Back to {Home} School Giveaway :: Your School of Love: A Spiritual Companion for Teaching Mothers & Mama’s Notebooks
To celebrate the new school year I’m hosting a giveaway each day this week (September 1st-7th) featuring educational products and books! Today’s giveaway is sponsored by Mama’s Notebooks and Shower of Roses!
The next time I come up with a “great idea” to schedule giveaways for SEVEN DAYS IN A ROW during the first week of school, could someone please knock some sense into me?! I had every intention of writing and scheduling the posts ahead of time, but of course that didn’t happen… Between our daughter’s 11th birthday last Saturday, lots of family in town, and my brother’s golf tournament last Thursday-Monday, we were hardly home until school started Tuesday morning. Despite the extra time I needed to spend on the computer, our school year has gotten off to a surprisingly productive start and I’ve really enjoyed hosting the giveaways, reading all the comments, and introducing you to some awesome resources and businesses! All good things must come to an end and this is the last giveaway I’m hosting, at least until later this month. 😉
I’ve shared about my Mama’s Notebook in the past and I’m still using it (almost) every day to keep track of my to-do lists, menu plans, what we’ve been reading, and most recently my exercise and diet goals. Heather at Mama’s Notebooks is always so generous when it comes to sponsoring giveaways here at Shower of Roses and has kindly offered to once again send one of my visitors a copy of Mama’s Notebook!
Mama’s Notebook: Weekly Planner & Organizer
Mama’s Notebook provides you with an easy, flexible, and efficient way to organize your life. In one glance, you can coordinate your meal plan with the whole day’s events and tasks, and there’s always ample room to take notes on the things that matter to you most!
Unlike other planners, you can start up Mama’s Notebook on any week of the year, and you can skip weeks as needed. The back section of the planner provides you with easy reference sheets to help you schedule and shop efficiently.

Current Special: Free mail shipping or 50% off ground shipping with the code SMG14 through September 11.
I also want to give away a Kindle Edition of the brand new book Your School of Love: A Spiritual Companion for Teaching Mothers which was recently published by TAN. I’ve always enjoyed the other books by Agnes M. Penny (I especially love the prayers in the back of her books. In the past I’ve shared her Prayer of a Bereaved Mother of an Unbaptized Baby here and Prayer of a Bereaved Mother of a Baptized Baby here.) so when I saw this book was now available I ordered a copy. I just started reading Your School of Love this past week. From what I’ve read so far, my own teaching style is different than the authors but as the description states this book “is not a homeschooling curriculum or a how to guide” and I have found it inspiring to read her thoughts as we begin our new school year.
Here are a few quotes I’ve highlighted in my copy:
Homeschooling is what we make it. If we see it as a burden, it will be a burden. If we see it as a joy, it will be a joy. If we see it as a grave but rewarding responsibility, a vocation within a vocation, then that’s what it will be. If we see homeschooling as an opportunity to mold the intellectual, cultural, and spiritual character of our children and our own personal path to grow closer to our children and to Christ, then it will be that, as well. ~ Chapter 1, Homeschooling
Homeschooling makes huge demands on our time, our energy, our patience, and our emotions. These are the gifts we present to God. ~ Chapter 3, The Vocation to Homeschool
A cranky, discouraged, or stressed-out woman cannot effectively fulfill her duties as teacher or mother, and is certainly a poor sample of a saint, which is our ultimate goal. Therefore, we have to avoid burnout for our own sake and for the sake of our children. ~ Chapter 4, Burnout
We as homeschooling parents, hoping to encourage our children to learn, and perhaps remembering our own toilsome schooldays, seek to make learning fun, but a better way to approach learning might be just to avoid making learning “unfun.” ~ Chapter 8, Making Learning Fun
Your School of Love: A Spiritual Companion for Teaching Mothers
(also available directly from TAN)
Book Description From the Back Cover:
Homeschooling your children can be a beautiful and fruitful experience for both you and your children…but it can also be overwhelming. Agnes Penney, the popular author of Your Labor of Love and Your Vocation of Love, is here to help you along the way. Your School of Love is not a homeschooling curriculum, or a how-to guide, but a spiritual companion that will help you and your children get the most out of homeschooling. Your School of Love is packed with short chapters, perfect for the always-busy homeschooling parent, offering tips and advice on a variety of topics, including:
- Homeschooling girls, boys, large families, young children, and teenagers
- How to keep up with Homeschooling during pregnancy or with a new baby in the house
- How to include fathers
- How to encourage and balance your children’s social lives
- How to Balance Confidence and Humility while teaching your children
- Making Homeschooling a prayerful endeavor
- How to deal with the emotional struggles of homeschooling
- And so much more (like how to avoid burn-out, how to foster vocations, how to teach a child to read and write)
Your School of Love is lovingly written by a homeschooling mother, and will be your constant companion throughout your homeschooling years, both as a guide, a spiritual reference, and a helpful friend who knows what it’s like to deal with the struggles of homeschooling, and also how to embrace the great joys.

Back to {Home} School Giveaway :: RC History
To celebrate the new school year I’m hosting a giveaway each day this week (September 1st-7th) featuring educational products and books! Today’s giveaway is sponsored by RC History!
Our family has been using Connecting With History from RC History for the past seven years, ever since I first discovered it back in 2008 while searching for a Catholic history program for our children. It is such an awesome program! We started with the first three volumes but Volume 4 had not yet been published when we cycled through the first time, which is why we took a little break and I created our own plans for American History in 2011. What a job that was! It made me realize just how grateful I am for all the time and research Sonya has put into creating this excellent resource for homeschooling families!
The Connecting with History program has only improved over time! RC History is now working on creating Daily Lesson Plans for each volume! Last year we went back to studying Ancient History, using the book lists, Syllabus and Daily Lesson Plans from Volume 1 and this year we are using Volume 2 to study the New Testament and Early Medieval time period. The Daily Lesson Plans have been such a blessing and they make it so easy for me to give each of my children their daily assignments and also help me decide which of the (many!) book suggestions to read aloud as a family.
RC History has also been working on creating Companion Readers for each volume. Connecting with History Companion Reader: Old Testament and Ancient History is the first in the series and is now available for purchase! I’ve been flipping through our new copy and wish we would have had this last year and that Volume 2 was available NOW… I love it! I’m sure we will be using the Companion Readers the next time we cycle through the program.
Sonya Romens at RC History has generously offered to send one of my visitors here at Shower of Roses a copy of the new Connecting with History Companion Reader Volume 1: Old Testament and Ancient History! You can click over to RC History to scroll through some sample pages.
Note: Shower of Roses is an affiliate for RC History. If you click over to RC History from a link on this blog and make a purchase, I will receive a small commission from RC History. Thank you so very much to all those who use my affiliate links!

Back to {Home} School Giveaway :: Arx Publishing
To celebrate the new school year I’m hosting a giveaway each day this week (September 1st-7th) featuring educational products and books! Today’s giveaway is sponsored by Arx Publishing!
Today I’d like to introduce you to Arx Publishing! Arx Publishing is a small Catholic press working to restore traditional values by ‘reclaiming’ literature with lots of great books to choose from including many books perfect for homeschoolers.
Arx Publishing sent me a few review copies plus four of their books to offer my visitors here at Shower of Roses! One of the books Arx Publishing sent is Belisarius Book I: The First Shall Be Last by Paolo A. Belzoni. Our family is studying Early Medieval History this school year and it is one of the books suggested in the Connecting with History Rhetoric Level (Grades 10-12). Our oldest is only in 8th grade but I’m looking forward to reading this book myself and sharing it with the boys the next time we study this time period when they are in high school!
Belisarius Book I: The First Shall Be Last by Paolo A. Belzoni
(also available at Amazon in paperback or Kindle Edition – affiliate links)
Belisarius: The First Shall Be Last is a historical novel that recreates the early life of this amazing hero. Filled with action and intrigue, the book is replete with historical and religious detail drawn from ancient historians. The novel is a fascinating introduction to the Justinianic period the last gasp of the Roman Empire and the infancy of Christendom in both the East and West.
Centurion’s Daughter by Justin Swanton
(also available at Amazon in paperback or Kindle Edition)
Written and illustrated by master storyteller Justin Swanton, Centurion’s Daughter is a thoughtful and compelling journey to a little-known period of history when an empire fell and the foundations of Christendom were laid.
Our boys are still a little too young to read Angels in Iron but my husband, who loves reading about the Siege of Malta, purchased and enjoyed reading this book last year. In fact he recently loaned our copy to one of my younger brothers to read as well! It’s a great book for high school aged boys.
Angles in Iron by Nicholas Prata

Back to {Home} School Giveaway :: Homeschool in the Woods Publishing
To celebrate the new school year I’m hosting a giveaway each day this week (September 1st-7th) featuring educational products and books! Today’s giveaway is sponsored by Homeschool in the Woods!
Our children love studying History thanks to all the great books and supplements we have used over the years including many of the products from Homeschool in the Woods. Just this morning one of the boys pulled out his History Through the Ages “Record of Time” to add an illustration and entry for “Julius Caesar Assassinated” after reading the story of Julius Caesar in Famous Men of Rome.
If you flip the page you can see some of the timeline entries he added the last time we studied New Testament and Early Medieval History with Connecting with History. It’s always so fun to look through their individual timelines!
This year I plan to once reuse the New Testament Lap Book Printables from Homeschool in the Woods (along with our Connecting with History book lists and lesson plans) with the girls, since they were too young to create the New Testament Lap Books with their brothers back in 2010. (Look how small the boys were back then!)
We have also used (and loved!) the lap book printables from the Time Travelers Series for American History! Here are the links to our posts of all the boys’ American History Unit Studies and Lap Books including: New World Explorers, Colonial Life, America Revolution, The Early 19th Century, The Civil War, and Industrial Revolution-Great Depression. They keep asking when we are going to finish their World War II Lap Book to add to the collection!
Homeschool in the Woods has recently started creating a new series of Lap-Paks for Kindergarteners-2nd Graders beginning with the Knights and Benjamin Franklin Hands-On History Lap-Paks!
Knights Lap-Pak: The Middle Ages was an era of kings, queens, castles, and of course… knights! But what did it take to become a knight? …And what did they do? Discover the world of knights, from their beginnings as a page and squire to the knighting ceremony! Learn about Crusaders, weapons of warfare, the Code of Chivalry, and much more!
Benjamin Franklin Lap-Pak: The Benjamin Franklin Lap-Pak takes a look at this “Renaissance man” through reading text and hands-on projects that reinforce lessons in creative ways. Included are 12 lap booking project topics that incorporate coloring and drawing, as well as basic cutting skills and opportunities for penmanship for younger elementary students…
I’m so excited to make these new Lap Books with my little ones when we get back around to studying Medieval and American History. Homeschool in the Woods has offered to giveaway one downloadable copy of each to my visitors here at Shower of Roses! Two names will be chosen, the first will receive a copy of Knights and the second will receive a copy of Benjamin Franklin. Good luck!

Back to {Home} School Giveaway :: Saint Magnus, The Last Viking
To celebrate the new school year I’m hosting a giveaway each day this week (September 1st-7th) featuring educational products and books! Today’s giveaway is sponsored by author Susan Peek!
Come back in time 900 years, to the fierce and desolate Northern lands, where Norsemen ruled with ax and sword. A dying king, a shocking death-wish, his heirs divided with an oath of blood . . .
As I’m sure you can tell from our book collection, our family loves reading books about the lives of the saints! Back in 2006, at our annual All Saints Party, our oldest son won a copy of The Last Viking, an audio story about St. Magnus of 12th-century Scotland. Our boys were a little young for the dramatic story at the time and we found that we needed to skip over a couple parts, but it made a huge impression on them and the following year our oldest choose to dress up as this inspiring martyr for our 2007 All Saints Party. St. Magnus has been one of his favorite saints ever since!
I had not been able to find a children’s book on St. Magnus and was so excited when I received an email from author Susan Peek (who was also the writer of the audio/radio play The Last Viking!) asking if we’d like a review copy of Saint Magnus The Last Viking, the first book from her new book series entitled God’s Forgotten Friends: Lives of Little-known Saints. She kindly sent an autographed copy to our oldest son for his birthday and also included an extra copy for me to offer to my visitors here at Shower of Roses!
Book Description from the Back Cover:
In this fast-paced new novel by the highly popular Susan Peek, the conflict unfolds between Magnus Erlendson, a heroic young prince aflame with the love of God, and his outlawed cousin Hakon, who blames Magnus for his banishment from their kingdom. What follows is a tale of betrayal and revenge, bravery and forgiveness, as Magnus seeks to restore his father’s vanquished kingdom to its rightful hands. Entertaining and inspiring from start to finish, a must read for all those who thrill to learn the life of a saint we never knew existed!
The book is recommended for ages 15 and up, but our oldest just turned 14 and is currently reading and enjoying this story written especially for boys.
Susan is also the author of several young adult Catholic saint novels including Crusader King: A Novel of Baldwin IV and the Crusades published by TAN Books in 2003 and A Soldier Surrenders: A Novel of Saint Camillus published by Ignatius Press in 2007, both which I purchased for our oldest son’s Easter basket last year. We are looking forward to reading the rest of her upcoming books about God’s Forgotten Friends!

Feasts & Seasons :: Our September Book Basket
At the beginning of each month I fill a basket with books featuring the the various saints whose feast days will be celebrated during the month and place it in the living room. Throughout the month I will find the children curled up on the couch reading books they have chosen from the basket, either on their own or to their younger siblings. I also choose books from the basket for some of our afternoon family read-alouds. Our collection started very small and we have continued adding additional books over the years which we have either purchased or have been given as gifts.
