{pretty, happy, funny, real}

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life. ~

{pretty}

This was one of my favorite pictures of my pretty girl, taken during her Early American Pioneer Party, on her birthday.

{happy}

Our boys were very happy and excited to dress up for their sister’s birthday party.   Especially when they got to wear their Daddy’s old cowboy hats from his Rodeo Days.

{funny}

I know I already posted this picture a couple days ago, but take a closer look at it…
Notice anything that doesn’t belong?

Now?  If not, don’t feel bad, I sure didn’t…
I was focused on the birthday girl, not that mischievous little 2 year old of ours.

It took me a few hours, and quite a few pictures, to finally find that missing nursing pad I had lost that afternoon when feeding the baby!  She refused to give it back, shoving it further down her shirt.

That little one of ours always loves “her” accessories!

{real}

Too much fun for this little cowboy, who rarely naps anymore.
He sure looked cute passed out on the couch!

Happy Birthday To You! {A Dr. Seuss Thing 2 Birthday Party}

My sweet little niece turned 2 on Good Friday, and we had so much fun at her Dr. Seuss Thing 2 themed birthday party on Holy Saturday.   It was perfect timing for us, since the kids were all over being sick and Hubby (who is also godfather to the birthday girl) arrived home just before midnight on Good Friday.

This precious little girl has been blessed with some truly amazing parents.  It’s been a hard couple years for them, as they continually deal with surgeries and health challenges for this little cutie.  There is still so much unknown – since there isn’t a documented case of the challenges my niece faces – and my niece is still a tiny little Thing 2, but she has made so much progress this past year.    I am so very proud of both my brother and his wife!

My sister-in-law managed to escape my camera, but I did get a picture of my brother Thing Dad.   Apparently he decorated his own shirt for the party.   I was impressed!  Good job Brian!!

My sister-in-law had the cutest decorations for the party. Everything was so pretty… and delish!

One Fish, Two Fish… How about some GOLD FISH?

On the Menu:

Sneetches Peaches (Peach Tea)

Mulberry Street Frankfruiters (Fruit)
Zi-za-ma-wizzers wizzles (Salad)
Truffela Pie (Pizza)

 I especially loved the pasta and fruit salad in the covered glass jars, to keep the bugs out.  I already purchased a couple to use in the future!

And check this out!    I’ve seen where some fences are painted with chalkboard paint, but I really loved that these could be taken down, and they looked so cute hanging from rope.   It makes me want to build a fence, just so I can create a fun collage of chalkboards like this in our yard…
… and our kids thought that the Giant Chalk Pencil with Eraser was just about the coolest thing ever.

The Red Velvet Cake was amazingly delicious.  Yes, I had a small piece – along with some more dairy on Easter – and paid for it with a cranky baby for a few days.   (He does seem to be getting a little better though!)  Actually it was the first time I’d ever had Red Velvet Cake!  I’m sure that since our Costco makes this cake, it won’t be the last…

As for the Thing Hair… Rose wasn’t sure what to think. She just had this dazed and confused look… “Blink, Rose, blink!”

And our silly little Snuggles figured if he couldn’t see anyone, they couldn’t see him either!

Oh, and the the birthday girl is a pro at pinatas!  She picked the correct ribbon on the very first try!

We all had such a wonderful time.  My kids are so happy that they have one cousin that lives close enough to visit.   It’s been years since they have seen (or even met!) their nine other cousins.

Today you are You, that is truer than true.
There is no one alive who is Youer than You.
― Dr. Seuss, Happy Birthday to You!

An Early American Pioneer Birthday

This past Friday our little Chiquita turned 7 years old!   The day didn’t start out as I had hoped, and we ended up spending the first half of the day at doctor’s offices, then ran a few errands while we were in town, but we arrived home after lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the beautiful sunny day!

Chiquita had asked for a Kirsten themed Pioneer Birthday, inspired by their Early American History Lap Books and Unit Studies this year!   I didn’t get to all the ideas/plans I had come up with for our little family party (I’ll save the others for another time, especially since Twinkle Toes is hoping for a “Little House on the Prairie Party), but despite my lack of organization everything fell into place.

I just love how my children do their best to dress up for some of our various themed parties! The girls found their longest prairie skirts, bonnets, and had me braid their hair (just like Kirsten’s for the birthday girl), and the boys put on long sleeved shirts, with vests, and their Daddy’s old Rodeo hats!

.: A Friendship Quilt :.

“When they laid them together on the grass, the squares made a lively pattern of blues, reds, greens, browns and white.”  Happy Birthday, Kirsten!

Decorating Friendship Quilt Cookies

I wanted to try and find a way to tie in the quilt that Kirsten and her friends made in the book Happy Birthday, Kirsten!  As much as I would love to be able to sew a real quilt, I am not at all talented when it comes to sewing.   Someday I would love to take some more classes…  maybe when my girls are a little older we can do so together.

Instead, I made some square sugar cookies and frosted them white.   I had each of the children decorate their own square with decorator icing and candies. We placed them together on a tray to form a friendship quilt!

The kids enjoyed this so much, they just kept asking to decorate “just one more!”   I removed the quick “sample” Happy Birthday Square I decorated to make room for Captain’s 2nd cookie…

Top row:  Tree by Snuggles, Chalkboard by Captain, Embroidered Heart by Twinkle Toes
Middle row: Mountains by Captain, Little House by Twinkle Toes, Snowy Path by Rascal
Bottom row:  Flowers and Butterflies by Chiquita, Daisy by Chiquita, Tree by Rascal

… but the “Quilt Squares” just kept coming so I started making a second quilt.   It looks like I forgot to take a picture of that second quilt completed, but I did get one of the finished cookies on the cookie rack:

From left to right – top row:  Chiquita, Twinkle Toes, Chiquita, Twinkle Toes
Bottom row: Twinkle Toes, Rascal, Rascal, Captain
.: Frontier Fun :.

“Kirsten thought about picking wildflowers and playing games.”  Happy Birthday, Kirsten!

Kirsten played games that featured things she saw around her farm every day-baskets, barn cats, and honey pots.  The American Girl’s Party Book

We choose a few fun, old-fashioned, game ideas from The American Girl’s Party Book.   Puss in the Corner was definitely the favorite.

Puss in the Corner
(This has become a new favorite game around here.  They were having SO much fun!)

To play, you’ll need 5 players.  Four people, with one person at each corner.  The fifth person stands in the middle.   She is Puss- she wants a corner too! The object of the game is to change places without letting Puss get a corner.  When Puss yells “Change!” all the players scramble to change corners.  As they change, Puss tries to run to an empty corner.  Whoever is left without a corner becomes Puss.

I Have a Basket
All the players stand in a circle.  The first player begins the game by saying, “I have a basket.” The player besides her asks, “What’s inside?” The first player names something that starts with the letter A.  the second player then names something that starts with B, and so on.  If a player can’t think of an object, she sits down.  The last player standing is the winner.
Here I Bake, Here I Brew
All the players but one join hands to form a circle. That player is held prisoner in the middle.  She touches a pair of joined hands in the circle and says, “Here I bake.” Then she touches another pair of hands and says, “Here I brew.” Suddenly she tries to force her way out of the circle at another spot as she says, “Here I mean to break through!” If she succeeds, she picks a new player to be the prisoner.
An Egg Basket Pinata

I purchased this Pinata for a couple dollars after Easter a few years ago…   We filled it with some old-fashioned candies and peppermints.

.: Daisy Chains :.

“Pick as many daisies as you can!” Anna told everyone.  “We’re going to make daisy chains.”  ~ Happy Birthday, Kirsten!

This past week Michaels had all of their American Girl Crafts 50% off!  So, on our way home from taking the baby to see the doctor we picked up this fun little craft kit.   The girls needed a little bit of help, but were mostly able to make their bracelets on their own.

.: Kirsten’s Birthday Cake :.

“Mama was already coming from the kitchen, carrying a heart-shaped cake.” ~ Happy Birthday, Kirsten!

After a yummy dinner of Roasted Chicken, Baked Beans, Potato Salad, Garden Salad, and Lemonade, it was time for cake!

I am pretty sure that this was the easiest birthday cake I have ever made, and it still tied in perfectly with our theme!   It was inspired by Kirsten’s party treats and the picture of her birthday cake, in Happy Birthday, Kirsten!

Chiquita choose a Gluten-Free Applesauce Cake Recipe, and I baked it in a 12″ Heart Shaped Cake Pan.   After it had cooled we just surrounded it with Strawberries and served it with some Fresh Cream!   For Ice Cream she choose Old Fashioned Vanilla and Rocky (Prairie) Road.

.: Birthday Gifts :.

“Where there’s a will, there’s always a way.” ~ Happy Birthday, Kirsten!

Despite Kirsten being discontinued a couple years ago, I was so excited to win an auction (at a fair price) for a new doll on ebay.    Her other gifts included the darling Kirsten Prairie Dress, a gray cat (purchased at Costco), and Sari (Kirsten’s doll, also from ebay).

The birthday girl also used the gift from her grandparents/godparents to purchase her first and very own scooter, and received a doll sized Bonnet from her big sister!

“Happy Birthday, dear.”

St. George and the Dragon :: A Sugar Cookie Story Quilt

After a birthday party on Friday and another Good Shepherd’s Garden Party yesterday, I didn’t have any plans whatsoever for today’s feast of St. George.  In fact, I was even stalling on reminding my children, since I didn’t want them to try and convince me to bake a cake!   However, I made the mistake of leaving my internet browser open, after visiting Waltzing Matilda’s, and guess who happened to see it…
Well, my kids were all very excited and ran to pull our copy of St. George and the Dragon off the bookshelf.    My oldest said, “Don’t worry, Mom, we don’t need to make a cake this year.”  The others all agreed…  And that’s what convinced me to try and find something special for today!
There are all sorts of ways that mothers do special things for their children… One of my favorites is with foods and crafts, finding fun ways to celebrate the feasts and seasons of the liturgical year at home.  Even though I know they don’t need these extra activities, it makes me happy to create these wonderful memories with my children, while teaching them about our faith.
Since it was already so late in the day, I wasn’t even going to attempt baking a cake, but I did have some leftover sugar cookie dough in the fridge from one of our birthday party activities (more on that soon) and so we decided to make a “Sugar Cookie Story Quilt” inspired by our much loved picture book.

“A story quilt is an ideal whole-class extension project that works at all grade levels. Quilt squares feature chapters, characters, or significant scenes from the literature circle book. They can include a border with a repeated design or symbol that represents a key idea. Quilt squares can incorporate visual as well as written components (e.g., an important quote or brief summary). Effective adaptations are possible for all grade levels.” ~ Source

The Path traveled by the Young Knight and Princess by Rascal
“In the Days when monsters and giants and fairy folk lived in England, a noble knight was riding across a plain…   The Red Cross Knight had never yet faced a foe, and did not even know his name or where he had been born.   But now he was bound on a great adventure, sent by the Queen of the Fairies to try his young strength against a deadly enemy, a dragon grim and horrible.”
The Dragon by Rascal
“He was laying waste to her land so that many frightened people had left their homes and run away. Others had shut themselves inside the walls of a castle with Una’s father and mother, the king and queen of the country. ”
The Castle by Captain
“Now we have come to my own country,” said Una. “Be on your guard.  See, there is the city and the great brass tower that my parents built strong enough to stand against the brassy-scaled dragon.”
St. George’s Shield by Captain
“He wore heavy armor and carried an ancient silver shield marked with a red cross.  It was dented with the blows of many battles fought long ago by other brave knights.”
St. George Pray for Us by Mom
“He called your George, which means ‘Plow of the Earth’ and ‘Fight the Good Fight.’ For you were born to be England’s friend and patron saint, Saint George of Merry England.”
St. George’s Sword by Chiquita
“And the knight’s bright weapon, taking advantage of that open jaw, ran it through with such strength that the dragon fell dead, breathing his last in smoke and cloud.”
The Battle by Chiquita
“Then they heard a hideous roaring that filled the air with terror and seemed to shake the ground.  The dreadful dragon lay stretched on the sunny side of a great hill, like a great hill himself, and when he saw the knight’s armor glistening in the sunlight, he came eagerly to do battle.”
Defeating the Dragon by Twinkle Toes
“Like a mountain he fell, and lay still.  The knight himself trembled to see that fall, and his dear lady did not dare to come near to thank her faithful knight until she saw that the dragon would stir no more.”
The Victory Celebration by Twinkle Toes
“Trumpets sounded the news that the great beast had fallen…  And Una and the Red Cross Knight were married and lived together joyfully.”

Happy Feast of St. George!

The Good Shepherd’s Garden Party :: Week Two

Welcome to the Lord’s Table

How good a thing it is, how pleasant to behold,
when all God’s people live in peace, like sheep within one fold.
As perfume, by its scent, spreads fragrance all around,
so life itself will sweeter be where unity is found.

This afternoon we had our 2nd Good Shepherd’s Garden Party for this Easter season!   I didn’t put much any planning into this week’s party since my mind had been focused on an extra cranky baby and a certain seven year old’s birthday, and by yesterday I was pretty much wiped out from another crazy week.   Thankfully I knew that this would be a pretty easy week to pull together, with a few modifications to the menu.    When we got home from Mass I took a look in the fridge and decided that this week would be the perfect opportunity to finally dye some Easter Eggs and try and make Italian Easter Bread!

Here are a few pictures from this week’s party:

~ The Table and Chairs ~

After nothing but rain for weeks, the past few days have been GORGEOUS!! I just couldn’t bring myself to set the dining room table for our party. Instead I had the boys pull down the cushions and set up our “table and chairs” on the front porch. We were going to finally eat outside!

~ More Chairs ~

In the meantime, I had Snuggles and the girls pull a couple barstools chairs over to the island to dye some Easter Eggs.  I had remembered pinning an idea for using Muffin Tins to dye Easter Eggs, so we gave it a try…  What a pain!!!  We had to keep turning the eggs, to get them in the dye, and there really isn’t enough room for much dye {PLUS AN EGG} in each tin.   Next time I will buy a Jumbo Muffin Tin just use cups!

~ The Bread ~

As I mentioned above, this year we made Italian Easter Bread!  It ended up being much easier to make than I expected and turned out beautifully! It bakes up incredibly soft and sweet, and reminded my children of the Portuguese sweet rolls they enjoy at our local St. Anthony’s Festa each year. We will be making these again, for sure!

Didn’t they turn out pretty?!?!

~ The Honey ~
Delicious Monastery Creamed Honey, for with our Italian Easter Bread.
~ The Wine ~

This year, rather than making our own, we enjoyed the two bottles of Sparkling Raspberry Grape Spritzer that had been forgotten chilling in the laundry room fridge.
~ The Fruit ~

Leftover strawberries…
~ The Milk ~

… and Whipped Cream, from Chiquita’s birthday party on Friday!

(I haven’t forgotten about posting pictures from her party… there is just too many to sort through, and I just haven’t made the time to do so.  Soon!  We had such a great time!)

Sometimes the simplest parties, without too much planning, turn out the best…  Don’t you think?

 Be sure to visit Catholic Cuisine to share pictures from your own Garden Party!
(I’ll have the link-up posted by tomorrow morning.)

Somebody’s Seven

Any guesses on the party theme she choose?

Happy Birthday Chiquita!

* Our birthday celebration started a little late this afternoon, since we ended up spending yet another morning at doctor’s offices – both our pediatrician’s, followed by a trip to see an ophthalmologist… Our little Bud managed to poke himself in the eye, with his sharp little fingernail, last night.  Thankfully a week of antibiotic eye drops, three times a day, should be all he will need.  My poor baby!  I’ll be back to post more pictures of our birthday girl, but right now I’m headed back to the party!

{pretty, happy, funny, real} :: 4 months old!

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life. ~

{pretty}

Our pretty handsome little Bud is 4 months old today! I took him to see the Pediatrician on Monday (to have his ears looked at – they were fine) and he is already weighing 13 pounds.

{happy}
Bud’s activity gym and new friend, Mortimer the Moose, make him very happy…

… and so does his big brother!

Seeing precious moments like this one make ME very happy!
{funny}

{real}

Bud is getting real close to rolling over!  With all of his attempts yesterday, I thought for sure he’d make it onto his tummy.  It’s just that one arm that keeps getting in his way.

I’m sure it won’t be long!

Almost Finished

I mentioned yesterday that we are finally finishing our fireplace!  The contractors spent most of the day working on it yesterday and they are almost finished.   We now have to wait for the Hearthstones to arrive, which should be sometime this week, and then they will be back to finish it up.  After that we will just need to have the stove insert placed back inside the fireplace and hooked back up to the pipes going up the chimney.   It is turning out so pretty and I am so excited (!!!!) that it is almost finished after all this time!

Here is how it looks at the moment.   (Please excuse the steam mop… I think I am going to be cleaning up dust for quite some time! And I also have some touch up painting from the mantel being moved higher.) So, what do you think?  Honestly?   I actually like it even more than I thought I would – the stone color was Hubby’s choice, not mine.  It did turn out pretty, and really looks better in person than it does in the pictures.  I’m just not sure how well it matches the wall color.

Originally we planned to paint the three walls that stick out, surrounding the fireplace, a color (perhaps a reddish burgundy, sage, etc) of some sort.   But, at the time, we were so overwhelmed by all the other decisions we were making that we ended up just using some of the leftover Wilmington Tan paint from the new dining/living room areas in the back.   All the other walls in our entry are the same Philadelphia Cream (light yellow) that is in the kitchen, and the ceilings and hallway are all Stowe White.   (We also plan to replace the white ceiling fan with a dark brown fan, closer to the ceiling, finish painting the trim, and are still looking for light fixtures/wall sconces to replace the old track light that was above the fireplace.)

The ceilings in the original part of our home are all wood (and are now the only remaining part of the original house which hasn’t been remodeled/replaced in the 12 years we have lived here!) which makes it a little more challenging to choose a paint color to coordinate.   Now we are thinking that maybe just the Philadelphia Cream from the kitchen, or perhaps even the Stowe White, might be the best option for these three walls.   I’d love to hear any thoughts and suggestions you might have for us!

Finishing the Fireplace

We have been waiting a long time to “someday” finish our fireplace.   We had our cabinet maker create a new mantel which he installed in December of 2010,  after we had to pull down the old brick nearly two years ago.    We had hoped to finish the project with our 2011 tax refund, but other things came up and it was postponed again.   We were blessed to be able to set aside some of this year’s tax refund to finally complete the fireplace!!!

This is what you would see when you walk into our home.  I tried covering up the ugliness last summer with some brown paper, but it had to come down when we started using the stove again for the winter.   I’m not the most patient person and apparently God wanted me to work on this virtue!

I tried to have this project completed while Hubby was out of town, in time for Easter and as a birthday surprise for him, but it ended up being a bigger project than I anticipated and three weeks wasn’t enough time.    I first met and hired a Mason. Then I needed to have the stove removed.  Then I found out that the mantle was originally installed too close to the stove and it needed to be moved 6 inches higher.  Then I called the cabinet maker, who was too busy to come out right away. And then the stone we had chosen needed to be ordered.   Needless to say there wasn’t anyway it could be finished by Easter.  This week it is finally all coming together, and that “someday” is finally here!

It’s been a busy morning.   The contractors arrived at 7:45, the cabinet maker at 8:00, and everything is falling into place.   They think they might have it all finished today, but then we’ll still need to have the stove insert hooked back up.   I am so excited… and the kids are learning all about masonry!    🙂

I’m sure I’ll be back to later share a picture of the progress!

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
