My Daybook ~ September 7th

FOR TODAY: September 7, 2009  (Labor Day!)

Outside my Window… it chilly, but sunny, and there are pine needles everywhere!  It is beginning to really feel like Fall.

I am thinking… about how hard it is to get back on the computer after a few days offline.   😉

I am thankful… that Hubby is home safe and for all of your prayers!  Especially after hearing about Hubby’s helicopter flight while on the fire.  They had to assume crash position a couple times during that flight.  (The area he was working in tends to have lots of helicopter accidents for some reason. Last year one of my brother’s friends died in a crash, with the rest of the passengers, in this same area…)  A week later, when heading back to camp, his crew opted to hike the 8 miles out, rock cliffs and all,  rather than get back on the helicopter!

(If you look close you can see Hubby in the right picture.)
From the kitchen… thanks to Dawn, our home smells wonderful and dinner will be ready in a couple hours.  I am also thinking of making another Cherry Crisp for dessert.  The girls made it last week (during “C” week) in honor of the feast of St. Gregory and it was DELICIOUS!!!

From the school room… The boys are working on finishing their Pennsylvania Scrapbook Pages today and then we will move onto the second stop Along the American History Trail.  They also should finish up their first unit of World History this week, or possibly next.   The girls are loving the Alphabet path and this week is all about the letter “D”…   (Is this really our 4th week of school??  Time is FLYING!!)

Living the Liturgical year at Home… We’ll probably be celebrating the same special feasts as last year this week:  The Nativity of Mary, the feast of St. Peter Claver, and the Feast of The Most Holy Name of Mary.  (The links will take you to some of my old posts.)

I am creating… a post for “C” week. =)

I am readingCatching Fire(finally!!) Next up is Jane of Lantern Hill.  You can read Melissa Wiley’s excellent reviews on these books here and here.
I am going… to get off the computer so I can get back to my book.  😉

I am wearing… a long (to my ankles) jean maternity skirt (somewhat fitted on top and flared at the bottom/no slit) and a “Fern Green” long sleeve maternity tee.   I wish I could find a link to the skirt, it has been one of my favorites lately!

I am hoping… that I can accomplish everything I need to do this week and still be able to keep up with our school schedule.
I am hearing… the Flower Fairy Alphabet playing while the girls Draw and the boys discussing the colors of the feathers on the Ruffed Grouse (the bird of Pennsylvania).

Around the house… lots of book baskets!

One of my favorite things… learning Along the Alphabet Path with my girls!! We’ve been having so much fun!

A Few Plans For This Week

  • Tuesday:  Couple’s Bunco!
  • Wednesday:  Doctors appointment
  • Thursday: My first Little Flowers Meeting for the year
  • Friday: Mass & Benediction
  • Saturday: Catch my breath after a busy busy week! 😉

A picture thought I am sharing:

To see more Daybook’s visit Peggy!

Oh!  And before I go, today is the last chance to enter the Catholic Tote Bag and Catholic Cuisine Apron giveaways!  Be sure to add your name to the comments before midnight tonight.  I’ll announce the winners tomorrow.   Good luck!

One Week Later…

I finally received a phone call from Hubby, and he is actually ON HIS WAY HOME!!!  The job he was doing on this particular fire is completed and, with a holiday weekend coming up, the fire management wanted to get as many men off the clock as possible.  It will be so nice to have him home!

Right now I am going to get busy picking up around here and planning a “real” dinner for the first time since last Thursday.  😉   Thank you all for your prayers for his safety.   I hope you all have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!

Building a Model Solar System

The boys have really been enjoying Exploring Creation With Astronomy. (And what a perfect year to study it, since it is the International Year of Astronomy!)  The topic for our first few weeks has been “What is Astronomy?”  In addition to reading their textbook, the boys have started putting together their Astronomy Notebook, as well as Lap Books.   This past week they also built a model solar system.   To keep it simple, I purchased a kit for them to use, and we all had so much fun!  Even the girls were able to help with some of the painting.   Here are a few pictures:

Next week we will be moving on to Lesson 2 and start learning more about “The Sun.”

Book Review: The Miracle of Me

My latest book to review for The Catholic Company is the Miracle of Me by Amy B. Pederson.   Since we are expecting another little miracle this coming Christmas, I was very excited to recieve this book and, hopefully, share it with my children.

The book is written from the unborn baby’s perspective and is all about life in the womb from conception to birth.    Each week has a short little poem about what is going on at that point.

For example, since I’ll be 24 weeks this Friday, here is a little excerpt for Week 24:

“Every day, I hear sounds
that my Mommy’s body makes.
Her beating heart, her pretty voice,
and every breath she takes.”

Isn’t that cute!?!  The book is filled with these sweet little poems, one for each week of pregnancy.   I love that it also includes rulers, and lots of real in-utero photos of the growing baby, which capture the awe-inspiring miracle of the growing baby inside the womb.

Speaking of the photos though, I must note my one objection to this book.  There are a couple photos which I didn’t care for and would rather not show my young children, particularly my boys.  However, since I really like the rest of this book, I figured it would be easy enough to fix this little problem by pasting a couple pictures of my choice over the ones in the book.  For example, one is from week 33 and is a picture of the mother’s bare tummy (and upper leg) which shoes the baby kicking.  (Perhaps if it was a little more cropped?)

Other than that, I have enjoyed looking through this book, and seeing just what my own baby is up to each week, while anxiously waiting for week 40 to arrive…

“The waiting is hard I know
God will send you strength from above
And just when you think you can’t wait anymore,
I will be there for you to love.”

Only 16 more weeks until Christmas!

This review was written as part of The Catholic Company reviewer program. Please visit The Catholic Company to get more information on The Miracle of Me.

Another Little Saint…

Earlier today I was devastated to hear the heartbreaking news that Colleen’s little boy, Bryce Philip Mitchell, died in his sleep this afternoon.

I am still in shock and, even though I know what it is like to lose a baby, I never seem to have the right words to say…   I just wanted to ask you all to please pray for comfort and healing for Colleen and her family, and to ask their new little saint to intercede on their behalf.

Last summer, my little nephew also died in his sleep.  I know how hard it is on the family, not to mention the unexpected financial burden this places on the parents when they are already dealing with so much suffering…

Elizabeth has set up a Memorial Fund for little Bryce to help defray the costs of the funeral.  Please considering donating!  Be generous if you can, but even little donations can add up fast when we all join together…  Thank you!

“Jesus said to her:  I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:  And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever.”  ~ John 11:25-26

~ B is for St. Bernadette ~
(I decided to paint an Alphabet of Saints, instead of making them out of felt, last year.  I posted about them here.  My children have really enjoyed playing with all of our little wooden saints, even though I ended up having to postpone the Alphabet Path till this year!)

St. Bernadette Coloring Page

We took a little virtual pilgrimage to the grotto and walked in the footsteps of St. Bernadetteand then watched a couple of our favorite movies about St. Bernadette: Bernadette: The Princess of Lourdes and The Song of Bernadette.
~ B is also for Bible and St. Brendan ~
~ B is for Blankets ~
(They even have Bumblebees and Birds on them!)

We weren’t able to make Chiquita’s blanket until Saturday morning:

The girls LOVE their new blankets!
~ B is for Blueberries ~

Blueberries for Sal
Peter in Blueberry Land
Blueberry Pie Elf

(I have to add that I was so, SO, SOOOO very excited to see that they printed a “facsimile edition” of the old version of the Blueberry Pie Elf and I immediately ordered a copy!  I already owned a copy of this version, which I purchased at a used book sale, but the illustrations just didn’t compare…  I have such wonderful memories of my dad reading this story to me as a child and the illustrations in this book bring back those memories so clearly!)

Blueberry Matching Cards

BlueBerry Faces for Breakfast

Blue Banana Boats
(here’s the recipe )

And “B” Week just wouldn’t be complete without a Birthday Celebration, or TWO !!

My Daybook ~ August 31, 2009

FOR TODAY: August 31st, 2009

Outside my Window… it looks like it is going to be another beautiful and sunny day!

I am thinking… about how different it is when hubby is gone on a fire now.  When we were first married, I used the time to visit friends, watch movies, catch up on projects and so much more.  Now it seems like I can just barely keep up with everything! I am sure it will get a little bit easier as the week goes on…

I am thankful… that hubby was able to call home last night, even if it was just for a couple minutes. (The call lasted one minute and fifty-one seconds to be exact!)  It was he first time I had spoken with him since he left, early last Friday morning.  It was so nice to hear his voice, find out where he is working, and that he was able to say Happy Birthday to Twinkle Toes.  He was calling from a satellite phone, which is why he had to keep it so short, from their site camp in the wilderness.  (Their food and supplies are being flown in each day.)

From the kitchen… lots of leftovers from yesterday.

From the school room… Today the girls begin “C” week.  Hopefully I will have a chance to post some pictures from “B” week soon.  It was a great week, but with Twinkle Toes’ Birthday this weekend I didn’t have a chance to upload any photos, yet…  =)

Living the Liturgical year at Home… I’m working on a compiling a post over at Catholic Cuisine with all the archives for the September feasts!   (Update:  Here’s the link!) September 5th is the feast of Blessed Mother Teresa, so we will probably make some Indian Sweet Bread and Chai Tea like last year.

I am creating… t-shirts for our Little Flowers Group.  I sure hope the appliques I ordered from Michaels arrive in time.  Our first meeting is NEXT WEEK!

I am reading… lots of books to my children.  Last week our basket included books about St. Bernadette, Birds, Blueberries and other things that start with B.  This week we are moving on to St. Cecilia, St. Christopher, Creeks & Ponds and more!
I am going… to my Aunt’s for a visit and then to our Home School Group’s annual planning meeting tomorrow night.

I am wearing… a pair of black knit gauchos and pink maternity t-shirt.  I am hoping to find a little time to exercise after lunch.

I am hoping… that I can keep up with school this week.  I didn’t have any time to finalize my plans for the week over the weekend, and my evenings have been super busy without Hubby’s help.
I am hearing… the children getting up and dressed for school.  Breakfast is simple this morning, cold cereal.  Perfect for “C” week, right!?!

Around the house… lots of birthday decorations that I was just too tired to take down last night!  Twinkle Toes had so much fun at her little party, I’ll have to upload a few pictures soon.  I am also behind on the laundry and the floors all need to be cleaned.   Why is it SO easy to get SO behind SO fast?!?

One of my favorite things… all of my wonderful memories of my Grandmother. (My Grandma passed away at the age of 61 when I was only 12.  I was her first Grandchild and we were very close.)  Yesterday, during Twinkle Toes birthday party, I couldn’t help but think how much my children would have loved her, and could picture her singing “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” like she always did on my birthdays!  Miss you Grandma!

A Few Plans For This Week

  • Our third week of school
  • Our Home School Group’s planning meeting
  • Mass & Benediction on Friday

A picture thought I am sharing:

I just love this picture from a couple weeks ago, when my cousin and her family came over for a visit.   Her son was showing our daughter a little froggy they had caught!

Well, I must get going if I hope to start our school day on time.  I hope you all have a great week!

To see more Daybook’s visit Peggy!

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
