m so thankful for my husband, who has been awesome, making sure that I am getting enough time to rest and get better.

            Learning all the time…
            Math lessons every. single. day. this week!  My kids need to get busy if they are going to finish last year’s textbooks before the new year begins.   A couple of them still have 20-30 lessons to complete.   Are we the only ones out there still working on finishing last year’s school work?   So many families seem to be starting their new school year already!   We won’t be starting again until September.

            Celebrating the liturgical year…
            tomorrow is the feast of St. Ignatius.   It is also Captain’s baptismal day!   I think we will celebrate with St. Ignacio’s Nachos for Dinner and maybe some Ice Cream Cones with “Shell” topping for dessert!  😉

            From the kitchen…
            organic fruits and vegetables from our local Growers Market!   I have been meaning to go all summer and finally made it to the market on Saturday morning.   I’m hoping to make it a weekly trip for the rest of the summer/fall.

            I am creating…
            lesson plans and check lists for next year.  Last year I made weekly check lists for my kids, at least for the first half of the year, before the baby arrived!  This year I’m leaning towards Sarah’s Color Coded Progress Lists. Love them!!

            I am working on…
            simplifying and organizing our home.  It’s a never ending job, especially with a family this size, but always rewarding!

            I am going…
            to try and post our family’s curriculum picks for this coming year by the end of the week.

            I am hoping…
            {still} that Bud’s 2nd tooth breaks through soon.   It is so close! The poor little guy has been miserable lately!  {It’s been a very long week!}

            I am reading…
            The Maid of Fairbourne Hall.  This is the first book by Julie Klassen that I have read.  I picked it up from the library and I am really enjoying the story.  It very much reminds me of Downton Abbey!

            I am praying…
            St. Ignatius’ Prayer for Generosity.   “Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek rest, to labor and not to ask for reward, save that of knowing that I do your will.”

            Pondering these words…
            I included a few quotes from My Nameday – Come for Dessert in my last post on Celebrating St. Anne’s Day.  An anonymous commenter asked the following:

            This from your post jumped out at me: “How do you find the time?” mothers ask. “Something less important must go undone,” is the answer.   How do you decide what to leave undone? There is much to celebrate every week, especially with a large family and the beauty of the Catholic Church. I would be interested in any tips you have in how you accomplish such beautiful celebrations.

            That question has been on my mind since reading it, trying to think how best to respond…  After so many years of celebrating the liturgical year, it has become very easy for me to do so.  Let me put some more thought into it, and perhaps I can come up with some helpful tips for you.  In the meantime (because knowing me it might be quite some time before I get around to it…) here is a quote from one of my favorite books on the topic:  The Year & Our Children by Mary Reed Newland.   I highly recommend this book!

            “There is also the question of time.  Where do you find the time? Like these other questions, the answer is, we can find it if we plan for it.  We can find it quite easily by looking to see where we waste it.  Not wasting it is not easy, because the habits of time-wasting, although they are harmless, are hard to break – as I know from expierence.  Mothers have this struggle all to themselves.  It involves such things as the radio habit, coffee breaks, cigarette breaks, long telephone conversations, chatting with neighbors, a heavy involvement in outside activities.  Somewhere most American women can “find time” to devote to the enriching of their families’ spiritual life.  The joyous discovery is that once we have struggled and found the time, tasted and seen how sweet are these pursuits together, we begin to gauge all our doings so that there will be time – because we are convinced there must be.”

            I am listening…
            to all the cute things that my kids have been saying.  Like Snuggles at swimming lessons this afternoon, when he said: “I’m done playing this swimming lesson game!” lol

            Around the house…
            gifts from a blog friend from France!   My husband thought it was very interesting that he and the kids opened the package while I was at the hospital for my ultrasound, just before they prayed the final day of prayers of a novena to St. Jean Vianney.   I didn’t know that he and the kids were praying a novena for me, and he didn’t know that this package was on it’s way to our family!

            One of my favorite things…
            Roasted Vegetables.   One of our new favorites is Roasted Broccolette with Garlic and Olive Oil. Yum!!!

            A few plans for this week…

            • Swimming Lessons Monday-Thursday
            • Host a Curriculum Sale Blog Hop here at Shower of Roses
            • Final Little Flowers Meeting for Wreath IV
            • Friday Morning Mass
            • Wedding Rehearsal on Friday
            • Wedding on Saturday
            • Mass on Sunday

            A little peek at my day…

            Celebrating St. Anne’s Day

            A nameday commemorates the feast of the saint whose name we received at baptism. To the Church’s mind, the day of the saint’s death is his real feastday, and that is the day usually assigned as his feast–his birthday into heaven. In some countries and in most religious orders it is customary to observe name-days instead of birthdays. ~ My Nameday: Come for Dessert

            I’m curious… Do you celebrate namedays in your home?   If so, and your parents didn’t give you the name of a specific or well-known saint, how did you figure out when to celebrate your nameday?

            Our children are all named after specific beloved saints, and we have always celebrated their namedays.  A good number of our feast day celebrations, at least most of the ones that we make sure to celebrate every year, are actually namedays in our home.  But when it comes to my own nameday, I’ve never been completely sure when to celebrate…  For the past 5 or 6 years (basically once our children got old enough to ask when we would celebrate mom and dad’s namedays, too) we’ve been celebrating my nameday on the feast of St. Anne.   My name is actually just Jessica Jo, but I choose to be confirmed with the names Ann Elizabeth, so choosing St. Anne’s Day for my own nameday works, right?

            (My Grandmother’s name was JoAnn, so I choose St. Anne in honor of both our Heavenly Grandmother and my own Grandmother, and St. Elizabeth of Hungary because, in my opinion, she was one of the prettiest saints in our Picture Book of Saints! 😉  I was confirmed when I was about 12, and didn’t develop a devotion to St. Therese until years later.)

            Anyways… I had plans to make a special dinner and dessert in honor of St. Anne, but I somehow managed to throw my back out and have hardly been able to move all day!  (Which explains all the extra time for blogging today!)  Despite not being able to move, my kids were amazing today!  They helped me get back up off the floor after trying to change a diaper, put away all the laundry, help make all the meals, took turns holding the baby, and even finished preparing a special treat for their momma’s nameday!   (I guess all those State-by-State baking “classes” are starting to pay off!)

            “How do you find the time?” mothers ask. “Something less important must go undone,” is the answer. Namedays need not be all work and no fun. The solution lies in systematic planning. Like all other household activities, advanced planning relieves the pressure. It is easy to work out a nameday routine that will become a family tradition. Change the routine here, change it there, but keep the same outline from year to year. Done in this way, the celebrations are easier to manage, and children will love the program the more for its familiarity. They will feel a part of it. As they grow older, they will take the whole thing out of mother’s hands.  ~ My Nameday: Come for Dessert

            Some of the treats we have made in the past include Crème Sainte-AnneWatermelon Pie, and Watermelon Cupcakes.  This year, continuing the red and green theme inspired by Charlotte and originally suggested in our cookbook, I picked up some red and green fruits to decorate a “Dessert Pizza” and use up the (not at all healthy) roll of sugar cookie dough leftover from our latest birthday party.
            Through the ages she {St. Anne} has been depicted wearing a green mantle and a red dress, colors symbolic of immortality and divine love.  Rev. Edgar Schmiedler in “Your Home: A Church in Miniature” mentions the custom in Louisiana of children of French extraction named Anne wearing red and green ribbons in her honor. These are colors to bear in mind for party decorations on her feast. There is no need to look “Christmasy” by using equal amounts; rather, use cool green for the main color scheme with accents of red. ~ My Nameday: Come for Dessert

            I did show Twinkle Toes a picture, and she ended up decorating our Dessert Pizza with “Red & Green Fruit Ribbons” just like Lisa did last year. (Thanks for the additional inspiration Lisa!)   It turned out beautiful and delicious.   I posted the recipe over at Catholic Cuisine!

            Family Prayer on the Feast of St. Anne:
            Father: We all rejoice in the Lord,
            As we keep holiday in honor of blessed Anne,
            Of her whose feast fills angels with joy,
            And sets them praising the Son of God.
            All: Amen.
            Father: Spotless Anna, Juda’s glory,
            Through the Church from East to West
            Every tongue proclaims thy praises,
            Holy Mary’s mother blessed.
            All: From thy stem in beauty budded
            Ancient Jesse’s mystic rod;
            Birth from thee received the Mother
            Of the almighty Son of God
            Father: Let us pray. O God, You were pleased to bestow Your grace upon Anne so that she might fitly become the mother of her who was to bear Your only-begotten Son; grant that we who keep her feast will be helped by her protection. Through Christ, our Lord.
            All: Amen. Christ conquers, Christ reigns!

            P.S.  The only reason my kitchen has been looking so spotless in these last two posts is because yesterday afternoon was the “every other Wednesday” when I have a cleaning lady for three hours! I told Hubby we could stop using her for awhile so we could catch up on all these new medical bills, but he said no, not yet… I feel so spoiled!  She is such a blessing!! So, yes, I have been resting!  🙂

            Happy St. Anne’s Day!

            A Little About Me

            Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.

            Prayer of Mothers

            Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
