The Little Flower Novena ~ Day 4

Therese at thirteen (February 1886)

~ Day Four ~

Come Holy Spirit and fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of divine love.

V. Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created.

R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray: O God, who have instructed the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit; grant that by the gift of the same Spirit, we may be ever truly wise and rejoice in His consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Acts of Faith, Hope, and Love: O my God! I believe in Thee: strengthen my faith. All my hopes are in Thee: do Thou secure them. I love Thee: teach me to love Thee daily more and more.

The Act of Contrition: O my God! I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend You, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance , and to amend my life. Amen.

Forth Day

Dear Little Flower of Carmel, bearing so patiently the disappointments and delays allowed by God, and preserving in the depths of your soul an unchanging peace because you sought only God’s will, ask for me complete conformity to that adorable Will in all the trials and disappointments of life. If the favors I am asking during this Novena are pleasing to God, obtain them for me. If not, it is true I shall feel the refusal keenly, but I too wish only God’s Will, and pray in the words you used, that I “may ever be perfectly fulfilled in me.” Intercede for us all the days of our life, but especially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  Abandonment to God. I fear only one thing—to keep my own will; take it, my God, for I choose all that You choose. The only happiness here below is to strive to be always content with what Jesus gives us. I can demand nothing with fervor, except the perfect accomplishment of God’s will in my soul. O my Beloved, I offer myself to You, that You may perfectly accomplish in me Your holy designs, and I will not allow anything created to be an obstacle in their path.

Concluding Prayer Prayed Each Day:
O Lord, You have said: Unless you become as little children you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven; grant us, we beg You, so to follow, in humility and simplicity of heart, the footsteps of the Virgin blessed Thérèse, that we may attain to an everlasting reward. Amen.

St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, pray for us.

One more Giveaway!

I have been given the opportunity to host one more giveaway, as we prepare for the upcoming feast of St. Therese!  This giveaway is for a beautiful hand painted St. Therese Doll, very similar to those I have been making for my own children the past couple years, though this little doll has so much more detail than I am capable of painting!

Hand Painted St. Therese Doll

St. Therese is a 3.5 inch wooden peg doll hand painted with non-toxic acrylic paints and sealed to preserve this keepsake toy.

Head on over and check out the Etsy Shop, St. Luke’s Brush, and then come back and leave a comment here at Shower of Roses for your chance to win this little hand painted doll!  Not only do they have quite a few saints available, they also have hand painted Flower Fairies and even a couple little sets!

Comments will be open until Midnight on Friday, October 1st, the new feast of St. Therese. The winner will be chosen with a random number generator and announced on Sunday, October 3rd, her traditional feast day! Be sure to leave your email address, or have it linked in your profile, so that I am able to contact you.

Disclaimer: I just wanted to let you all know that no compensation was received for hosting these giveaways, just the privileged of being able to help spread the word about some great Catholic businesses!

The Little Flower Novena ~ Day 3

Therese at the age of eight
with her sister Celine (1881)

“This was the year Therese entered the Abbey school.  The skipping rope Therese is holding was, along with the swing, her favourite game because she very much liked the movement, “Higher,” she would tell her father or her sister when they pushed the swing, “so I can see Mother Godet’s bonnet.”  She was their neighbor at Les Buissonnets and would work in her garden with a cotton bonnet on her head.  You can still see the two hooks on a beam in the shed where the swing was hung.”
~ Pierre Descouvemont, Therese and Lisieux

~ Day Three ~

Amen.

Third Day

Dear Little Flower, make all things lead me to heaven and God, Whether I look at the sun, the moon, the stars and the vast expanse in which they float, or whether I look at the flowers of the field, the trees of the forest, the beauties of the earth so full of color and so glorious, may they speak to me of the love and power of God; may they all sing His praises in my ear. Like you may I daily love Him more and more in return for His gifts. Teach me often to deny myself in my dealings with others, that I may offer to Jesus many little sacrifices. Intercede for us all the days of our life, but especially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  The Use of God’s Gifts. How much benefit have I received from the beauties of nature, bestowed in such abundance. How they raise me to Him who placed such wonders in this land of exile which is only to last a day. O sparkling nature, if I did not see God in you, you would be naught but a great tomb. With your little hand which caresses Mary, You sustain the universe and bestow life; and You think of me, O Jesus my little King. I do not wish creatures to have one atom of my love. I wish to give all to Jesus, since He has shown me that He alone is perfect happiness.

The Little Flower Novena ~ Day 2

Therese at three-and-a-half
taken in July of 1876

“Generally a happy child, she pouted that day becuase the big, black veil under which the photographer hid made her apprehensive.”
~ Pierre Descouvemont, Therese and Lisieux

~ Day Two ~

Amen.

Second Day

O dear little Saint, now that you see the crucified Jesus in heaven, still bearing the wounds caused by sin, you know still more clearly than you did upon earth the value of souls, and the priceless worth of that Precious Blood which He shed to save them. As I am one of those children for whom Christ died, obtain for me all the graces I need in order to profit by that Precious Blood. Use your great power with our divine Lord and pray for me.

Intercede for us all the days of our life, but especially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  Sin. The only grace I ask, O Jesus, is never to offend Thee. By love and not by fear, does a soul avoid committing the least fault. Yes, even if I have on my conscience every possible crime, I should lose none of my confidence; my heart breaking with sorrow, I should go and throw myself into the arms of my Savior. The remembrance of my faults humbles me and makes me afraid to rely on my own strength, which is nothing but weakness.

The Little Flower Novena ~ Day 1

The feast day of St. Thérèse is coming up! Her feast is celebrated on the 1st of October and on the 3rd of October on the Traditional Calendar. The novena for her intercession can be said anytime, but we will be praying this particular novena in anticipation of her feast, ending on the eve of the Feast (Sept 30th or Oct 2nd).

“Many people report unexpectedly finding or being given a literal rose or roses (or smelling the perfume of roses) after praying to St. Thérèse, who said on her deathbed, ‘After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses. I will spend my Heaven doing good upon earth. I will raise up a mighty host of little saints. My mission is to make God loved…'” Quoted from Fisheaters

There are many different options for praying novenas to St. Therese. . . Last year, on the nine days leading up to her feast, we prayed this Nine Day Novena.

This year we will begin each day with the Twenty-four ‘Glory Be’s’ Novena to St. Therese.  This is a very lovely novena (plus I can use my beautiful little “Shower of Roses” Chaplet!) and quite easy to complete.  It is also said to be the most dear to the Little Flower.  Here is the little story that is attached to this novena:

“Father Putigan, a Jesuit priest, began the Novena to Saint Therese of the Child Jesus on December 3, 1925, asking the glorious Saint for one great favour. For nine days, he recited the “Glory Be” 24 times thanking the Holy Trinity for the favours and Graces showered on Saint Therese during the 24 years that she lived on this earth. The good father asked Saint Therese that as a sign that his novena was being heard, he would receive from someone a freshly plucked rose. On the third day of the novena, an unknown person sought out Father Putigan and presented him with a beautiful rose.  Father Putigan began the second novena on December 24 of the same year, and as a sign, asked for a white rose. On the fourth day of this novena, one of the Sister-nurses brought him a white rose, saying, “Saint Therese sent you this.”  Amazed the priest asked “where did you get this?”   “I was in the chapel,” said the Sister, “and as I was leaving, I passed the alter above which hangs the beautiful picture of Saint Therese. This rose fell at my feet. I wanted to put it back in the bouquet, but a thought came to me that you should have it.”

Here is how the Twenty-four ‘Glory Be’s Novena to St. Therese is prayed:

The Glory Be is said 24 times each day for nine days, in thanksgiving for all the blessings and favours given to Saint Therese of the Child Jesus during the 24 years of her life. Start the novena each day with this prayer:

“Holy Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit, I thank You for all the blessings and favours You have showered upon the soul of Your servant Therese of the Child Jesus, during the 24 years she spent here on earth, and in consideration of the merits of this, Your most beloved Saint, I beseech You to grant me this favour, if it is in accordance with Your most Holy Will and is not an obstacle to my salvation.”

After this prayer, follow with the 24 Glory Be’s, between each of which should be included this short prayer”

“Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, pray for us.”

We will also be praying the Little Flower Novena each evening.  I plan to post the prayers here each day. Here are the prayers for Day One:

Amen.

First Day

St. Thérèse, privileged Little Flower of Jesus and Mary, I approach you with childlike confidence and deep humility. I lay before you my desires, and beg that through your intercession they may be realized. Did you not promise to spend your heaven doing good upon earth? Grant me according to this promise the favors I am asking from you.

Intercede for us all the days of our life, but specially during this Novena and obtain for us from God the graces and favors we ask through your intercession. Amen.

Thought for the day:  Confidence in God. We can never have too much confidence in the good God who is so powerful and so merciful. We obtain from Him as much as we hope for. If you are nothing, do you forget that Jesus is everything? You have only to lose your nothingness in His Infinity and think only of loving Him.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux ~ Pray for Us!

Our Little Christmas Rose. . .

. . . is 9 Months Old Today!

It seems like it was just last September when we anxiously awaiting her arrival!  The time is flying by way too fast. . .

Since I am so awful about recording anything in that cute baby book I ordered for her . . .  (It was actually my 2nd choice… The one I really wanted – When You Were Very Small A Catholic Baby’s Record – and ordered months before she was born, ended up being backordered and then my order was finally canceled a few months ago since the book had been discontinued.  Boohoo! I knew I should have bought multiple copies the last time I ordered it as a gift.), Here is another little update so that I will be able look back and fill in all those blank pages someday:

Today’s Weight :  15 pounds

She is such a tiny little thing!   I had to take her in today for a weight check and, as usual, the doctors are a little concerned.  However, I am sure that she is just taking after her older siblings, in addition to constantly burning way too many calories since she refuses to sit still for very long.

Milestones:

  • She is now standing up by herself without holding on to anything or having any help, though she hasn’t attempted to take any steps without holding on to something.  I have a feeling it won’t be long!
  • Her very first tooth broke through on August 25th (bottom right), her 2nd tooth (bottom right) broke through on September 4th, and her top tooth (on the left) broke through last Wednesday, September 8th.   This past week she has been grinding those teeth together ALL THE TIME and I don’t know what to do to get her to stop! Any suggestions?  (Oohh!!  Speaking of teeth, Twinkle Toes just lost her 7th tooth this evening – 2nd on the top left.   Hummmm… I wonder what the tooth fairy is going bring?!?)
  • Yesterday she started saying both Dada (when she is happy!) and Mama (when hungry, of course!).  It is SO cute!

New St. Therese the Little Flower Faith Folder from Faith Folders for Catholics ~ Review & Giveaway!

With the feast of St. Therese coming up this next month, I was so excited to have the opportunity to review Holy Learning‘s (previously Faith Folders for Catholics) newest release – the St. Therese the Little Flower Faith Folder!

In the past our family has enjoyed a number of other Faith Folders (aka Lap Books) from Faith Folders for Catholics including the Advent Lap Book, Lent Lap Book, and most recently the Year for Priests Lap Book.  They all turned out beautifully and I just love seeing my children pull them back out from time to time to look through (or show others!) their work.

Like all of the other Faith Folders we have enjoyed, Lindy (owner of Faith Folders for Catholics) has done an amazing job at putting together a lovely collection of mini-books for this Folder on St. Therese, from the sweet little rose shaped book containing “Words of the Little Flower,” to the “Road to Carmel” pick a tab book, and so many more.

One of my favorite features is that multiple options for printing the mini-books are included!  For example, you can print the mini-books in either black & white or in color (I will often print the black & white version onto a color paper of our choice to save on ink), and there is usually the option between pre-typed text or blank lines for the children to fill in themselves, making the folder easily adaptable for a variety of ages and grade levels.

My children are very excited to start working on this new Faith Folder as we prepare to celebrate the Feast of St. Therese!  Will you join us?

The St. Therese the Little Flower Faith Folder can be purchased from Holy Learning (previously Faith Folders for Catholics) for only $10 (Digitial E-Book Option) or $14 (CD-Rom Option).

Faith Folders for Catholics has also offered to give-away one digital copy of this new Faith Folder to a visitor here at Shower of Roses!

To enter this give-away:

  • Leave a comment on this post before Midnight on Tuesday, September 21, 2010. (One Entry)
  • Become a Fan of Faith Folders for Catholics on Facebook, or I should say click the “Like” button!  (One Entry)
  • Follow Shower of Roses. (One Entry)
  • Blog about this giveway, or share this post on Facebook. (One Entry)

Please leave a separate comment (up to four!) for each of your entries.   The winner will be chosen with a random number generator (the comments are numbered – so each comment earns you an extra entry) on Wednesday, September 22nd and announced here at Shower of Roses.  Be sure to leave your email address, or have it linked in your profile, so I am able to contact you.   Thank you!

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
