Craft Basket Wednesday

My friend Amy has been hosting a “Craft Basket Wednesday” for a couple months now, and although I’ve wanted to join in I just haven’t found the time for much “crafting” lately.

However, this week I’ve been working on finishing up a little set of Carmelite dolls, which had been sitting in the cupboard since the fall.  It looks like Amy and I are both making Carmelites this week!!

Yesterday I added their eyes, and I am still trying to decide if I want to add mouths and perhaps some praying hands as well. Or perhaps I should add a crucifix and roses and turn them all into little mini St. Therese dolls… What do you think?

While I am at it, I thought I would also share a picture of my St. Catherine of Siena.  I painted her awhile back and never did post a picture.  I am hoping to make another one like her for one of our Goddaughters!

So, what crafts have you been working on lately?

Updated to add these other views as well:

My Daybook ~ January 25th

Outside my window… lots of leaves and pine needles from the windstorms of last week.

I am hearing… A Flower Fairy Alphabet and my children singing along as they color pictures of the Pansy Fairy.  It’s such a fun CD!

I am thankful for…  the support being shown by this wonderful online community.  Thank you to all of you that have donated to help Marci and are praying for her family.
May God reward you for your kindness and generosity!

I am praying… the Angelus every day at noon thanks to the bell chimes on my iTouch.
From the kitchen…  I’m doing much better about making sure I am eating well, getting plenty of protien and not overdoing it on sugar.  Did you know that the Costco muffins have over 600 calories in each one?  Yikes!  No wonder I was gaining instead of losing weight!
From the learning rooms…  The boys are plugging away at their various subjects.   The girls just began “P” week.  We’ve read about Michael and the Pansy Fairy, and will be learning more about St. Patrick, Penguins, Peacocks, and making Petal People!   The girls will also be making a treat, or two, from the Pink Princess Cookbook.  The Pink Princess Pudding sounds Perfect for P week!  (Thank you Charlotte for Pointing out this fun looking cookbook and Amazon for your free trial on Prime shipping!)
Living the Liturgical Year at Home… Since today is the feast of the conversion of St. Paul, we’ll be coloring Charlotte’s lovely coloring page and read at least part of Adventures of Saint Paul.  This coming Sunday we will celebrate the feast of St. John Bosco with Skillet Lasagna and a family movie night, as usual.
I am creating… a little set of painted wooden Carmelite nuns for the girls.  Painting St. Odelia and Our Lady of Altagracia during O Week has me excited about painting a few more saints.
I am wearing… a Bamboo Belly Bandit and it really seems to be helping, especially my lower back and posture.
I am going… to watch the first episode of Emma online this week.  I’m so excited!
I am reading… or rather, am planning on reading these posts, via my iTouch, the next time I sit down to nurse Rose.  Sounds like just what I need right about now!
Pondering these words… from St. Francis de Sales:

“Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit.
Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever,
even if your whole world seems upset.”
I am hoping… that I will have the energy and motivation to go to our annual “Mom’s Night Out” at my friend Stasia’s Friday night.   It sounds like so much fun, and it would be so nice to see everyone, but driving anywhere (let alone 45 minutes each way) with Rose right now completely overwhelms me.  We’ll see…
Noticing that… there is a HUGE difference between 5 and 6 children.  I think I have finally reached the point of not being able to take all my children grocery shopping with me.  Actually, just taking Rose is more than I can handle right now!

I am very thankful for my Hubby who has been doing some of the shopping, the groceries available on Amazon, and Alice.com. (Thank you to the person that left the tip on Alice.com on my last Daybook post!)  I just ordered Pledge, Paper Plates and Paper Towels, as well as a few other things and my total was only about $12 AND they ALWAYS offer Free Shipping.  I have a feeling it is going to come in very handy in the upcoming weeks.

(Here’s a link for $10 off, after you’ve spent $50, if you are interested in signing up! It’s free!)

Around the house… a couple bags of these are hiding in the kitchen cupboard. Ssshhh!!

One of my favorite things… My Catholic Faith. This book, which was originally printed in 1954, has had a permanent spot on the end table in our living room and is one of my very favorite books of all time.

A few plans for the rest of the week:

  • Try to go to the Post Office and Library at some point, or ask Hubby! 😉
  • Hockey Lessons on Saturday for the boys. They started last Saturday and had so much fun!

A Picture thought I am sharing:

Highlights from “O” Week

~ Letter Formation ~

In addition to their Modelling Wax letter O’s, the girls also worked on making the letter O using Handwriting Without Tears Hands-On Materials and Kimberlee’s Grey Block Paper.

Our Painted Saint Odilia
for with An Alphabet of Catholic Saints

I finally painted a couple more saints to add to our collection:  Saint Odilia and Our Lady of Altagracia (pictured below).   MUCH harder to do with a little baby who wants to be fed constantly, so this was a HUGE success!  😉

Saint Odilia Coloring Pages from Our Saints Alphabet on CD

(You can print the one I made here.)
~ O is for Our Lady of Altagracia~

A Gift of Gracias: The Legend of AltagraciaWe read A Gift of Gracias, which is about Our Lady of Altagracia.  We then discussed the book using the discussion questions in Catholic Mosaic, colored the beautiful picture found in Fenestrae Fidei, and then made homemade Orange Smoothies!

I didn’t know until after posting the recipe at Catholic Cuisine, but this particular drink is very popular in the Dominican Republic, where Our Lady of Altagracia appeared, and is called “Morir Soñando!”

We also colored Lydia’s lovely coloring page on Obedience

and talked about “Offering” from God’s Alphabet.

EAT:
An Ocean Octopus Lunch

Directions:

Cook your hotdog and then cut it lengthwise into eight parts (legs) leaving an inch or so for the head. (I only had Hebrew National Hot Dogs, so was only able to cut it into six legs.)

Break apart 1 graham cracker and use peanut butter to “glue” the four pieces together. Fill the “Treasure Chest” with anything you want. I used raisins and fruit snacks.

Drape Mr. Hotdogtopus over the Treasure Chest. Cut a raisin in half and use the sticky side to adhere it to the hotdog for eyes.

MAKE:
Or rather we PLANNED to make

Octopus Handprints
but never did get around to it…

Mini Spotted Owl Finger Puppet by Folkmanis

The rest of our “O” Puppets came out including:
River Otter Finger Puppet

I had a few ideas for owls from our Garden of the Good Shepherd Activity Plans, and I also considered making Charlotte’s adorable Owl Cupcakes, but we ended up making Cookies and Sandwiches instead.  It was such a HOOT! 😉

Owl Cookies

(I love the “OWL” on the fridge — I didn’t notice until taking the picture!)
I found these yummy cookies here.

Owl Cookies

  • 1 1/3 cup shortening, (or margarine) soft
  • 2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 cups crunchy peanut butter
  • 2 2/3 all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 cups oatmeal
  • 2 1-oz envelope no-melt chocolate (I use 6 tbs. of cocoa powder mixed with 2 tbs. of oil or melted butter instead.)
  • Semisweet chocolate chips
  • Whole cashews
Combine shortening and sugar; beat until creamy. Add egg, vanilla and peanut butter; blend thoroughly. Sift (or just combine) flour, baking powder and salt together. Add to creamed mixture; blend well. Stir in oatmeal. Divide dough in half. Shape one half to form two rolls, each 8-inches long. Add chocolate to the remaining dough. Roll out chocolate dough on waxed paper to form two 8-inch squares. Place one roll on one square of chocolate dough. Wrap chocolate dough around roll; pinch seam together. Repeat for the other roll and square. Wrap in waxed paper; chill for at least 1 hour. Let stand at room temperature for 10 minutes before cutting. Cut into 1/4 to 1/2 inch slices. Pinch chocolate dough to form 2 ears for each owl face. Use 2 chocolate chips for eyes and 1 cashew for beak. Place on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake in preheated 350-degree oven for about 12-15 minutes.  Don’t stack until the eyes have hardened!

Owl Sandwiches

“Make any sandwich you would like and then cut the sides off as shown. Take the pieces and flip them backwards to make them fit as shown.  Cut a large marshmallow in half for the base of the eyes. Cut a raisin in half for the eyes, and another raisin for the beak.”

* I was out of  Marshmallows, so we used Oreo’s (Golden and Mini) instead, which I think turned out even cuter!

~ Other ~

We also had Oatmeal, Omelets, Cherri-O’s, Oranges and Olives!

OH!  And our little Rose turned One Month Old!

My Daybook ~ January 20th

Outside my window… It’s a rather blustery day!!  Right now we have sustained winds of 25-35 mph with gusts of 45-50 mph.  Monday was the first day of these really strong winds and unfortunately it knocked over, and broke, one of our outdoor statues of Mary on Monday… My children were the first to notice and were so sad!

I am hearing… the children watching Liberty’s Kids and the baby hiccuping.

I am thinking… about the rough draft of the floor plan for our addition.  We did end up hiring an engineer/architect to draw plans for us and it is proving to be quite challenging to fit what I would like into the space that we have.  The laundry room has been particularly difficult since, in order to make my kitchen a little wider, it will become smaller.  Decisions, decisions… and I am too sleep deprived to think clearly right now!

I am thankful for… my mom.  She watched our children while the baby and I went to town for my postpartum check up and groceries yesterday (Tuesday).  With the extra driving (my parents live even farther from town than we do, and in the opposite direction) I ended up being gone from 8:45 am until 6 pm, and I only managed to make it to the Doctors and Costco (with a quick dash through the drive thru at Starbucks),  but thankfully my mom also had me send along their school work which they were able to complete before I got back from town.

I am praying… for the son of one of my mom’s dear friends.  His name is Tony and he is not much older than myself.  I don’t know him that well, though he did install the blinds in our home a few years back.  He was admitted to Intensive Care just after Christmas and needs a miracle.

Update:  Tony did pass away yesterday, January 20th.  Please say a prayer for the repose of his soul, as well as for his dear mother Helen.

From the kitchen… I have been feeding my family, but not remembering to eat breakfast (and sometimes lunch) myself.  Not good.  Coffee or Hot Cocoa and snacking on leftover Christmas treats and birthday cake does not make for a Happy momma by the afternoon.  I am now trying to cut back on sugar and make sure I eat some protein in the morning.

From the learning rooms… Everything seems to be taking so much longer than it did last year… Probably because it IS taking longer.  We are plugging away though, getting what we can done and saving the rest for the next day.

Last week the girls had a so much fun working on “O” Week, but with the holiday on Monday, and day in town on Tuesday, we are spending this week continuing “O” and will move onto “P” next week.   I will post some pictures from “O” week soon.

Living the Liturgical Year at Home… January 21st is the feast of Our Lady of Altagracia.  We will be making homemade Orange Smoothies and reading A Gift of Gracias: The Legend of Altagracia.

I am creating… a revised floor plan so we can meet with the engineer again soon.

I am wearing… my baby!  I finally purchased a Moby Wrap and it is perfect.

I am going… to be writing a few more thank you notes.  I am just amazed by all the kindness and generosity of our friends both in real life and online.

Christmas gifts from dear friends in Norway which arrived on my birthday!
These lovely packages filled with darling toys and yummy treats followed a package containing Lucia Crowns & Star Boys Hats for next years Santa Lucia celebration!  My children have been so excited!  Thank you Emma and family!

I am reading… The Family Manager Takes Charge: Getting on the Fast Track to a Happy, Organized Home.  I am in desperate need of some inspiration and motivation.  I am also re-reading parts of Real Learning: Education in the Heart of the Home for the same reason.

I am hoping… that I can find ways to go to town as seldom as possible in the upcoming weeks.  It is just too overwhelming right now.

Noticing that… my oven is actually my age.   It too was “born” in 1978.  I can’t believe it still works, though it has been re-wired a couple times by my dad.  Now I really feel old!

Around the house… it feels so cluttered.  Again.  I am looking forward to Lent and doing another 40 Bags of Stuff Challenge.  You know, I may not even wait until Lent to start…  Especially with how long everything seems to take now, if I start now I might just be able to finish by Easter!

One of my favorite things.. watching movies at night with my Hubby.  For our latest “date night” we watched the premier of 24:Season 8 online since we don’t have TV reception.   We’re looking forward to watching the next episode next week!

A few plans for the rest of the week:

The boys begin Hockey on Saturday and are VERY excited!  They got to try it out at the end of the last session and had so much fun.

A Picture thought I am sharing:

I woke up Saturday morning to lit candles on my birthday cake and birthday cards from my children. My Hubby insists that Happy Birthday must be sung and the candles blown out BEFORE opening any presents and he didn’t want to wait until after dinner AT ALL before giving me my gift.  He knew I would enjoy playing with it all day, and he was right!  I did insist on saving the cake till after dinner though!

*I wrote this post yesterday afternoon, though never had a chance to upload pictures and post until this morning.

State-by-State Scrapbook :: Massachusetts

“B’s the sound that can be found in
Boston town and Bunker Hill,
and bouncy, bouncy Basketball,
played first in Springfield —

What a thrill!”

B is also for Brown!!

We ended our study of by listening to his victory speech last night.
Way to go Massachusetts!!

Captain and Rascal read the book on their own, before we read it all together, and they came and asked me to help them pronounce the name of a lake.  I told them to sound it out and then took a look:
Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg

Seriously???!!!???
Thank goodness for YouTube!

This project has been slow going, but it has been so much fun to learn all sorts of fun details about each state as we work our way through the Discover America Books!  We better pick up the pace though if we want to finish even half of the states this year… It’s looking like this is going to end up being a two year project for the boys.

Next up is Maryland

Extraordinary Measures :: The Inspirational Quilt

Just after posting the video about our friends the Hadleys earlier today, I recieved an email from another friend letting us know about the upcoming movie, Extraordinary Measures, staring Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford.  This movie was inspired by the story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds to pursue a cure for his children’s life threatening disease.

To celebrate Crowley’s story, the Inspirational Quilt was created as a way to support charities.

The Hadley’s video has been submitted to this sweepstakes, which will end on January 29th!! Each and every vote they receive (You can vote daily!) will gain them an additional entry into a random drawing for a chance to receive a $10,000 contribution to their charity from CBS films.

I’ve already casted my vote for the Hadleys video today!  Won’t you please join me in supporting Hadley Hope in this way?  It only takes a second!  Thank you!!

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
