Sew Many Booties {Sponsored Review & Giveaway}

Sew Many Booties offers unique, affordable and adorable home-sewn baby booties and toddler slippers in 4 sizes up to 24 months.

I first had the pleasure of meeting Angela through her blog and then at our home, along with her youngest daughter, when she traveled to attend the baby shower I was hosting for a mutual friend. She arrived with a beautiful bouquet of roses and a darling bouquet of baby clothes for Rose, who was my own little “bun in the oven” at the time! (Was that really over 4 years ago, Angela?) Anyways, it was such a joy to meet and visit with her in person! This past fall Angela sent me an email letting me know she had opened her Etsy shop and then sent the sweetest pair of booties as a gift, which I ended up giving Bud on the feast of St. Nicholas.
Bud is quickly outgrowing booties, and surprisingly we have our biggest gap between babies right now, but many of my dear friends have recently delivered new little ones (or will soon) and I have ordered “Sew Many” Booties to give as gifts.  I love how cozy these booties are and that they actually stay on the baby’s feet! Hopefully my friends will like them as much as I do!
I have been pairing the booties with a matching burp cloth and/or a baby board book when I give them as a gift, and Angela does offer Baby Bundles in her shop.

I had the above “Sweet Pea” set to give to Ranger’s Godmother at the shower last weekend, but ended up saving the booties for another baby and gave her a pink pair instead, along with the board books (which doubled as shower decorations), pink baby clothes, and a pink blanket.  Originally they didn’t know what she was having (they currently have 5 boys ages 18-11), but just before the shower she had an ultrasound and I just couldn’t bring myself to stick with the green after we were all surprised to hear that the baby is a GIRL!

My personal favorites for a brand new baby are the darling Baptism Infant Booties and, with a brother playing golf for OSU, I couldn’t resist the College Football Golf Booties which will be a gift for my next niece or nephew, whenever he or she arrives.

Sew Many Booties is currently offering
FREE DOMESTIC SHIPPING
to all my visitors here at Shower of Roses using code

And now for the giveaway!

What a week! I’m so glad it is finally Friday!  I have so much I had been hoping and planning to blog about – last week’s baby shower, a State-by-State post that keeps getting postponed, an update on how our curriculum choices have been working out this year along with the few changes we’ve made, an updated “schedule”, and a few other topics –  but our days have been filling up quickly leaving me very little computer time.  Wednesday we were in town all day for the required State testing all morning, four orthodontist appointments in the afternoon, and then a couple additional errands.

Snuggles had helped Bud get dressed and I didn’t realize until I was buckling him in his car seat that he was wearing a pair of his sister’s size 3 capris.  Whoops!  Our girls don’t wear pants very often and someone must have put them in his drawer.  Oh well.  I don’t think anyone noticed, though they were really short!

Captain is ahead of schedule and should be getting his braces off sometime this summer.  Two more of the children will need to start braces sometime within the next six months.  I guess they all inherited my teeth… Ranger will need full braces and Chiquita will need to start the first of (possibly) two phases. So thankful for dental insurance this year to help offset the cost!

We’ve been talking about getting a bunk bed for the little boys for awhile.  In fact when I had that smoke scare a couple weeks ago I had my brother take down the light fixture so I could rearrange the bookshelves to make room for the bed when “someday” arrived.  I told Snuggles that afternoon that I would work on selling some books we no longer need and save that money to buy him a bed.  That was on Monday.  On Tuesday I had a notice from Paypal that I had received an affiliate payment of $129.42 from All About Learning!  (All About Reading and All About Spelling are such excellent programs!  THANK YOU to all who purchased from my links! Snuggles thanks you too!) On Wednesday I had a phone call from a friend of my mom’s asking if we by any chance were looking for a bunk bed.   She was having lunch with a friend who had one to sell.  She was only asking $125 for the bunk bed (originally from Costco) and a like new Sealy twin mattress! The bed was only used occasionally by her grandchildren and she had recently converted the guest room into an office. What a blessing!  They even delivered it that afternoon!

As Sean and the boys were assembling the bunk bed we realized we needed a little hardware, so Sean and I turned the quick trip to town into a little date for the two of us.  After stopping at the hardware store and then JoAnn’s for a few birthday party supplies, we headed to a local Mexican restaurant and shared steak fajitas.  Yum!!

We’ve been trying to spend a little time together, just the two of us, each week and on St. Valentine’s Day a friend kept all the children after the party and skating while we went out to our favorite Asian restaurant.   We split a delicious order of Bulgogi (chopped steak sautéed with veggies and mushrooms, which came with tempura vegetables and rice) and a sushi roll of some sort, though I did have to fight the hockey game for Sean’s attention. 😉 (Hockey at the Sushi Bar on Valentine’s Day?)  Even though we split the meal, we still had leftovers for the boys!

Last Monday, on President’s Day we went to see the matinee showing of The Monuments Men (using $13 of a $25 Christmas gift card!) and then split an “Imperial Stout Burger with Pub Fries” on our way home.   We’ve found that splitting meals and just ordering water to drink makes these little dates much more affordable, which allows us to go out more often than in the past and not feel guilty for overspending. It is usually still plenty of food and has been such a treat!

Hauling wood from the wood pile to the house.
He does the same thing when he is washing dishes and stacking them in the drain board…

We’ve been having lots of steak, potatoes, and veggies lately!  We purchased a 1/2 beef in Nov 2012 and I finally ran out of ground beef this past November.  Since then I have been forcing myself to learn how to cook all the random packages of steak and roasts that had been hiding in the back of the freezer, before picking up this year’s order.
Snuggles was so excited when I mentioned that I had “bought 1/2 of a cow” and very disappointed when he found out that our 1/2 was not going to be alive.  It took the older boys a little while to convince him that cow=hamburger, though there was no denying it when we picked it up from the butcher on Wednesday afternoon.

— 6 —

After spending most of this month’s grocery budget on the cow and restocking the freezer, our Costco rebate checks came at a perfect time.  My total at Costco yesterday afternoon, after this year’s rebates, was only $40.27!  As I said on Instagram, gone are the days of buying something fun with those checks, especially with teen/preteen boys in the house!

And, apparently, I stack groceries like Sean stacks wood! 😉
(I had already removed another box and 5 dozen eggs before letting go to snap the picture.)

— 7 —

We were up at 4:30 this morning, bathing a sick little boy and keeping a bucket nearby. Poor baby!
I think this is the first time he has had a stomach virus (other than the usual infant spitting up, etc) and he just doesn’t understand what is going on.

This afternoon it was time for yet another bath and another load of laundry…  So thankful for the Cold and Flu Aromatherapy Bubble Bath (LOVE this stuff) that finally put a smile back on his face, and that so far he is the only one that is sick.

Baby Shower Bonus:

Rascal’s Godmother is due next month and we had a baby shower for her last weekend!  I helped with a few of the decorations, a couple games, and one of the appetizers. Thankfully I had some help sorting all those M&M’s!   It all turned out so cute and colorful!
Today is the last day to enter the Jesse Tree Treasures giveaway.  Be sure to check back sometime this weekend for the next giveaway sponsored by Sew Many Booties!

Comment Policy

One of my favorite things about Shower of Roses is hearing from my visitors in the comment box. Living in a rural area and raising a large family without much support for Catholics and Home Education is challenging. I’m so grateful for the friendships, prayers and support I have been blessed with through blogging.

However, the comment box has gotten a little out of control the last couple years, which has resulted in me trying to find different ways to manage the comments that come through, including requiring word verification at times, and ultimately moderating each and every comment, most of which are spam, and which ends up taking more time than I have to spend on the computer.

It is time to make a few changes, starting with installing a new commenting system for all new posts. Hopefully this will make leaving comments easier for all my visitors and also cut back on the time it takes me to moderate comments, leaving me with more time to spend with my family and still continue blogging.

I’ve listed some clear guidelines below for what is allowed, and more importantly what isn’t allowed in the comment box here at Shower of Roses:  (Note: Please read the section titled “No Personal Attack Comments Permitted” and remember that this is my family and a little glimpse at our lives that I am sharing here and not a generic “resource website.”)

Comment Form Guidelines: The comment form must be filled in with a proper or legitimate sounding name and URL. Comments using keywords, spam or splog-like URLs, or suspicious information in the comment form will be edited or deleted.

Email Privacy: Email addresses are required for commenting, and they are not published on the blog, nor shared. They may be used by the blog owner to privately contact the commenter.

Commenter Privacy and Protection: All email, snail mail, phone numbers, and any private and personal information posted in any comment will be deleted as soon as possible to protect the privacy of the commenter. To prevent such editing, never share this private information within the blog comment.

No Personal Attack Comments Permitted: This blog is a digital scrapbook for our family. As much as I love and enjoy sharing what we have been up to here at Shower of Roses, I do not welcome debates or attacks on me, my family, or my faith in my comment box. I do not claim to be an expert on any topic I blog about, nor do I have any sort of authority in the Church. I am just another Catholic mother doing my best to raise the children God has blessed us with and entrusted to our care. Even though many visit this blog looking for ideas to incorporate in their own homes, just because I post something doesn’t mean it is the best option, or that it is even a good idea. My children look back and read through the posts and comments and I do not want them reading comments left (almost always anonymously) about what is wrong with the craft they lovingly created, or how any particular book, activity, our Holy Father the Pope, or even canonized saint(!) that I blog about isn’t “Catholic” enough. The First Amendment gives you the right to express your opinions on your blog not mine. In short, any comment that I do not want my children to read will not be published.

Blog Nicknames: Please refer to my children by their blog nicknames. All comments that include their real names will be edited or deleted.

Language and Manners: This blog is “family friendly” and comments which include offensive or inappropriate language, or considered by the blog owner and administrator to be rude and offensive, will be edited or deleted.

Limit Links: This blog is setup to automatically hold any blog comment with more than two links in moderation, which may delay your comment from appearing on this blog. Any blog comment with more than four links, or which includes affiliate links, could be marked as comment spam. You may, however, post a link to your site or your most recent blog post.

Questions: I do my best to try and include as much information and links in my posts, when possible. If I missed something, you are more than welcome to post follow-up questions in the comment box. If you have a question, chances are you are not the only one. Therefore, I would much rather receive your comments on my blog than via email. It is a better use of my time to address everyone at once rather than answer several emails.

Comment Spam: Any comment assumed to be possible comment spam will be deleted and marked as comment spam.

Commenters Blocked: Anyone who violates this Comment Policy may be blocked from future commenting on this blog.

What To Do If Your Comment Does Not Appear: If you leave a comment on this blog and it does not appear in a reasonable time period, and you know that it does not violate these Comment Policies, please send me an email at jessica(dot)showerofroses(at)gmail(dot)com.

Responses to Comments: Comments on this blog will only be responded to in direct response to the blog comment when possible. I will not respond privately via email or other communication method to a blog comment, so be sure to check back or subscribe to replies if you leave a question.  If I haven’t responded to your question, please feel free to send me a reminder.

All Rights Reserved: I reserve the right to edit, delete, move, or mark as spam any and all comments and block certain IP addresses as necessary. By leaving a comment, you also grant me a license to post your comments. This license is worldwide, irrevocable, non-exclusive, and royalty-free. You grant me the right to store, use, transmit, display, publish, reproduce, and distribute your comments in any format, including but not limited to the blog, in a book, a video, or presentation.

Hold Harmless: You retain ownership of your comments. I do not own them and I expressly disclaim any and all liability that may result from them. By submitting a comment on this blog, you agree that the comment content is your own, and to hold this site, Shower of Roses, and all subsidiaries and representatives harmless from any and all repercussions, damages, or liability.

Trackbacks Are Comments: All trackbacks will be treated inline with the above Comment Policy.

Social Media:  You are more than welcome to follow me at Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, Twitter (I’ve never really posted much there), or on the Shower of Roses Facebook Page. I plan to go through my personal Facebook page soon and reduce the “friends” list back down to just close personal friends and family. Usually what I post on Facebook is shared from Instagram anyways.

Note: Comments will continue to be moderated through the new commenting system as I test it out. I will work on adding approved friends and frequent commenters to a “whitelist” so their comments will be published immediately. Thank you for your continued patience during this transition, as I work on setting this all up and working through any technical difficulties, here at Shower of Roses.

I LOVE getting comments, questions, and emails. I really do! I work hard to answer as many comments and emails as possible, but no matter how hard I try my inbox always fills up faster than I can empty it. In fact the only time it has been emptied completely, for about a day, was when I switched accounts back in the fall of 2011. At this particular moment I have well over 300 emails that have been “saved to answer later” sitting in my inbox…

I DO read every single email (and comments too!) but if I tried to reply to every single one I wouldn’t have any time left to live the life I blog about here at Shower of Roses, or even sleep for that matter. Please accept my sincere apologies if you haven’t heard back from me and thank you for understanding! You are welcome to email me again if you’d like – I usually have every intention of responding but your email happened to come through at an extra busy time and was quickly buried…

Thank you again for all the kind comments, emails, support and prayers. Please continue to pray for us and know that I do pray for all my visitors. May God bless you all!

St. Valentine’s Day Cards & Party

I haven’t had much time for blogging this past week but wanted to share some more pictures from St. Valentine’s Day this afternoon, including the rest of the cards we made this year.  🙂
From Dad and Mom :: We Love You “Smore” Than You Know
From Captain :: Army Men Valentine Cards

I’m not sure who had the most fun with these… Sean or Captain!  When Captain showed his Dad our inspiration he was more than willing to help find song lyrics for him to use on the cards.   He kept laughing out loud and would repeat a song lyric for me and then – in response to my blank stares – would say “You have to think of it in the context of GREEN ARMY MEN!”  😉
From Ranger and Chiquita :: Soda Pop Valentines
These were such a hit when we made them in 2012 that a couple of the children asked if we could give them again this year.
From Twinkle Toes :: Conversation Heart Valentines
From Snuggles :: Bible Candy Valentines
From Rose :: Madonna and Child Valentine Cards
From Bud :: Veggie Tale Valentines
All last week he carried around with his little box of Veggie Tale Valentines from the store, but I never did snap a picture of the cards before his older brother helped him pass them out.
.: A Few More Pictures :.

Pizza, Card Exchange, and Valentine’s Day Bingo

Ice Skating and Stroller Rides
Not only did my husband surprise me with beautiful roses and chocolates, he also stayed up late the night before cleaning the kitchen and clearing the countertops!
Sean was able to get off work a little early and meet us at the Ice Rink!  Then he and I were blessed to be able to go out to dinner, while the children spent some extra time with their friends.  After that the little ones and I headed to the store to get some things for a baby shower I was helping with on Saturday, while Sean took the oldest two to watch a Hockey game!  It was a packed day but filled with family, friends, and lots of love!

Jesus Tree – Walk with Jesus Through Lent {Sponsored Review & Giveaway}

Jesse Tree Treasures has a brand new product for Lent this year!  Similar to the felt Jesus Tree I’ve been using with our children for years, the Jesus Tree – Walk with Jesus Through Lent is an excellent teaching tool to use with children to incorporate a Lenten Bible Study on the life of Jesus.

This beautiful new set from Jesse Tree Treasures includes 64 wooden disks. There are 47 disks for the 40 days of Lent and the 7 Sundays, 10 disks for Ascension Thursday to Pentecost Sunday, and 7 bonus disks which include various holy days. The disks arrive in a gold pouch and can be easily sorted by color to coordinate the weeks with the enclosed prayer cards which list the readings for each day.

Jesse Tree Treasures suggests “laying all the discs face down in a circular pattern on a prayer table, then each day, turn one over and read a story from one of the Gospels.” Other options include gluing a magnet or thumb tack to the back and using the disks with an Lenten Calendar or creating a design using scrapbook paper in the shape of a tree or road, attaching a ribbon or jewelry bail to the back for hanging from a tree branch, or creating a path to the cross or a spiral shape with the disks on a table runner or tray. There are so many options and I’m still trying to decide how we will use our new set this year.

And now for the giveaway!

Would you like to win a free Jesus Tree – Walk with Jesus Through Lent

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
