Oh boy. . .

. . . what did I get myself into?!

Something tells me that this is not going to be a “simple” craft!

The Jesus Tree, Daily Readings and Coloring Pages

The Jesus Tree is a wonderful way to do a Lenten Bible Study with children.  Every day during lent our children look forward to reading the bible story for the day.  I usually will read the selections from the bible, and for the younger children I have made a list of coordinating readings from our New Catholic Picture Bible (NCPB).

This year I think we will also listen to the various selections using the Truth and Life Dramatized Audio Bible New Testament.

Back in 2008, I created a Jesus Tree for our family using a kit from Scripture Trees (they are now only available through Leaflet Missal).    The kit does save a little bit of time and planning, but you do not need it to create a beautiful Jesus Tree.   Anne at Under Her Starry Mantle has made a gorgeous Jesus Tree for Lent using the pictures I posted of the ornaments we made as a guide.

Also, I have had a number of emails asking about printable versions of the Jesus Tree.   It looks like this year Melissa at St. Bridgid’s Academy has come up with a lovely wall version with printable ornaments. I particularly like her Black & White Ornaments which can be colored!    Another option would be the Stepping Stones through Jesus’ Life that Monica at Equipping Catholic Families created for her family.

The past few years I have printed out coloring pages for my children.  This year, in an attempt to simplify, I planned on skipping the coloring pages.   Apparently my children really love this little addition though, so I guess we will simplify elsewhere!   😉

Since there are so many options now for coloring pages, I selected quite a few new pages this year.   I’ve included our complete list for this year below.   If you’d like other options, in addition to other activities including crosswords and word searches, you can take a look at the old posts:  Jesus Tree Week One, Week Two, Week Three, Week Four, Week Five, Week Six, and Week Seven.  I have noticed that many of the links no longer work (even though I thought I had them all fixed), but such is often the case on the even changing internet.

My Daybook :: March 7, 2011

Outside my window… the frogs have been so loud and they are driving my husband crazy. . .   I woke up the other night (in the middle of the night) to see him headed outside to try and find the frogs. Apparently, “The only way to make the frogs stop croaking is to make them croak.”  I’m still laughing!

I am listening to… Lent: Fasting and Abstinence in the Tradition of the Church from Audio Sancto.

I am thinking… about my internet usage and blogging, and what changes need to be made this lent, in order to try and grow in the virtue of temperance in this area of my life.

I am thankful… for the email that Hubby sent home from work last week stating that “All employees should report to work as usual on Monday.” Whew!  He said that we are not out of the woods yet, but at least we have a little more time to rebuild our savings in case he is indeed furloughed.

I am praying… for the precious soul of sweet little Sanjay, and for his family who misses him dearly.

From the kitchen… Right now I have a chocolate cake baking in the oven for my sister, as well as plenty of ice cream choices (Espresso Madness, Vanilla, Triple Chocolate, and Brownie Mud Pie Overload) in the freezer to go along with the cake.   I hope everyone shows up really hungry, because I’d rather not have any leftovers with Lent starting the day after tomorrow!

From the learning rooms… We are plugging along, but I’ve been suffering from burnout lately, and think my children might be too. It’s time to do a little re-evaluating to see how we can get re-motivated and out of our current slump.  I think we all miss all the fun “extras” we did last year during the Alphabet Path!  How, oh HOW, did I keep up with it all last year ?!?!

Living the Liturgical Year at Home…  Lent begins this week!  Here is the link to some of our past Lenten Activities.   We are planning on attending Mass and the Soup Dinner at our parish this Wednesday, recommitting to praying the rosary together as a family each night before bed, and will be attending Stations of the Cross on Fridays, in addition to the other things our family has decided to “give up” this Lent.

I am creating… a Lenten Calendar.  After seeing Tiffany’s Calendar I am tempted to modify ours, but at the same time, I might just keep it simple and stick with what we have done every year.   I am also hoping to put together a post from our last Little Flowers meeting a week and a half ago. . . Where does the time go?!

I am wearing… a big sweater, black sweat pants, warm socks, and slippers.  It has been a rainy day and last night was rough.  Snuggles had an earache – which seems to be part of the cold making it’s way through our family right now – and neither of us got much sleep.

I am reading… A Case For Happy & Sometimes Sappy Mom Blogs Part I and Part II.  Great posts!! Thank you, Kate!   I haven’t had much time for reading blogs this year, but I am always inspired to be a better mother and home educator by the few other “Mom Blogs” that I do read.    And, wow, I never realized that some women actually “gag” when other women use the word “Hubby” on their websites.  lol!   (I really don’t like using “nicknames” – but do so at the request of my “Hubby.”)  🙂

On my iTouch… I’ve been wanting to purchase a copy of The Truth and Life Audio Bible for awhile, but just haven’t been able to spend the money yet.  I was so excited to find that they now have an App available and was just able to download the Book of Mark for free!   We will be spending some time listening to it during Lent.

Pondering these words… from a recent Conversation with God Daily Dose:

“There are no grounds, objectively speaking, for letting worry and concern for tomorrow weigh us down: we will be given the graces we need in order to contend with anything that crops up. We will be victorious!”

Noticing that… the most consistently searched phrase in my sidebar, sadly enough, is currently “baby died.”

Here are a few posts that you may be looking for:

Towards personal care… I just received my Number and T-Shirt in the mail for the Nun Run!  So exciting, despite the fact that I am just a shadow runner.   I wish my team all lived close by, so we could run/walk together, but it will be fun just the same!

Around the house… I spent the Saturday before last looking for new frames for the wedding pictures (Hubby & I, our parents, and our grandparents) that use to hang in our living room, before we remodeled and painted the walls.  I ended up purchasing simple black frames, in addition to a black and bronze frame for our wedding certificate.   All frames were 40% off at Michaels that weekend, and with the additional 25% off coupon I had they were quite affordable, even though I needed so many.   We decided to hang the pictures in our new Family Room above the couch.   I was only able to get 5 of the 8×10’s, but they gave me a rain check for the last two and I should be able to pick them up soon.

On keeping home… I’m looking forward to another 40 Bags of Stuff Challenge!   How does the stuff accumulate so quickly around here?

One of my favorite things.. taking pictures, even though I have SO. VERY. MUCH to learn when it comes to using the correct settings, etc.  Our friend Marc explained some of the settings to me last week and I’m still trying to figure it all out.   Apparently using the “Tungsten” setting is much better to use indoors. . .  Here is a comparison:

My usual camera setting – 1pm on the day of Marc’s party
Using the AV setting with Tungsten lighting selected
taken at 1pm – the day after the party
The last two pictures capture the “real life” colors (paint, cabinets, tile, etc.) so much better!

A few plans for the week:

Monday:  My sisters’ (the twins – JoAnn & Mary) birthday!  Mary is off in HI living with another one of my sisters, but JoAnn is home for Spring break and is coming over for cake, ice cream and to watch a movie, with a couple more of our sisters!
Tuesday:  Shrove Tuesday!  Make Pancakes and Miniature King Cakes for Mardi Gras
Wednesday: Doctor appt for Snuggles and Attend Mass and Soup Dinner for Ash Wednesday
Thursday: Start putting together our Stations of the Cross Kit
Friday: Attend Mass and Stations of the Cross (the Boy’s will be serving)

A Picture thought I am sharing:

Rascal’s Godfather needed a “7 year old girl” to “help sick kids by donating blood for a scientific study for Rare Diseases.”  We left the decision up to Twinkle Toes, who was a little nervous, but willing to do so with a little bit of bribery from mom the promise of a new Calico Critter Family.  Afterwards she even got to go out for an ice cream cone (from dad, who didn’t know about mom’s promise!).  She was pretty excited and hardly felt a thing.  🙂

Behold the faithful and prudent servant whom the lord placed at the head of His family.  May the prayers of the blessed patriarch Joseph, husband of Your most holy Mother, help us, O Lord, we pray, that what is not in our own power to obtain, may be given to us at his intercession: Who livest and reignest forever. A “Surprise” Birthday Party for Marc

Hubby and I had the pleasure of hosting a birthday party for our friend Marc on Tuesday night!  He was expecting the small group of us that usually celebrate his birthday each year, but we surprised him by inviting quite a few others to join the fun.
I think he was surprised.  🙂
It was such a great group (between 30-40) of people, from a number of different Catholic parishes in our area.
Everyone brought a “hearty appetizer or salad” to share and the food was delicious!
Two of our priests sang a song from their seminarian days, at the North American College in Rome.  Marc recorded it and I am hoping he will give me a copy!  🙂   It was so great to hear it again, since Father C. (pictured on the right) sang it for Hubby & I at our wedding rehearsal dinner many years ago.
Apparently “40 candles is just wrong. . .”  Sorry, Marc, you just have to have the correct number of candles, at least in my opinion…
And Myrna even brought her “traditional” musical Happy Birthday candle holder!
Our children fought sleep for as long as they possibly could, due to all the fun and excitement.
Now you know why I haven’t spent much any time blogging this week!   😉
Happy Birthday, Marc!

Preparing for Lent :: Our Lenten Journey

Also considering. . .

“Lent is like a long ‘retreat’ during which we can turn back into ourselves and listen to the voice of God, in order to defeat the temptations of the Evil One. It is a period of spiritual ‘combat’ which we must experience alongside Jesus, not with pride and presumption, but using the arms of faith: prayer, listening to the word of God and penance. In this way we will be able to celebrate Easter in truth, ready to renew the promises of our Baptism.”
~ Pope Benedict XVI, from his Sunday remarks before praying the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square on February 21, 2010

Updated Post:
The Lenten Season In Our Catholic Home

My Daybook :: February 22, 2011

Outside my window… the weather has been so interesting this past week.  Snow, Rain, Sun, Sleet – we have had it all!  Yesterday it was so warm and sunny, and today is is back to freezing and even snowing at the moment.   Here is the picture I took from the couch the other morning.  Our children were so excited that the snow stuck around for a few hours.

I am listening to… Teaching Textbooks.  It’s Rascal’s turn on the lap top. . .  Usually the boys wear the ear buds while they are doing their math, but for some reason he isn’t today.   Teaching Textbooks has been my favorite change in curriculum this past year!

I am thinking… about my remaining Little Flowers meetings for the year and planning out the notebook pages, crafts and snacks.   I still haven’t decided on a craft for patience (perhaps an embroidery project?) or fortitude.  Any ideas?

I am thankful for… Four day weekends!  Hubby had Friday-Monday off and was able to paint the doors and some of the trim in our remodel and I was able to clean and organize a couple of my “hot spots.”

I am hoping and praying… for my Father-in-law.  The recovery from his operation has been very challenging for him, and he will be needing radiation after all.  Please remember him in your prayers!

From the kitchen… Edible Chairs for the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter!  I still haven’t made plans for dinner, but since we are heading to town this afternoon, I think I will just pick up a Baked Chicken and Salad mix while we are at Costco.

From the learning rooms… These pictures were from a couple weeks ago – you can tell, since my boys still needed haircuts badly!  The kids had so much fun “Pollinating Donuts” as an extra activity for Botany

… a little too much fun!

Living the Liturgical Year at Home… Last week we really enjoyed celebrating St. Valentine’s Day and attending the Valentine’s Day Brunch following Mass at our parish.   I brought a Cherry Cheese Coffee Cake to share and even remembered to bring a wedding photo!  It was so fun to see all the wedding pictures and  Father even gave a blessing to all of the married couples, Hubby & I included.

I am creating… a compilation of all my past Lenten Posts.   I started working on updating my Feast Day Plans and Celebrations post, but decided to break it up into monthly posts (with the additions of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter) like I’ve done over at Catholic Cuisine.   I’m hoping that it will make it a little easier to keep updated this way. . . I guess we will see.

I am Snuggles is wearing… new Buzz and Woody underwear!   Yesterday he finally had his very first potty training success, thanks to Buzz and Woody and the promise of a M&M for each successful attempt.  I learned with my older boys that it just isn’t worth the fight and they will potty train easily when they are ready, but I was starting to think that Rose might be potty trained before Snuggles! He had two successes (It was so cute when he said “I’m doing it!!!!”), followed by a couple accidents, and today isn’t going that great, but at least it is a start!

I am reading… the same stack of books is still sitting on my nightstand, with the addition of The Gift of Summer Snow: A Tale from the Garden of Mysteries.  I just haven’t had much time for reading lately. Hopefully I can get back to them soon, since I have a couple other books I’d like to read this Lent.

On my iTouch… Words with Friends.  I think it has become an addiction. . . Not really, but it sure is fun!  My brother just added it to his iPhone as well, so I have another new opponent.   Yay!

Pondering these words… from Chapter 15 of The Cure Of Ars.  This is really such a great little book.  Hubby read it to us, a chapter or two each night at dinnertime, and we recently finished reading it before moving on to a short book about St. Therese.

To a mother of a large family who was expecting another child, he said with fatherly kindness and consideration: “Be comforted, my child.  If you only knew the women who will go to Hell because they did not bring into the world the children they should have given to it!”

Noticing that… I am not “expecting another child”, but that 42 day cycle sure made me start thinking otherwise and spend way too much money on tests.   😉

Towards personal care… I haven’t decided yet, but I am thinking about joining Lena’s team for a Nun Run on March 12th.

Around the house… lots of little projects that need to be completed in the next week.  Father will be coming over this Friday for dinner and then next Tuesday we are having a little get together, so I am hoping to finish them soon!

One of my favorite things.. Celebrating my children’s birthdays!  Our children just love having themed birthday parties, regardless of whether it is celebrated with friends (certain years) or with just our family. They are already talking about which “theme” will be next.  🙂    We also just celebrated my brother Scott’s 21st birthday and my Dad’s 56th birthday this past week.  Happy birthday to you both!!

A few plans for the week:

Monday ::  President’s Day
Tuesday ::  Birthday Party and Errands
Friday :: Mass, Little Flowers and Father coming over for Dinner
Saturday :: Baseball Evaluations

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
