2025 Shower of Roses Christmas Gift Guide

I started this year’s Shower of Roses Christmas Gift Guide in October, but life has been so very full this year and it’s taken me until now to finish it up… Hopefully it will be helpful for any of you who, like me, are still trying to figure out and finalize Christmas gifts this year. This year’s gift guide isn’t quite as extensive as past years – you can find many many ideas in the archives from over the years – but my favorite part is always reading through my kids’ suggestions which are all included once again below!

I also don’t have as many giveaways for you this year – but you will find three amazing prize packages at the bottom of this post, including the ultimate Prize Package from Shining Light Dolls which was so generous of them!!! Be sure to scroll to the bottom and leave a comment to enter.

New Finds for Christmas

Our children have once again taken an active role in this year’s gift guide! I asked each of them to list nine gift ideas for me to share. Most of their suggestions are things they already own, with a few desired items included. Here are their answers:

Please note: Our children usually unwrap three gifts from my husband and I on Christmas morning. The kids also draw names on the first Sunday of Advent for Christkindl and end with a family Christkindl gift exchange. It’s always the first thing they want to do after our morning prayers (or morning Mass if we didn’t make it to the Midnight Mass) on Christmas Day! They also receive books on Epiphany (which often include many books that have been given to me to review, or school books for the next semester). The gift suggestions listed below have been received over a number of different years/occasions, handed down from older siblings, or on their wish list.

Captain’s Picks – Age 25

This list has become harder and harder to make as the things I want are things typically money can’t buy ie. time and memories with family and friends. After living nowhere near family or most of my friends, I can’t encourage others enough to take advantage of the opportunities you have to share with family and friends while you still can. Anyway, with that said, even though I now have an adult job that pays adult money and I’m able to buy most of the things I need, there are some things that would be fun to unwrap on Christmas! So let’s get into some of them that I’d recommend.

  • Calendars – I’ve put this on my list for the past few years now and I’m not ready to take it off yet 😂 but seriously they’re great! Whether they’re a day by day calendar or a month to month calendar.
  • Books!! – Have been getting back into reading more books especially now that I don’t have to read for school. It’s a great way to slow down, put the phone away, and relax! Have started reading a varitey of books such as historical biographies (The Endurance or The Edmond Fitzgerald are on my list to read next) and books that have a movie adaptation of it, like the Hobbit/LOTR (which I got last Christmas), or The Count of Monte Christo which I would like to read sometime)
  • Water Bottle /stickers – Can never have too many water bottles! Hydration is key especially if you live in the desert! And receiving a fun water bottle or stickers of some of your favorite whatevers to customize your bottle is a great gift! This is what my sister gave me last Christmas! LET’S WANDER National Park Water Bottle with Waterproof Stickers
  • Cookbooks/cooking utensils – I’ve always enjoyed cooking but since living on my own I’ve really been able to explore and try out new recipes! Not only is cooking well a great skill to have as it helps increase your menu but your future wife will be incredibly appreciative if you can whip up some incredible dishes! (Can’t speak from experience buuut if someone made me an amazing meal I’d be pretty stoked! 😂) Here is one option and here’s another if you’re looking for something a little more fun 👀
  • Faith related gifts – You aren’t fully complete if you neglect your faith life and receiving a faith related gift helps with that! Last year I got the Ascension Bible (the one that goes along with the Bible in a year) and it’s been great! Also, some spiritual books, or even books on the lives of the Saints would be perfect as the saints are great inspirations for us to model our lives after. Looking forward to starting this advent book that my mom gave me as an early gift!
  • LEGO 👀 seems a bit childish I know but hear me out!  😂😅 I don’t think I’ve put this on my list for a while buuut with some of the sets that have been coming out in the past few years there are some amazing sets to have on display in your house or apartment! Not only that, they are 3D puzzles that take days to build and like I said are great display pieces once completed!
  • Can never go wrong with gifting someone one of their favorite movies with box of goodies/snacks! Whether your by yourself or a group of friends watching your favorite movies with a box of gifted goodies is a perfect match!
  • Board games/card games! Can always bring them to friends and family gatherings if you’re looking for something that gets your competitive side going without needing to be too terribly active! May get an arm workout in if the game isn’t going your way and you decide to flip the table but I’ll let you figure that out! 😜😂
  • A fun shirt or sweater is always a fun gift! Whether it embraces your nerdy side, nostalgic childhood side, or something a little more mature, adding something new to wear in your wardrobe is always exciting 😅

Ranger’s Picks – Age 23

  • Tears of the Left Bourbon – Nothing beats good bourbon and know that with every sip a liberal had a second of sadness.
  • Hockey Visor – Definitely not for younger competitive leagues but in the old man beer leagues I’m playing in can afford to look cool without loosing any teeth
  • Milwaukee Tools – Electrical requires so many tools, thankfully as an apprentice you don’t need them all but it’s nice to be able to build up to it over time
  • Tool Belt – Can’t build a tool collection without somewhere to keep them
  • Neuschwanstein LEGO Castle – “For the kids” – Kevin from Home Alone 😂 No matter how old I grow or how gruff and blue collar I get I’ll never get tired of legos, especially when it’s this beautiful castle that has a lot of significance to an architecture nerd like me
  • Headphones – For the gym seshes
  • Gym Clothes (Three Nails. Sportswear with a Purpose) – For the gym seshes
  • Thermos – My job means lots of hard work with some very early mornings, so coffee and something to keep it warm
  • Liturgy of the Hours – It’s such a beautiful way to pray, and having the books and getting off the screen during prayer is very nice to do (Mom note: I suggested waiting for the revised set which should be released in 2027)

Twinkle Toes’ Picks – Age 22

  • Fit Bit Charge 6 – Being able to track my steps and sleep each day has been amazing! It helps me know when I need to get moving – especially if I’ve been sitting at my computer working for too long. Keeping the goal of 10,000 steps a day is challenging! But it’s good to keep a record of just how much I’ve moved/when I could work more on it. Another feature I love is the notification: instead of picking up my phone every time I get a text, I can just glance at my watch to see if it’s important, work-related, or something I can respond to later. Perfect for anyone who wants to stay active, organized, and a little more present.
  • Ugg Slippers (Mom note: She has knock-offs from Walmart) – My forever go-to when I want cozy. These are the softest, warmest slippers I’ve ever had. Perfect for anyone who loves comfort with a touch of luxe.
  • Catholic Jewelry – They are just meaningful, simple pieces you can wear daily as a gentle reminder of your faith. Whether it’s a saint necklace, chaplet bracelet, or any sort of Catholic earrings, Catholic jewelry really does make such a thoughtful gift.  Love this Opal Cross Necklace and this Petite Miraculous Medal & Crucifix Necklace.
  • Warmie – A friend gifted this to me for my birthday this year, and my inner child was thrilled! It’s a weighted plush that turns into a heat pack when microwaved, and the real lavender scent is so calming. Perfect for headaches, stress, or cramps. Check out all the options here.
  • Star of Bethlehem Rosary – I’ve learned to love the rosary so much this last year especially after reading Champions of the Rosary (listed in last year’s gift guide). This rosary has gone with me everywhere this year. Whether it’s on a trip, at church, or at work, there’s so much peace and comfort with having a rosary with you and the ability to say it as a gift to Our Lady. West Coast Catholic does an amazing job with making a rosary that is simple yet so elegant.
  • Salt and Light by Sami Perfume – For anyone who’s sensitive to fragrance (or have a family member who is) these perfumes are perfect! I don’t even own one yet, but after hearing about this company and smelling them myself, I love them. While searching for a perfume that doesn’t bother my mom (she’s extremely senstive), I kept hearing sooo many praises about Salt and Light by Sami. Her focus is to give toxic free options for perfumes, colognes, and candles which made for an amazing clean-beauty option. A sweet friend of mine let me try hers one day to try out and it smelled wonderful. It was soft, clean, and not overpowered at all. It also seemed to not to bother my mom which was a WIN.  (Save 10% with coupon code SHOWEROFROSES)
  • Clothes of any sort – You can never go wrong with giving girls a piece of clothing. I really have loved an American Eagle Sweater that was given to me last Christmas.
  • Paddle Board – I bought myself a paddle board earlier this summer have loved every moment with it. It’s such.a fun way to enjoy the water, stay active, and get outdoors. I love also bringing my JBL speaker (also on last year’s gift guide) too out with me when I paddle board since it’s waterproof!
  • The Last Bookshop in London – My sister, mom, and I have been doing a 52-book reading challenge this year (which I’m behind on so this month will be mostly reading when I’m not working/wedding planning haha) so we have read a lot of books this year! The Last Bookshop in London has been one of my absolute favorites this year. It’s a heartfelt historical novel full of courage, hope, and the magic of books. If you love World War II historical fictions with a hint of romance. This book is perfect.
  • BONUS: A Catholic’s Guide to Finding the Perfect Spouse with 101 Simple Questions – Such an amazing book to go through, whether you’re in a relationship or not. My fiancé and I went through this book while we were dating to ensure that we agreed on all the important points. If we didn’t, it was a good opportunity to discuss why we had different opinions. It has questions for every aspect that can be affected by marriage. What is marriage? What is the role of the husband and wife? What do you think of spankings? What do you think of Novus Ordo, SSPX, FSSP? Etc. It’s also very important even while your single to go through these questions to know what YOUR opinions are because I’ll be honest, some of the questions in there, I had never thought about. I also had a married friend ask me to send her a copy so that she and her husband could go through it for fun. All around, a must read.

Chiquita’s Picks – Age 20

  • Golden Nectar Nest Perfume (or the sample variety package) – 10/10, would recommend! My big brother gifted me the sample package last Christmas and I ended up LOVING this perfume specifically! But since everyone has their own preferences and tastes, the sample package is a great way to try some scents out and see what speaks to you. 🙂
  • Reading Journal (with aesthetic markers!) – My reading journal is my whole personality 😭😭 this was another gift from last Christmas and it’s perfect for either an avid reader or someone looking to read more! I love the layout, and am on track to fill it out by the end of the year… sooo it seems like I’ll be needing another one soon… *cough* *cough* 👀  BBy the way. aesthetic markers to go with are a must!! 🤌🤌 I use the Zebra pastel markers for both homework and my reading journal.
  • Green Corduroy American Eagle Pants – I wear these all the time! They are super cute and I absolutely love the color!! It’s hard to find good pants that are both stylish and comfortable while still being modest, but these are great! 🌟🌟🌟
  • Make Up Bag – Great quality and lots of space!! It’s where I keep all my makeup stuff and nail supplies/polishes 🙂
  • Travel Set (Carry-On and Mini Weekender in Olive from Beis, or there are these that look similar and less expensive) – I can fit so much clothes in these bad boys 😎 never has traveling been easier nor more stylish 💅✨ they also match the corduroy pants quite nicely indeed 😁
  • Birkenstocks – Great shoes. Would recommend. … 👍  (I tried to find a Birkenstock emoji… I couldn’t 😞)
  • Oversized Beach Towel – An item so vital, thou’d sooner forget thy trousers than leave it behind on thy jaunts seashore bound!
  • Ukelele (and Macrame hangar) – I couldn’t bring my ukelele with me to school this last semester and never had I had a more joyless, unmusical experience in my life!! Just kidding… that’s a gross exaggeration… but anyways, I miss it and it would be a great Christmas present!!
  • Hallow Prayer App ⁃ Yeah so… if you are an obsessive reader of my mom’s blog, you’d know that last year I promised Mom a PowerPoint presentation as a way to show how Hallow benefits our family and how the Hallow Family Subscription is a prudent and wise investment… you would also know that I have not yet done that… BUT THE POINT STILL STANDS!! Hallow is a GREAT way to incorporate prayer into your and your family’s day to day life!! 10/10! 🌟🌟🌟 (They are currently offering a free three month trial.)

Scout’s Picks – Age 18

  • Compass Quest Wooden AirPod Case – I was so excited when Mom bought this for me! Protects my AirPods while looking fresh at the same time. All my friends like it; would highly recommend.
  • LEGO The Shire – “There is nothing like looking, if you want to find something.” – J.R.R. Tolkien … But I’ll make the search easier for all of you by recommending this peak Lego set 😉
  • Dulia Saints Hats – I don’t wear any other hats besides these, so I would highly recommend! Big favorites of mine.
  • Philips Norelco Electric Razor – This baddie changed my life! Shaves smoothly without cutting your face up, so better for your skin. Simple to use, quick to shave, easy to clean (it comes with some handy little cleaning pods), and the battery lasts a long time and only takes a little while to charge. Would highly recommend.
  • Tolkien Illustrated Classics: The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion – These are illustrated with Tolkien’s own drawings, sketches, maps, and artwork. I love the feel of these books and they look sensational on the bookshelf 🤌🤌
  • Stuff Every College Student Should Know – Every college student should know this stuff so if you have a college student this stuff is something you should get for your college student to know this stuff 🤪
  • Ozark Trail Men’s Puffer Slippers (last year’s stylesimilar to these or these) – I wear these EVERYWHERE (except the gym/fieldhouse, the icy streets of Bismarck, and the shower, tehe). So comfy, so cozy, would recommend 😮‍💨
  • St. Michael Leather Bracelet – I love my Saint Michael wristband. I gotta say, it’s a good conversation starter, because I always end up debating with people (who haven’t seen me wear it before) about whether it’s a wristband, bracelet, or wrist belt. Some people have thought it was a watch strap/band 😂 But I love it, I wear it almost everywhere.
  • JBL Speaker (lots of options here) – Always smart to have a speaker handy when you get the tingle to turn on some tunes 🔊

Rose’s Picks – Age 15

  • Mary Queen of Heaven Clay Earrings – These Mary earrings! Like umm SO cute! I love them cuz they’re holy and super stylish. They definitely make any outfit 💯
  • Little Women: Deluxe Painted Edition – I am so in love with this book! Also, the style of painted edition books!!! They’re just too adorable! 😍  I gave one of my friends the Frankenstein edition for her birthday, and she loved it (at least  that’s what I heard at least)! Mom got me this one for St. Nicholas Day…oh I mean St Nick gave me this 😉 I didn’t have my own copy of Little Women before, I’m so excited to read it again. Plus, it’s just the cutest on the bookshelf!
  • Kitsch Heatless Hair Curlers – My hair is literally the thinnest ever, and I’ve never been able to really curl it (curling irons just don’t work for some reason 🧐). I had pretty much given up hope… until my mom found these heatless hair curlers! 🥳 There are a lot of options out there, but I’ve found that this one works best for me. Now I can actually switch up my hair style! 😊
  • Rose in Bloom Wax Seal Stamp Kit with Medieval Initial Seal and Wine Red Wax – This letter seal set is actually so nice! I write letters to a lot of my friends (yes, I am old fashioned lol), but it’s always so fun to receive a letter in the mail from someone. These seals make a letter soo much more aesthetic 😍
  • Scrapbook Photo Album 10×10 and Paint Pens – Ok ok sooo! I started scrapbooking for the first time, and it has officially become my new favorite thing! I love flipping through the pages and seeing all the things we did and fun memories from the year. It feels so much more meaningful than looking at pics on your phone! 📱<📔
  • AirPods Pro 2 (She purchased these herself with some of her summer job earnings.) – I literally use these AirPods all the time. I used them a lot on those early bus rides for golf tournaments. You’d never think (well maybe you would lol, but I sure didn’t lol) that buses are soo loud! There’s basically no hope of falling back asleep at 4 a.m. I’m so thankful these are noise cancelling! 😴  They’re also amazing when you wanna focus 💯
  • Antique St. Therese Gemstone Rosary – St. Therese is probably my favorite saint (is it bad to have favorites? 🤔), and this rosary is so beautiful 🌹 I love that each Our Father bead has a medal and a rose bead, it makes it feel so special ❤️
  • Karaoke Machine – Ok, I literally sing ALL the time! My fam is probably so sick of hearing me all day lol. I don’t know… singing just makes me happy 😊 One of my friends had a birthday party and we did karaoke  🎤  and ever since then I have been wanting to get one like this… 👀 👀
  • Kiss imPRESS Holiday Press On Nails – So I am sooo bad at painting my nails. Trust me… it’s not pretty 😂  But with these press-on nails (I’m not a huge fan of the glue-on ones), you can have your nails done in no time. And there are so many different options, you can easily find the perfect style for you! 💅 😊

Favorite Wooden Toys

This list doesn’t change much from year to year but links are updated where necessary:

  • Fagus Wooden Trucks and Vehicles  – German crafted and made of solid Beechwood. We have been collecting for awhile and have the Limited Edition Red Fire Engine, Jeep, Snow Plow add on, Container Tipper Truck, Front End Loader, Conveyor Belt, and the Excavator, Tractors and Trailers. My little girls love them even more than their older brother did when they were younger! Look for them in the US at The Wooden Wagon and Nova Natural. We don’t have the brand new limited edition tractor but love it! 😍
  • Grimms Spiel und Holz Wooden Toys and Gluckskafer Wooden Building Blocks – Grimm’s Counting Rainbow (similar to this) with Grimm’s Natural Semicircles Building Sets is a favorite. Pictured here is the Gluckskafer Wooden Building Blocks Church with Tray.
  • Ostheimer Toys – Collectible hand carved figures made in Germany and finished with non-toxic stains and finished with natural oils. Collections include: Family Figures, Fairy Tale Characters, Farm Animals, Woodland Animals, Zoo Animals, and landscape pieces, such as Trees, Fences, Ponds, Grass and much more!  We have been collecting these for years now. They have gotten hard to come by the past couple years (frequently out of stock everywhere in the US) and have really increased in price, but we still love them.  You can find them in the US at the same stores as the Fagus Vehicles above. (Here are lookalikes from an Etsy shop in the US) **This year the cute new Koalas will be tucked in a little girls stocking! I was happy to see she had also mentioned them in her letter to Baby Jesus and St. Nick too. Perfect!
  • (NEW) Mini Catholic Kitchen from Shining Light Dolls – Excited to gift these to our little girls this year! They already received the St. Lucia Buns from St. Nicholas with the feast of St. Lucy coming up! (Save an extra 10% with coupon code SHOWEROFROSESBLOG
  • Lincoln Logs – So classic! So fun for the whole family.
  • Grapat Sorting Toys – I bought a couple of these for Easter Baskets and planning to add more in this year’s stockings and next year’s Easter Baskets. Our little girls love them!  They are also great for using along with their Fagus Dump Truck, Trailers and Conveyor Belt.
  • Interlocking Blocks – I keep a basket of these (2 or 3 sets of 92) in a basket in our living room and they are played with daily! I’ve blogged more about these here.
  • Wooden Mass Kit and Baptism Set from Shining Light DollsSave an extra 10% with coupon code SHOWEROFROSESBLOG
  • Musical Llama Wooden Instrument – My babies are now 6 and 8 but this still gets played with!

Additional favorites that aren’t currently pictured this year:

Baby Gifts

A few ideas with some help from one of my baby sisters – who just had her 4th in 4 years! 😅

Jessica’s Picks – Gifts for Women

  • Saint Polaroids and Ora Pro Nobis Vintage Wooden Clipboard from January Jane Shop – I recently purchase the Wooden Clipboard to use with my collection of Saint Polaroids and love it! Save 10% with coupon code: LXZ-NTU27UL (or clicking here)
  • Feast Faith Flourish: Holistic Wellness in Light of Eternity (or from Amazon here)
  • Well Read Mom Membership – “Do You Offer Gift Memberships?” Yes, we would love to help you gift a membership to someone! You can purchase a gift membership through our store. Just include her name and full contact information in the note section, and we will activate her membership. We will send her an email letting her know she has been enrolled in Well-Read Mom.
  • The Codebreakers Series by Roseanna White – I probably should have read Shadows Over England first (also excellent!). A good friend of mine introduced me to this author and I love her books!
  • Roses Blooming Tea Towels from January Jane Shop – Couldn’t resist ordering a set of these when they were recently released to add to my collection. So pretty! Save 10% with coupon code: LXZ-NTU27UL (or clicking here)
  • Stanley All Day Madeleine Backpack – My sister-in-law had this on our trip to Kauai (my brother took a few of the girls and I as my “Christmas bonus” – best Christmas gift ever!) last January and I loved it so I purchased it during a great sale. We use it for packing our co-op lunch each week.
  • Bonavita Pour Over Coffee Maker – Finally got rid of my Keurig (really hated using all that plastic and also wondering what it was doing to my health- I have enough autoimmune issues already!) and this was the replacement. I love it! … However, if you do use a Keurig, these All Saints Coffee Pods are fun to try out all the flavors. I’ve switched to Whole Bean now. Padre Pio Espresso Roast is my fave but the St. Therese roast is perfect if you are looking for something light and Sleeping St. Joseph for decaf!
  • Birkenstocks – I never owned a pair of Birkenstocks until after my leg surgeries, but they have been the best shoes as I continue recovering. I lived in my Black Arizona Big Buckles over the past couple summers and now my favorites are my Shearling Lined Buckleys I wear whenever I am home (huge change for “no shoes in the house!” me) for the extra support. They are definitely helping, along with continuing PT, to avoid the next two surgeries (opposite leg) my doctor is recommending…
  • Annie Ruth Lip Butter – I discovered this at a “Favorite Things” party this fall and it quickly became one of my favorite things. Made without color dyes, synthetic preservatives, grains, soy, alcohol or water… It’s amazing! I have the Peppermint and want to order to Coffee.

Gifts for Men

Note: Sean sent me a few of these links, but the rest are gifts my daughter and I picked out for him!

Christmas Puzzles

Every Advent we set up a card table and the puzzles come out! This year we put together two 1000 piece puzzles (The Annunciation and The Visitation) the first couple days of Advent, while we still had Thanksgiving company. Then it was back to school to finish the semester strong (and catch up on chores!) but our third puzzle was opened today, after St. Nick left us A Dala Winter! I suspect it will be finished before the end of the weekend. I watch for sales and stock up when I find them. Here are some of the puzzles we added to our collection this year and last year that haven’t made it onto the blog yet:

The Word Within Book Review + Giveaway

In their book The Word Within: The Ark of the Covenant and Mary, Maura McKeegan and Scott Hahn once again poignantly deliver God’s message of hope for the world.

We are thoughtfully reminded that, just as in Old Testament times, when God placed the Ark with the Word of God within it, as a centerpiece of His promise to His believers; God today likewise wants us to remember that He is still in our midst, first in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary and now upon our altars as a promise of mercy and hope.

Children will once again find a memorable lesson, both in the appropriate text for children and the corresponding illustrations, that God’s Promise is still in their midst.

Note: This review was written by Sean. He and I have reviewed a number of the other books in this series over the year. It’s one of my absolute favorites between the biblical typology and the beautiful illustrations. I was very excited to hear the latest addition to the series had just been published! I also included a few additional pictures from this book in this year’s Christmas Books for the Feast of St. Nicholas.

Here are the links to past reviews on other books in the series:

The End of the Fiery Sword: Adam & Eve and Jesus & Mary

Into the Sea, Out of the Tomb: Jonah and Jesus

Building the Way to Heaven: The Tower of Babel and Pentecost

Beloved Son: Joseph and Jesus

St. Lucia Buns & Swedish Glögg Wooden Play Food

The Mini Catholic Kitchen (specifically this St. Lucia Buns (Lussekatter) & Swedish Glögg Wooden Play Food Set) is my FAVORITE Shining Light Dolls new toy release since their Double-sided Advent to Christmas Wooden Wreath Set. It is SO darling!

I could hardly wait to give it to the girls but thankfully St. Nicholas dropped it off this weekend. 😉

As soon as the girls opened the box they were so excited. I grabbed my camera to snap a few photos as they started serving St. Lucia buns and pouring glögg for each other and for me too! Here are a few adorable moments I managed to capture…

St. Lucia, teach us to carry Christ’s light

— warm as glögg, bright as lussekatter —

to everyone we meet.

A Visit from Saint Nicholas

Celebrating St. Nicholas’s feast day has always been a favorite tradition in our home. The kids write their letters to St. Nicholas (and Baby Jesus! – this year both the little girls wrote they are especially praying for Uncle Scott’s soul ❤️) . They tuck their letters into their slippers and wake up to find them replaced with treats – new books, candy coins, gold coins, and a few fun surprises. It’s a simple tradition but such a special one which they always look forward to each Advent.

This year we were down to just five at home, and that number is probably going to drop again next year, but it’s so heartwarming to see how our adult children continue to celebrate this special feast. Our family text string was filled with pictures from a beautiful Rorate Mass at Thomas Aquinas College down in California 😍 , crazy young men sledding in North Dakota 😳, and four pairs of men’s shoes (second son and two friends visiting our oldest right now) in front of a TV screen fire in a small apartment in Arizona filled with cans of Guinness, bananas and chocolate coins. 😂

I hope you all had a blessed feast day however you celebrated!

O good St. Nicholas, you who are the joy of the children, put in my heart the spirit of childhood, which the Gospel speaks, and teach me to seed happiness around me.

You, whose feast prepares us for Christmas, open my faith to the mystery of God-made man. You, good bishop and shepherd, help me to find my place in the Church and inspire the Church to be faithful to the Gospel.

O good Saint Nicholas, patron of children, sailors, and the helpless, watch over those who pray to Jesus, your Lord and theirs, as well as over those who humble themselves before you.

Links to this year’s new books can be found here, this year’s new puzzle here, and the darling St. Lucia Buns!

The little girls also discovered a couple Christmas sweaters and place settings in the kitchen near some more fun seasonal donuts from Krispy Kreme. (We’ve started saving the Cherry Cheese Candy Cane Coffee Cake for Christmas when more of the kids are home.)

Bring us all in reverence to the Holy Child of Bethlehem, where true joy and peace are found. Amen.

St. Nicholas Day in the Morning… Last year!

As I was working on uploading pictures from this year’s feast of St. Nicholas, I realized I never finished posting last year’s pictures from St Nicholas Day in the Morning…. adding them now to this digital family scrapbook of ours. ❤️

You can find links to all the books they received this year (2024) here. They also all received new slippers, a new puzzle, and some other little surprises. You can also find our free printable letter to Baby Jesus here.

Welcome, friend! St. Nicholas, welcome!
Bring no rod for us to-night!
While our voices bid thee welcome,
Every heart with joy is light.

Tell us every fault and failing;
We will bear thy keenest railing
So we sing, so we sing:
Thou shalt tell us everything!

Welcome, friend! St. Nicholas, welcome!
     Welcome to this merry band!
Happy children greet thee, welcome!
Thou art gladdening all the land.

We used to make Cherry Cheese Candy Cane Coffee Cakes for St. Nicholas Day – now those are saved for when more of the kids are home for Christmas and have been replaced with Christmas themed Krispy Kreme Donuts! Easy for me and fun for them!

Fill each empty hand and basket;
‘Tis thy little ones who ask it.
So we sing, so we sing:
Thou wilt bring us everything!”

Treats from St. Nicholas

After celebrating the feast of St. Nicholas every year growing up, our older kids now love playing “St. Nicholas” on the eve of St. Nicholas Day. Even at Thanksgiving this year, our oldest son and our college son both asked for bags of chocolate coins to take back with them so they could surprise their friends.

Last year a few of them put together fun little treat bags—just chocolate coins and cuties—and secretly dropped them on friends’ and families’ porches. It ended up being such a fun and easy way to spread a little love just like St. Nicholas!

Our oldest daughter said her favorite part was how “it’s so fun when friends start sending pictures and trying to figure out who did it!” (Even though a couple Ring cameras totally gave them away.) She also added that you should “make sure the families you stop by don’t have dogs… haha!” (… and I told them to make sure they didn’t go anywhere they’d get shot!)

St. Nicholas Treat Bags

Last year our daughter wrote up a “letter from St. Nicholas.” I formatted it, added a picture, and printed them on cardstock, to tuck inside each bag. They’re available for you to download for free here if you’d like to use them too.

Dear Friend,

A little gift is left here for you,
With prayers that are constant
and blessings anew.
An orange for sweetness,
coins of chocolate gold,
Reminders of love
and stories of old.

Through acts of kindness
and love’s holy light,
We honor the Savior
born on Christmas night.
Keep your eyes fixed on heaven,
where true joy resides,
And know that the saints
walk close by your side.

In Christ,
— Your Servant, St. Nicholas

Our 2025 Advent Book Basket and Printable Labels

I’m finally getting around to posting our 2025 Advent Book Basket and Printable Labels! We have had a lot happening lately and I am hoping to share a couple updates soon. I’m so sorry to those who have been waiting for these… At least they will now be in the archives for the next time Advent begins on November 30th!

I do have another giveaway for you, so be sure to scroll to the bottom of this post to enter. The winners of this year’s St. Nicholas Giveaway were just announced as well!

Annual Advent Book Basket

The Advent Season in our home includes so many lovely traditions that have slowly grown over the years including our Advent Wreath, Advent Calendars and Jesse Tree, but one of our favorites is counting down the days with our annual Advent Book Basket. Over the years, we’ve built an incredible home library, including many books in Christmas Mosaic and from our children’s ever-growing list of favorite Christmas picture books. Each year, we add new treasures, especially on the feast of St. Nicholas. (Check out this year’s St. Nick books here!)

The length of Advent ranges from 22 to 28 days, beginning on the Sunday closest to the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle (November 30th) and embracing four Sundays. The first day of Advent can fall as early as November 27th to as late as December 3rd. This year Advent begins on Sunday, November 30th.

I love mixing old favorites with new finds as I decide which books to wrap up each year for our Advent Book Basket. The kids get just as excited as I do, especially when they unwrap their favorites or discover a carefully chosen addition!

This year I asked my husband and our 15 year old to pick out 10 books each from the Christmas bookshelves upstairs for me. I then added three new books (Mr. Willowby’s Head Over Heals Christmas, A Christmas Wish for Little Dala Horse and The Shepherd’s Coat which is also available here) and a couple of my favorites (Christmas in Heaven and The Donkey’s Dream) to bring the total to 25 to wrap up this year.

Note: The Shepherd’s Coat is Also available directly from Word on Fire – Right now there is a 20% off sale on all books and merchandise in their online store through January. If you spend $50, you will also receive a free copy of The Shepherd’s Coat!

Here’s what made the cut for this year’s Advent Book Basket:

To use all season: All About Advent & Christmas: Sharing the Seasons of Hope & Wonder with Children

Years ago, I traded our original purple and pink wrapping paper for brown paper decorated with reusable purple and pink ribbons (saved annually). I occasionally repurpose brown paper bags or opt for a roll of brown craft paper from the craft store, pairing it with the ribbon and homemade labels.

We’ll unwrap and read one book each night during Advent, following our family rosary. The rest of our book collection will be placed in additional baskets, ready to be enjoyed throughout the seasons of Advent and Christmas.

If you’d like to use my little labels too, you can download my Advent Book Basket Labels for 2025 over at Dropbox.

(Here it the link to the original ones I made back in 2014 that work again this year – these won’t work with Avery labels)

Once again, I also made it to where they could be printed on Avery 5294 High Visibility Round Labels if you’d rather not have to cut them out. Sadly my printer has been struggling lately, as you can see in the picture, despite new ink cartridges… I think I need to take a pink marker to my pink candles to darken them a bit.

Christmas Books for the Feast of St. Nicholas

Thanksgiving came up so fast!!! Family is starting to trickle in from five different states (lots of prayers for all the travelers this week!) and everything is going to get really busy really fast… I’m trying to carve out a little time to finally finish up this post and share our new Christmas Books for this year!

I’m also still hoping to find time to pull together our Advent Book Basket… but in the meantime, and in case I don’t get it posted, for those waiting for the labels, the 2014 labels work again this year! I just transferred them from their old Scribd location to Dropbox here.

Celebrating St. Nicholas Day

On the morning of December 6th, our children wake up to discover their letters to the Holy Child and St. Nicholas have disappeared, replaced with treats in their slippers. New Christmas Books, sometimes new slipper or shoes (when needed) oranges, chocolate gold coins, candy canes, and a note from St. Nicholas himself.

Even though our older kids are teens and young adults now, they still look forward to the new Christmas books each year. After 25 years our collection is huge, yet we always manage to find more beautiful books to add!

Below you will find the list of new Christmas books I picked out for this year.

Note: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Additional affiliate links included to TAN BooksIgnatius PressSophia Institute Press and Holy Heroes as well.

For the Family

Christmas Around the Fire from Tan Books

“… Included within are entries from legendary novelists and poets such as Leo Tolstoy, G. K. Chesterton, Charles Dickens, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Willa Cather, and more. Also included are profound thoughts from great religious figures such as Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Pope Saint John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI…”

Also available from Amazon here.

For Our Young Adults

Advent & Christmas with the Church Fathers

Devotion to Our Lord in the Womb

During a recent sale at TAN Books I ended up ordering multiple copies of these two NEW releases books to give to all of our older children this Advent. Advent & Christmas with the Church Fathers: A Seven-Week Retreat on the Mystery and the Meaning of the Incarnation for the boys and Devotion to Our Lord in the Womb: The Divine Nine Months for our girls.

These beautiful books are also available from Amazon here and here.

Rose – 15

Little Women: Deluxe Painted Edition

Experience Louisa May Alcott’s beloved coming-of-age classic like never before with this exclusive deluxe edition of Little Women, featuring enchanting cover art by artist Laci Fowler.

The Deluxe Painted Editions are so pretty! Rose had been admiring the couple copies I’ve bought in the past (Persuasion for book club and Winnie the Pooh for our oldest son last Christmas) and she recently purchased Frankenstein for a friend’s birthday. She’ll be getting Little Women soon.

Bud – 13

Little Christmas Carol: The Illustrated Edition

“Enjoy Charles Dickens’ beloved masterpiece, freshly imagined within an enchanting woodland realm.”

I tried purchasing this last year and it sold out before I had a chance to get a copy.

Grace – 8

The Road to Bethlehem

(Also available directly from Sophia Institute Press)

The Road to Bethlehem is a heartwarming journey of faith, friendship, and the joyous mystery of the Incarnation — told from the perspective of animals who long to be near the Christ Child.

We have had the old edition of this book since our older kids were little, purchased it nearly 20 years ago, but it’s out of print now. This lovely new edition will be given to our animal loving 8-year-old this year!

Joy – 6

The Word Within: The Ark of the Covenant and Mary

(The BRAND NEW addition to the Old and New Series! Also available directly from St. Paul Center – book review post coming soon!)

Have you heard of the Ark of the Covenant? Do you know about Mary, too?
One is from the Old Testament, One is from the New.
Both stories are the Word of God, Their messages are true;
But when you see them side by side, A hidden part comes through.

“In The Word Within, the sixth book in the Old and New series, authors Maura Roan McKeegan and Scott Hahn tell the story of God’s plan of salvation for his people. Just as the Ark of the Covenant was the resting place for God’s Word, written in stone, the Blessed Virgin Mary carried God’s Word, Jesus Christ, within her womb. Together, their stories reveal the amazing gift of God’s mercy. See biblical typology—the Old Testament people, symbols, and events that foreshadow the New Testament—come to life in The Word Within.

For Mom 🙂

Christmas at Sugar Plum Manor

The Nutcracker and Edwardian-Era England combine to weave a magical tale of love and friendship at Christmastime.

This one is for me! I’ve really enjoyed quite a few of Roseanna White’s books this year (Shadows Over England series and The Codebreakers Series) and am looking forward to reading this on this Christmas.

More New Books for this year’s Advent Book Basket

The Shepherd’s Coat

(Also available directly from Word on Fire – Right now there is a 20% off sale on all books and merchandise in their online store through January. If you spend $50, you will also receive a free copy of The Shepherd’s Coat.)

Benji the shepherd boy’s dearest wish is to find the Baby Jesus and give him his most prized possession: a sheepskin coat. What will he do when he discovers a lost little boy trembling in the cold? Should he give the coat away to someone who desperately needs it or keep it in case he finds the Christ child? This story, beautifully told by beloved spiritual writer Caryll Houselander, reveals deep spiritual truths through an encounter with Jesus and a reminder that what we do for the least of these, we do for him. With breathtaking illustrations by Jess Mason, this stunning book will be a favorite Christmas story for families to enjoy again and again.”

A Christmas Wish for Little Dala Horse: A Saint Lucia Celebration

“Little Dala Horse knows nothing of Juletide or of love―he’s just been newly carved as a Christmas gift. He’s eager to learn about the Saint Lucia girl with a crown of glowing candles, the festive star boys, and the cute pepparkakor children. Little Dala Horse jumps into a boy’s pocket and experiences the Saint Lucia pageant for the first time. At first Little Dala is shy and hides, but when a small gingerbread girl is scared to go on stage for her dance, Little Dala finds courage to help her overcome her fear.”

Mr. Willowby’s Head Over Heels Christmas

The beloved classic Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree gets a sequel!
Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree has been a holiday favorite since 1963. Now, its generations of fans can read a new Mr. Willowby story, thanks to the discovery of a long lost manuscript and sketches by the creator Robert Barry, lovingly brought to life in a thrilling new picture book.
On Christmas Eve, Mr. Willowby finds himself in a predicament when his Christmas tree delivery gets stuck in a snowdrift. But hope arrives in the form of Barnaby Bear and his woodland friends, who embark on a thrilling mountainside adventure to bring the perfect tree to Mr. Willowby’s parlor. Their journey is filled with laughter, surprises, and the true magic of Christmas, making this story a perfect addition to any holiday collection.”

“All God’s Creatures Got a Place in the Choir” Birthday Party

Back in 2017, our youngest son requested an “All God’s Creatures Got a Place in the Choir” Birthday Party for his 6th birthday, inspired by his absolute favorite song at the time as sung by his all time favorite band, Celtic Thunder. All our kids had “their part” of the song that they had to sing, and they still remember which guy from Celtic Thunder was “their guy!”

I had just gotten home the day before his birthday from a trip to California for my Grandpa Murphy’s funeral. His funeral actually fell on our daughter’s 8th birthday, so this ended up being a double birthday celebration once I made it home. (I’m splitting up the photos into two posts since she picked Little Red Riding Hood for her 10th birthday theme that year. I made two small 6″ cakes and pulled together some treats to go along with each of their themes, instead of one larger cake.)

All God’s Creatures Got a Place in the Choir Birthday

All God’s creatures got a place in the choir
Some sing low and some sing higher
Some sing out loud on the telephone wire
Some just clap their hands or paws, or anything they’ve got now

To make his cake I used three 6″ cakes with white frosting, black fondant for the music notes, and placed our Ostheimer Bremen Town Musicians on a small wooden circle on the top of the cake!
(Note: Unfortunately the Ostheimer toys have really increased in price in recent years.)

Listen to the top where the little bird sings
On the melodies and the high notes ringing
And the hoot owl cries over everything
And the blackbird disagrees

Singing in the nighttime, singing in the day
When little duck quacks and he’s on his way
And the otter hasn’t got much to say
And the porcupine talks to himself

Peanut Butter and Honey Sandwiches – Sandwich Sealer & Cutter

Dogs and the cats, they take up the middle
While the honeybee hums and the cricket fiddles
The donkey brays and the pony neighs
The old grey badger sighs

A Multitude of Fish Trail Mix

Listen to the bass, it’s the one on the bottom
Where the bullfrog croaks and the hippopotamus
Moans and groans with a big t’do
And the old cow just goes moo

Bear Paw Cookies
Chocolate Cookies with peanuts and upside down Hershey Kisses added immediately after baking.

It’s a simple song, a little song everywhere
By the ox and the fox and the grizzly bear
The dopey alligator and the the hawk above
The sly old weasel and the turtle dove

All God’s creatures got a place in the choir
Some sing low and some sing higher
Some sing out loud on the telephone wire
Some just clap their hands or paws, or anything they’ve got now

All God’s creatures got a place in the choir!

An Intimate Evening With Celtic Thunder

Flash forward to 2025… We finally took our now-teens to see Celtic Thunder last Friday night on October 24th!!! It was truly a dream come true for this guy. And, to quote our 15-year-old daughter from the family text string: “Guys! I’m so excited to finally see one of my first ever crushes! 😂” (Damian McGinty was a little younger back then!)

We had the cheapest seats in the back but the venue was small and we were on the riser section which allowed us to see right over all the heads in front of us! It was perfect and such a fun evening!

And YES! They sang A Place in the Choir. Like I said at the beginning of this post, all of our kids had their assigned “parts” of A Place in the Choir when they were little, and they still remember exactly which Celtic Thunder member was “their guy!”

Our 13-year-old always had to sing “the kid’s” parts (Damian McGinty) and our daughter was assigned to Paul Byrom’s parts, chosen, of course, by whichever older sibling was in charge of “assignments” back then. They knew all the dance moves too!

And the best surprise? Paul (who resigned from Celtic Thunder back in 2010) was actually back for An Intimate Evening With Celtic Thunder Tour this year!

Our kids are growing up so quickly, but I really love when we get these little glimpses of their childhoods all over again… So many wonderful memories, along with all the new ones being made!

You can find more of our past birthday celebrations here.

Advent Candles and More

With Advent beginning on November 30th, just days after Thanksgiving this year and coming up so very quickly, it’s time for my annual reminder to make a few preparations, before Thanksgiving hits, and order your Advent candles if you haven’t already! 🕯️

If you’re looking to order Advent candles for your wreath, there are some lovely options below! The dear nuns at The Cloister Shoppe have beautifully crafted candles ready to ship, and they tend to sell out quickly as the season draws near. You can also check out the 100% Beeswax Advent Candles from Forestville Candle Company, hand-poured by two talented college students.

Be sure to scroll to the bottom for another Wooden Advent to Christmas Wreath giveaway!

100% Beeswax Advent Candles from The Cloister Shoppe

For many years, our family has been ordering the exquisite 100% Beeswax hand-poured tapers created by the talented Dominican Nuns at The Cloister Shoppe. These candles have been the centerpiece of our Advent wreath, casting a warm and comforting glow as we gather for dinner each night throughout the Advent season. The craftsmanship and love put into each taper make these candles a cherished part of our yearly celebrations.

In these pictures, you can see Joseph and Mary making their journey down our Advent Path. Many years ago I decided to create a path down the center of our table for Advent, using our Jesse Tree ornaments for each day of the season. The first year was a simple countdown path made from doilies, but the following year, I incorporated our wooden Jesse Tree Ornaments from Jesse Tree Treasures.

More Favorites from The Cloister Shoppe

Each year, I make an effort to plan in advance and order additional candles to be blessed on Candlemas (February 2). This ensures that we have them ready for the new liturgical year and the upcoming Advent season. Here are some I have purchased over the years:

Click here to visit the Cloister Christmas Shoppe!

Advent Taper Candles from Forestville Candle Company

You can also find gorgeous 100% Beeswax Advent Candles—hand-poured in Lavender and Rose and Deep Violet and Rose by two talented Catholic college students, Abbey and Anna, over at Forestville Candle Company! 🌲

Abbey and Anna sent me a couple of sample sets last year, and we absolutely loved them! Their craftsmanship and attention to detail really shine through.

The Our Lady of Guadalupe Candle in the center is from Clear Creek Abbey. (Also available from Amazon.) While I’ve yet to bring myself to burn it, it adds a lovely touch to our Advent decorations.

This year we’ll be using another set of their lovely Deep Violet and Rose Advent candles.

While you are over there, be sure to check out their Saint Candles which would make great Christmas gifts! Pictured above is Adoring Our Eucharistic Lord with Carlo Acutis and A Light to Guide from Our Lady Star of the Sea. They have many others to choose from as well!

Book pictured above: All About Advent and Christmas: Sharing the Seasons of Hope and Wonder With Children (also available here at Amazon) originally included in my 2023 New Finds for Advent section of my annual gift guide. Highly recommend!

Handmade Advent Candles by the Clear Creek Monks

I also wanted to share these Advent Candle sets that are hand-dipped by the Monks of Clear Creek… but I wasn’t quick enough to finish this post and they have already sold out! You can sign up for a reminder if they end up restocking them.

Advent Candle Crafting for Children

Our children have also really enjoyed crafting their own candles using the 100% Beeswax Advent Candle Kit from Illuminated Ink.

This hands-on Advent project is a wonderful way for children to actively participate in preparing for the Advent season.

You can also order the Advent Candles kit from Holy Heroes along with An Advent Hope. They also carry All About Advent and Christmas if you’d like to get all three from one place!

Advent Wreaths Around Our Home

In our home, we like to set up two Advent wreaths during this special season.

The taper Advent Candles find their place in an Advent Wreath on our dining room table, where we light them each night during dinner, creating a warm and beautiful atmosphere.

Additionally, we have a larger wreath adorning the coffee table in our living room. This one is lit during our family rosary each evening, and we leave it aglow while unwrapping and reading from our cherished annual Advent Book Basket.

I still miss the pillar candles I used to buy from the Benedictine Monks when they were still making them. Currently, I opt for these 3×3 candles in purple and pink. (You can find more Advent Wreath-related posts here.)

There was one particularly ambitious year when I even hung our Advent Wreath like the Von Trapp family! 🕯️🎶

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure.
