36. The City Gates

Let the children build their own city gates!

“Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues, and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And in the Spirit he carried me away to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed; on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.” Revelation 21: 9-14

37. The Temple

Shirley Temples

Ingredients:
Lemon-Lime Soda
Grenadine
Maraschino Cherries
Ice Cubes

Directions:
Pour lemon-lime soda into a glass containing ice cubes.
Add a dash of grenadine to it and stir.
Garnish with the maraschino cherry

“And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine upon it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light shall the nations walk; and the kings of the earth shall bring their glory into it, and its gates shall never be shut by day — and there shall be no night there.” Revelation 21:22-25

38. Hallelujah!

Play the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s “Messiah

“Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunderpeals, crying, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure” — for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are true words of God.” Revelation 19: 6-9

39. The Thrones

Have the Children decorate “Thrones” at each end of the table for the “Bride” and the “Groom” (aka: Mom and Dad)!

“Then he showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. There shall no more be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and his servants shall worship him; they shall see his face, and his name shall be on their foreheads. And night shall be no more; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they shall reign for ever and ever.” Revelation 22: 1-5

40. The Bride

Decorated Stawberries make really cute “Brides and Grooms.”

Bride Strawberries

Use the recipe provided for the Groom Strawberries, omitting the dark chocolate and adding additional white sprinkles or decorations.

“And I will make for you a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the creeping things of the ground; and I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land; and I will make you lie down in safety. And I will betroth you to me for ever; I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. I will betroth you to me in faithfulness; and you shall know the LORD.” Hosea 2: 18-20

41. The Groom

Groom Strawberries

Ingredients:
24-30 strawberries, fresh
6 ounces of white chocolate
8 ounces of dark chocolate

Directions:
Wash and dry the strawberries, making sure the berries are fully dry as water will cause chocolate to seize up. Melt the white chocolate in a double boiler or microwave. Follow the melting directions on the package. Dip the strawberry in the white chocolate, holding onto the stem or the “shoulders” of the strawberry. Give it a quick little twist and shake with your fingers to shake off the excess and then point it at the ceiling for a second or two to ensure that the chocolate adheres. Place on a piece of wax paper to let dry. Melt the dark chocolate according to the instructions on the package. Dip the strawberry in at a 45 degree angle from both sides to make the “jacket”. Let the excess drip off. Place on wax paper to dry. Place some melted dark chocolate into a piping bag with a very small tip, or in a ziplock bag with the little corner snipped off and pipe on buttons and bow tie. Allow to dry and cool. (If drying seems to go too slowly, place them in the freezer for about 3-5 minutes.) Best eaten the day they are made.

Lots of ideas for Crown Cakes can be found in the archives over at Catholic Cuisine.

“You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My delight is in her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a young man marries a virgin, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.” Isaiah 62: 3-

Our Fourth Good Shepherd’s Garden Party : The Wind and Sea Obey Him!

Since the fourth week of The Garden of the Good Shepherd: A Sticker Calendar to Count the Fifty Days of Easter is based on the theme “The Wind and Sea Obey Him,”  it worked out just perfectly that our week began with a trip to the see the “Sea!”

We finished up the week with our Good Shepherd’s Garden Party on Saturday night and, as usual, it was enjoyed by everyone.

Here are a few pictures from our party:

After seeing their new “Sea” themed tablecloth at Target on Friday, complete with lots of little fishies and octopuses, I just had to get it for our table this week! I also decorated with some Fishing Net (from the dollar store) and Pinwheels (the Pinwheel Straws were from Pier 1 and napkins were also from Target, though purchased and forgotten for last week!).
~ The Boat, Mast and Sail ~
Since we made Banana Boats during B Week, we decided to try Charlotte’s Apple Boats.   We had a difficult time getting the pretzels to stay up in the peanut butter (versus the ice cream of our Banana Boats) so we ended up propping them up with some cute pinwheel picks.
~ The Net ~
In addition to the decorative net on the table, we also had net shaped pretzels!
~ The Fish ~
Snuggles, wearing his new little apron, was my big helper for this Garden Party.  He was especially excited about placing the fish on the table and then pointing out (and signing) all the starfish!

It was also super cute to watch him try to make his pinwheel spin.  At least the wind, which was coming through the open windows and screen door, helped him out from time to time!

~ The Barbecue ~
Oh my goodness!  Thank you Charlotte for sharing your Pulled Barbecue Pork recipe with us!  Yummmmm!!  I won’t be waiting until next year to make it again, that’s for sure!
~ The Leviathan ~
The Octopus Cupcakes were a hit, and after the party everyone headed outside with their new bubbles!
~ A Few More Pictures ~

Instead of “Sea” Water, my children picked out Blue Sky Soda’s at the store on Friday.

~ Our Calendar This Week ~

Our Sticker Calendar is starting to fill up as we continue to add the symbol for each day!

I can’t wait to see everyone else’s Garden Parties over at Catholic Cuisine

Little Flowers Girls’ Club ~ Perseverance

Today was our very last Little Flowers Girls’ Club Meeting for this school year and Wreath 2!  The meeting was based on the virtue of Perseverance, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, and the Lotus Flower.

Since we have been meeting every two weeks this Spring, to catch up from our Winter/Baby break, plus all the other things we’ve had going on, I just haven’t been able to keep up with sharing about Little Flowers.   I am still planning on going back and posting about our last two meetings, but right now I am just going to share about today.   It was a great meeting and we all had so much fun!

~ Coloring Pages ~

Since this was our last meeting for the summer, and since the girls were making Hawaiian Leis Lotus Necklaces, we decorated with a Palm Trees, Lei’s and other Luau decorations.  (Thank you Marci for bringing all the decorations!) It really made for a fun and festive last meeting!

I actually had 3 coloring pages for the girls to choose from, and then had to go and copy more since they all wanted one of each!  I don’t blame them since I couldn’t choose just one either!
The first one was emailed to me by of my visitors here at Shower of Roses (Thank you Maureen!).  She got it from the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in MD.
The other two coloring pages are both from Catholic Artworks.  One is from the Faith Keepers Combo and the other is from their new Faith Keepers God Bless America!  (I’m not sure if this can be ordered yet or not, but it should be available soon and it includes the “Saints in America and a title of Mary for all 50 States!”)

I also wanted to print out Paper Dali’s St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Paper Doll for all the girls, but I ran out of time. My girls enjoyed making it during E Week.

~ Meeting ~
Since Rose was born I have been assigning the different moms each one of the lessons to present to the girls.  This has been such a huge help!  This week my friend Dee Dee gave the lesson.  After reading about St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, she explained the virtue of Perseverance and read the story The Tortoise and the Hare.   I loved how the girls were all sitting at the beginning of the story and moved closer and closer as she continued reading!
~ Notebook Pages ~

For the notebook pages, I used the memory verse for Perseverance, A quote from Robert Louis Stevenson, this beautiful image of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, a quote from the Bible, and some lotus flowers.  You can download my document here.

Here is the sample page I created:

The girls all did a wonderful job as usual!

~ Craft ~
During the last couple meetings I have been setting up two tables and splitting up the girls during craft time.  Half of them go to one table to work on the craft while the others work on their notebook pages, and then they rotate.
This week we had two crafts.  Lotus Necklaces and a little gift to give their moms at our upcoming Tea Party!

The kits were purchased from Oriental Trading.  They included flower petals, straws, string and a plastic needle.  Very basic, yet very cute!  The girls had fun making them.

Since most of the girls mothers read my blog, I can’t show you a picture of the other craft.

“MOM!! Don’t look!” . . .  As they quickly hide what they are working on! 😉

~ Snack Time ~
Late last night I realized that the person who was suppose to be bringing the snack was not going to be at the meeting today.  Yikes!!  I got online and started trying to figure out what I could possibly make with the limited baking supplies in my pantry right now.  Basically NOT MUCH!
So, this morning I called my friend Marci to help me brainstorm, and after telling her my ideas:  Colonial Brown Bread (which sounds delicious, but isn’t the sweet treat the girls look forward to at Little Flowers), these Upside Down Peach Cupcakes (that would sort of tie in to the “color” peach for the meeting), or these Edible Crayons, since St. Elizabeth Ann Seton was a teacher (which I’ve been wanting to make since last year and would be SO COOL, but I just didn’t have enough time to go to the store with all 6 kids).
Marci loved the last idea and insisted on doing it for me (despite the fact that her daughter is sick and was going to miss the meeting), and headed to the store herself, made the “crayons” and then brought them over for the meeting.
Aren’t they CUTE?!?!

Edible Crayons

Ingredients:
  • Pretzel Rods
  • Candy Melts (or white chocolate bark/chocolate chips with a little of your favorite food coloring added)
  • Paper Labels (make them yourself from construction paper with black squiggly lines)
Instructions:
  • Break or cut pretzel rods in half.
  • Melt candy melts or chocoalte chips in microwave on medium heat for 1 minute. Stir and continue cooking at 15 second intervals until melted. Stir well. Add a few drops food coloring if desired.Dip ends of pretzels in melted candy.
  • Place on wax paper or aluminum foil to dry.
  • When dry, wrap with labels and secure with tape.
Marci bought a couple large boxes of crayons and used the cardboard boxes for displaying and serving the edible crayons.  Four fit perfectly in each box.   We then printed out a picture of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton for the outside of each box!

The girls LOVED the Edible Crayons!
Marci also picked up some Palm Tree Straws from the Dollar Store.
(These would also be great for the Week 5 Garden Party!)

We need to assign a “blog name” to the sweet little girl in the top left!
The rest of the girls are as follows:
 Daisy, Hope and Faith, Chiquita
Twinkle Toes, Branch and Blossom

Twenty Questions… Or less!

I don’t have much time this morning, since I am preparing for our last Little Flowers meeting this afternoon, but since I typed this post up last night I thought I would go ahead and post it since I wanted to record one more memory from our trip to the coast.

On the drive over we had so much fun teaching the children how to play Twenty Questions. . .  For T Week! 😉

Here is how the first couple games went after explaining how to play:

Game One
Me: “Okay, I am thinking of something.”
Captain: “Is it a person?”
Me: “Yes.”
Hubby: “Is it Pope Benedict?”
Me (laughing): “Are you serious!?! Yep, that was FAST! Now it is your turn.”
Game Two
Hubby: “Okay, I am ready.”
Me: “Is it a place?
Hubby: “Yes.”
Twinkle Toes: “Daddy, is it the Ocean?”
Hubby: “Yes!”
And just like that it was Twinkle Toes turn. It was too funny! She finally came up with something that was slightly harder for the rest of us to guess, but Rascal guessed it (Daddy) on the 6th question (“Does he wear glasses?). We continued playing for at least an hour before moving on to another car game.

Since Sunday we have played quite a few times.  Last night, on our way home from town the girls and I played another game:

Twinkle Toes:  “I’m ready!”
Chiquita:  “Is it a person?”
Twinkle Toes (hesitantly):  “Yes.”
Me: “Is he living?”
Twinkle Toes: “Ummm. What do you mean?”
Me: “Is he alive, or has died and is in Heaven?”
Twinkle Toes:  “Ummmm.  Both.”
Chiquita:  “Is it JESUS?!”
Twinkle Toes (smiling):  “Yes, you guessed it!  Jesus rose from the dead and now lives in Heaven!”

It’s been so sweet listening to them play this game!

Alright, I have to get back to work or I am never going to be ready by this afternoon.  I hope you all have a great day!

A Trip to the Coast

Although Hubby and I went to the Coast for our 10th anniversary last year, it has been a LONG time since we have taken our children to the Ocean. So long, in fact, that the three oldest (who were only 3, 1 1/2, and 1 month old at the time) only “remember” seeing it in the pictures.

So, when Hubby suggested last Friday that we head over for a day trip, we were all VERY excited.  It was also just the motivation I needed to get back on track with our Alphabet Path!  (We finished S Week just before Easter and have been trying over and over to start T with little success.  It was a perfect opportunity to review and be inspired to move on to learning about Tide Pools and Tall Trees!)

Since the weather was going to be a little better on Sunday, we decided to drive over then and left early enough to attend an 11 a.m. Mass in one of the coastal towns.  After Mass we picked up coffees and headed down to the beach.

~ T is for Trails ~

It took a bit of hiking, but we were determined to visit the tide pools.
~ At the Tide Pools ~

~ S is for Sea Stars ~
After Studying Sea Stars during S Week, finding this little Starfish was one of the highlights of the day!
~ The Scary Seagull ~

This Seagull totally scared Snuggles.  It wouldn’t leave us alone!  He was determined to take off with our lunch, but was only able to get away with the bag that contained it, which sent us scattering all over the beach to reclaim our snacks!
~ A Social Squirrel ~

This little squirrel wasn’t quite as aggressive as the seagull, but I am quite sure he would have sat on my lap if I would have let him get any closer.  Sorry little guy, the sign said “Don’t feed the wildlife!”
~ Ocean Waves and Currants ~
The three oldest ventured down to the water line to “touch” the ocean.
The boys are still talking about feeling the pull of the ocean currents.  We are off to the library today to find some more books on this topic.  Any suggestions?

~ Shadow Tag ~
Inspired by a friend, we played Shadow Tag on the beach.  So much fun!  I love this picture of Chiquita trying to protect her shadow from Twinkle Toes, who was “it.”  She ended up getting tagged!
Snuggles LOVED “tripping” in the tall beach grass!

~ T is for Tallest Trees ~

Before heading home we also made a stop at Stout Grove, the world’s most scenic stand of redwood trees.  This grove also contains the Stout Tree, which is the bulkiest known coast redwood. (It is 340 feet tall and 16 feet in diameter at chest height.)  The grove is absolutely breathtaking, but to tell you the truth, if Hubby hadn’t been there, I would have been totally spooked!  Next time we will have to make sure we visit when there is a little more light streaming through the trees.  (These pictures were taken shortly after arriving and it was just starting to get dark.  An hour or two earlier would have probably been perfect timing.)

My camera battery died just after arriving at Stout Grove, so that is it for pictures.  When we got back to town we treated the kids to Cheeseburgers and Blizzards (They were on special in honor of the Blizzard’s 25th Birthday!) and then headed home.

It was such a fun trip and I hope we are able to do it again soon!

A Prayer Request

It is with great sadness that I am posting tonight to ask you to please pray for my dear friend Charlotte, and her beautiful family, as they grieve the loss of another precious little soul.

Miscarriage Prayer

My Lord, the baby is dead!

Why, my Lord—dare I ask why? It will not hear the whisper of the wind or see the beauty of its parents’ face—it will not see the beauty of Your creation or the flame of a sunrise. Why, my Lord?

“Why, My child—do you ask ‘why’? Well, I will tell you why.

You see, the child lives. Instead of the wind he hears the sound of angels singing before My throne. Instead of the beauty that passes he sees everlasting Beauty—he sees My face. He was created and lived a short time so the image of his parents imprinted on his face may stand before Me as their personal intercessor. He knows secrets of heaven unknown to men on earth. He laughs with a special joy that only the innocent possess. My ways are not the ways of man. I create for My Kingdom and each creature fills a place in that Kingdom that could not be filled by another. He was created for My joy and his parents’ merits. He has never seen pain or sin. He has never felt hunger or pain. I breathed a soul into a seed, made it grow and called it forth.”

I am humbled before you, my Lord, for questioning Your wisdom, goodness, and love. I speak as a fool—forgive me. I acknowledge Your sovereign rights over life and death. I thank You for the life that began for so short a time to enjoy so long an Eternity.

— Mother M. Angelica

Our Third Good Shepherd’s Garden Party : The Heaven’s Tell God’s Glory

I am just now finding a free moment to post pictures from our third Good Shepherd’s Garden Party, while everyone is still sleeping.  I really wasn’t sure I was going to be able to pull it off this weekend, but we ended up having our party Saturday night for dinner.

Thankfully it was a very easy party to pull together since I didn’t have much energy or motivation after a week filled with so many other activities, not to mention our last minute plans for a day trip on Sunday.

The girls helped me set the table (they insisted on decorating with Chiquita’s new play silks) and then made the fruit kabobs, while I set out the rest of the menu items and made the “Thunder and Lightning” pasta.   The boys shared a new guessing game with us, which they had learned from some of the other boys at the park on Friday, and we had so much fun playing it during dinner.

Here are a few pictures from our party:

~ The Sun ~
I was just not up to baking (or eating!) any more cakes or cupcakes, especially after making a Fairy House Cake on Tuesday and the Dragon Cake on Friday, so I substituted with these Coconut Creme Cookies I found while picking up the cookies for Week 5
~ The Clouds ~
~ The Rain ~
My children really loved the Lightning Bolt straws!  Thank you Charlotte for making this so easy!!

~ Our Calendar ~
Well, it sounds like everyone is starting to wake up this morning, so it is time for me to get going…  I am looking forward to seeing everyone else’s Garden Parties over at Catholic Cuisine

On the Feast of St. George the Dragon Slayer

We are off to meet some friends at the park!  Before we go, here are a couple picture of this year’s dragon cake!

He didn’t turn out nearly as cute as I would have liked, but I don’t think the kids will mind.

**Notes to self for next year**
  • Stick with the color green.  (This dragon started out orange peach and then ended up purple, at the request of my children.  I think he looked better green!)
  • Buy extra “extra” frosting.  (I thought that “extra” can would be more than enough, but ended up not being able to frost the Ding Dongs poor dragons thighs and feet.  Oh well!)
  • Fondant makes MUCH better flames than Gummy Worms! 😉
  • Don’t “hide” the Keebler Cookies.  (You will probably not be able to find them when it comes time to actually make the cake.  However, hershey kisses make an easy substitute for the spikes.)
If you’d like to make a dragon cake, don’t miss Charlotte’s new tutorials!
I hope you all have a very Happy Feast of St. George!

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
