Little Flowers Girls’ Club ~ Fortitude

I didn’t intend to take nearly a week off of blogging, but the days weeks are just flying by!  Despite my lack of pre-planning, everything fell into place last Friday for our final Little Flowers Girls’ Club meeting for Wreath III.  Following the meeting we went out to dinner with friends, I spent Saturday packing books to mail, Sunday after Mass we had another family over for dinner, Monday we made a trip to the Post Office, Park and Library, and yesterday I had my monthly OB appointment in town where I was finally able to hear our little one’s heart beating on the fetal doppler – 140 precious beats per minute!  🙂   We have even more plans this evening, but I do have a few minutes this afternoon, while the little ones nap, to share a few pictures from our meeting:

~ Coloring Pages ~

Hyacinth Coloring Page (created using an image found online – if you’d like to use my document, send me an email and I will forward it to you)

~ Notebook Pages ~

For this month’s Virtue Notebook/Scrapbook Page, I used the memory verse for Fortitude,  an image of St. Julie Billiart, the poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling (which also helps complete one of the assignments in the Member’s guide), some images of pink hyacinths, and an inspiring quote from St. Julie Billiart:

“We must have courage in the times we live in.  Great souls are needed, souls having the interests of God at Heart.”

Here is a picture of the sample page I created:

Here are the girls’ completed pages for “Fortitude”:

~ Lesson on Fortitude ~

Amy gave the lesson for this virtue, and apparently I missed some wonderful photo opportunities while I was inside setting up the craft.  I hear that she set up a fun obstacle course for the girls to complete outside.  Maybe she can tell us a little more about it in the comments! 🙂

~ Craft :: “Stand Firm in the Faith” Sandals ~

I have been wanting to decorate Flip Flops with my girls ever since seeing the idea included in Sunshine’s Hawaiian Birthday Party! When I saw that the memory verse for this virtue said “stand firm in the faith” I thought this would be the perfect time.

I had each girl bring a pair of flip flops to the meeting, and I picked up some Fabric Fusion, various Ribbon, and some embellishments for all the girls.  It was one of the more challenging and time consuming crafts, but thankfully I had three of the moms around to help.

The girls were all very happy with how their new sandals turned out!

~ Wreath III Flower Cupcakes ~

Pink Hyacinth Cupcakes

When I was looking for ideas, Charlotte mentioned that Pink Popcorn came to mind.  I thought that was a perfect idea, but since I didn’t have all the ingredients I opted to make the pink hyacinths using some pink Smooth & Melty Petite Mints (I had purchased a few bags at 75% off in January from Hickory Farms and had one left) along with a little green frosting for the leaves.  I also sprayed the white base frosting with a little green, before adding the candies.  I thought they turned out cute, and they were very yummy despite the fact that my six year old pointed out that “the chocolate cake even looks like dirt!”

Little Flowers Girls’ Club ~ Patience

A couple weeks ago I hosted our 8th Little Flowers Girls’ Club meeting for Wreath III. I thought I published this post that weekend but, in the midst of wrapping up the baby shower  and golf camp, followed by a camping trip for my boys and our local parade the next day, I never did and I just ran across it in my drafts folder…  Oops!

Since we went a little out of order in May, skipping ahead so we could focus on Mary Mother of God during her month, we went back to the virtue of Patience for this meeting, learning about St. Bathildis and St. Elizabeth the mother of St. John the Baptist.   (I loved that our meeting happened to fall on June 24th, the feast of the Birth of St. John the Baptist. So appropriate!)

Here is the overview of our meeting:

~ Notebook Pages ~

For this month’s Virtue Notebook/Scrapbook Page, I used the memory verse for Patience,  a beautiful prayer for patience, an image of St. Bathildis, and a Lily of the Valley (the flower for this virtue). You can download my document here.

Here is a picture of the sample page I created:

Here are the girls’ completed pages for “Patience”:

~ Craft :: Painting Flower Pots ~

Since it takes patience to paint and to grow flowers, I chose to have the girls paint flower pots and then take the seeds home to plant and patiently wait for them to grow!

They always enjoy painting at Little Flowers, and they painted the cutest little pots!

~ Lesson on Patience ~

One of the other moms gave the lesson this month, while I set out all of the painting supplies.   She ended the lesson with a short activity, taking turns to put together a puzzle, encouraging the girls to practice the virtue of patience as they wait their turn, even if they see where a certain piece of the puzzle went.  I thought it was a great idea, and the girls had fun putting the puzzle together.

Lily of the Valley Cupcakes

As I was trying to come up with a way to create Lily of the Valley cupcakes, using the supplies I could find in my pantry, I decided to try out some white chocolate chips along with a little green frosting.   What do you think?  Do those look like Lily of the Valley Cupcakes to you?  I thought they turned out cute.

I will be hosting our last meeting tomorrow afternoon, and still need to start preparing…  Perhaps you can say a little prayer that I am able to pull it all together and still get a little sleep! 😉

St. Bathildis help us practice our patience in all that we do to bring glory to our Lord !

Organizing the School Room :: A Used Book Sale!

In a recent Daybook post I asked for suggestions on the best way to go about selling some of our books that we have duplicates of or are just sitting on our shelves, to make room (and a little money) for next year’s school books. After a bit of encouragement from a couple visitors (who mentioned Tracy’s recent Used Book Post), I decided to go ahead and try listing them here at Shower of Roses!  I hope you all don’t mind.  🙂

If you are interested in purchasing any of the books, please leave a comment with your email address and I will send you my PayPal info. (If you’d rather not leave your email address, you can email me directly at jessica(dot)showerofroses(at)gmail(dot)com) Please add $5 to your order to cover the cost of packaging and media rate in the continental U.S. unless you want a lot of books, then the shipping might be a little more, and I will get back to you with the actual shipping total.

Saintly Summer Fun :: St. Maria Goretti

This afternoon we continued our Saintly Summer Fun with a story, coloring pages, a craft, snacks and games for today’s feast of Saint Maria Goretti!   We invited a few families to join us, and when everyone arrived I realized we had twenty children kids ages 12 and down at our home!  I am pretty sure that everyone had a great time and will sleep well tonight, especially me! 😉

It didn’t occur to me until I started planning the afternoon, how challenging it might be to teach children about this saint, who was a Martyr for Purity.  Thankfully there is a great story, appropriate for young children, written by Mary Fabyan Windeatt.   I also decided to focus on forgiveness, teaching the children about how St. Maria forgave the young man that killed her, and later appeared to him in prison, which led to his conversion.  I also shared that St. Maria died in 1902, and her mother was present at her canonization in 1950, the first time a parent was present for a child’s canonization
~ Saint Story & Coloring Pages ~

Originally I planned on reading the story out of the St. Maria Goretti Coloring Book.  However, due to it’s length, at the last minute I opted for the short story from A Holy Card Prayer Book.

It was a little difficult to find coloring pages for St. Maria Goretti.   Even though I do have the St. Maria Goretti Coloring Book, I haven’t asked the company for permission to copy any of the pages so I went on a search to see what I could find elsewhere.   I was also able to find this illustration (though not technically a coloring page) at The Catholic Illustrator’s Guild, as well as an option on my Faith Keepers Holy Card Maker Collection from Catholic Artworks.

~ Craft Time ~

Handprint Lilies

As a craft, all the children made Handprint Lilies!   I just love handprint crafts, and all the lilies turned out so pretty.   They are simple enough to make, though most of the children needed a little bit of help at some point.  Here are the directions:

Supplies:
  • Pencil
  • White Card Stock
  • Scissors
  • Green Card Stock
  • Hole Punch
  • Green Plastic Straw
  • Tape
  • Yellow Pipe Cleaner

Directions:

Have the children trace their hand onto a piece of white card stock and cut out the shape. Cut two double leaves from green card stock and punch holes in the centers where the leaves meet.

Curl the paper fingers and leaves by wrapping them around a pencil.

Wrap the hand around the top of a green plastic straw and secure it with tape. Slide the leaves onto the straw and tape them in place. For the flower’s stamen, fold half of a yellow pipe cleaner in half and curl down the ends. Insert the folded end in the straw.

~ Games ~

.: Forgiveness Tag :.

I had a hard time deciding on a game for this saint.  I ended up modifying the traditional game of “Freeze Tag”  – with the person that freezes you symbolizing sin, which freezes/cripples us and the person that un-freezes you symbolizing the priest in confession, forgiving us and giving us the grace to fight sin.

When we were done they all begged to play Blind Man’s Bluff again from last week, they enjoyed it that much!  🙂    I also wanted to make up a Crossword Puzzle, but just didn’t have the time.  Perhaps next year!

~ Snack Time ~

St. Maria Goretti’s Flames of Forgiveness Cupcakes

As I was trying to come up with a snack for the children I decided to focus on tying in the lily, the symbol for St. Maria, and the vision Alessandro had of Maria, leading to his conversion:

“While in prison for his crime, Alessandro had a vision of Maria. He saw a garden where a young girl, dressed in white, gathered lilies. She smiled, came near him, and encouraged him to accept an armful of the lilies. As he took them, each lily transformed into a still white flame. Maria then disappeared. This vision of Maria led to Alessandro’s conversion, and he later testified at her cause for beatification.” ~ SQPN

~ Group Photo ~

I tried to get a picture of all the kids, but 14 of 20 was the best I could do! 😉

Oh Saint Maria Goretti who, strengthened by God’s grace, did not hesitate even at the age of twelve to shed your blood and sacrifice life itself to defend your virginal purity, look graciously on the unhappy human race which has strayed far from the path of eternal salvation. Teach us all, and especially youth, with what courage and promptitude we should flee for the love of Jesus anything that could offend Him or stain our souls with sin. Obtain for us from our Lord victory in temptation, comfort in the sorrows of life, and the grace which we earnestly beg of thee (here insert intention), and may we one day enjoy with thee the imperishable glory of Heaven. Amen.

Saint Maria Goretti, pray for us!

The King of the Golden City

The St. Philomena Foundation has recently released The King of the Golden City on a 2 CD set!  The original version, which was only available on cassette (and was our first introduction to this beautiful story), has been completely digitally remastered and is finally available on CD.

“Simonetta’s “King of the Golden City” is a dramatic reading of a book written by a nun, Mother Mary Loyola of the Bar Convent in York, England in 1925 (with Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat). The book was written as an allegory, which means that it uses fictional characters and events as symbols for real characters and events. In this case, the true meaning of the story tells us of Christ, the Church, the Sacraments, guardian angels, Heaven, Purgatory and hell, among other Catholic truths too numerous to mention. Our family loves the story and so does everyone we know who has ever read it. Simonetta takes this great and touching Catholic story and brings it to life, with her engaging reading and all original music and sound. I know you and you’re families are going to love it and that it’s going to touch you in the same way that her music does. It comes on two, full-length cassettes, including a new song written by Simonetta just for this recording: “Dilecta”.”

I have used this story as part of my children’s First Holy Communion Preparation, and my oldest daughter will be studying it soon, along with the study guide available as a free download (this is no longer free but can be purchased here) from CHC.

You can purchase the CD (for a donation) from The St. Philomena Foundation or from Amazon, or you can download the CD here or here.   As always, you can order 1 free copy of this CD by mail.     (We also own another audio dramatization of this story, which is available from Pro Multis Media.)

Anyhow, I just thought I would pass this along in case any of you have been waiting as long as we have for this version to be released on CD!

Red, White and Boom!

I hope you all had a fun filled Fourth of July weekend!  Our weekend was a blast, filled with a lots of great friends, delicious food, and ending with a fireworks show late last night.

Chiquita decorated a cake to take to the BBQ we attended on the Fourth, which was hosted by some friends who just arrived back in town!  My boys are so excited to have their dear friend (who loves Strategy Games and “War” as much, if not more than they do!) back for the summer.

We have company coming over tomorrow for some more Saintly Summer Fun and I need to go and finish getting ready… But, before I go, here is one of the highlights from the birthday BBQ we attended on Sunday for another friend.   The kids absolutely LOVED this little hands on off science lesson given by Rascal’s Godfather:

Saintly Summer Fun :: Saints Peter and Paul

This afternoon we continued our Saintly Summer Fun with stories, coloring pages, a craft, snacks and games for today’s feast of Saints Peter and Paul! Amy and her family were not able to make it, since she is still out of town as the doctors work on healing Daisy’s heart, and they were missed. . .   We did have some other friends join us and it was such a fun filled day!

~ Saint Story & Coloring Pages ~

First we read a couple stories about St. Peter and St. Paul from A Holy Card Prayer Book.   I was given this book a couple years ago, and it is wonderful.  I believe it is out of print, but it is well worth the effort to try and find a copy. (Amazon has a few affordable options at the moment.)

Not only are the pencil illustrations throughout the bookjust gorgeous…

there are also short stories and prayers included as well.

While I was reading, the children had their choice of coloring illustrations of either St. Paul from Waltzing Matilda, Sts. Peter and Paul from Imagekind, or St. Peter and the Keys to the Kingdom from Catholic Mom’s Helper

Additional Options:
I printed these out for my children to work on throughout the rest of the week.
St. Paul Preaching in Athens from St. John the Baptist

~ Craft Time ~

The “Barque” of Peter Sail Boats

When I was trying to come up with a craft idea for today, my husband suggested making ships/boats, since Recalling how those outside of Noah’s Ark were destroyed, the ship became an early symbol of the Church with its associations with “The Barque of Peter, the Fisherman.” And although most of St. Paul’s missions were accomplished by walking, he also traveled by boat.  I did a little searching, trying to come up with an inexpensive craft that wouldn’t require a trip to the store and decided to go with the cute little Juicebox Boats that were featured in Parents magazine. (Looking at the link again now, I just realized we forgot to add little flags to the sails.  Oops!)

I didn’t have any used Priority envelopes laying around, so I just cut sails out of plain white copy paper.  After the kids had decorated the sails with illustrations, I covered each one with clear packing tape to protect them from water damage.   Originally I thought about laminating them, but then decided not to since that might make them a little too top heavy.   The tape worked great!

Once the boats were completed we tried them out in the sink and the kids *loved* them!  They float great. (We did have one rather tippy boat, and will add a small slit to the top and drop in a few pennies to weight it down a little bit.)  My boys are already making plans for all the remaining juice boxes in our fridge!

~ Games ~

.: St. Paul’s Journey to Rome :.

I had a few games planned for this week… The first was a little maze I created, calling it “St. Paul’s Journey to Rome.”  You can download my document at Dropbox if you’d like.  We had a race to see who would finish first, so I handed out all the papers face down.

Even though this little guy was one of the youngest, he was the first one finished and won the bag of Skittles.  I mean he finished FAST, I barely had time to snap a couple pictures and he was saying I’m done.   Apparently, according to his mom, he loves mazes!  All the other kids got to choose a small candy once they completed their maze.

.: St. Paul’s Blind Man’s Bluff :.

Next we headed outside for a game of Blind Man’s Bluff.   I thought that since St. Paul was stuck blind by a bright light from Heaven for a few days, this game would tie in perfectly.   The kids had a blast, and it was so fun to watch them play!

.: St. Peter’s Fishers of Men :.

The last game we played was inspired by the Year 3 Blue Knights Leader’s Guide, and is called Fishing For Men.  Using a net (I had one that I picked up at the Dollar Store for a Good Shepherd Garden Party) one of the children tries to capture others for Christ and bring them into Peter’s Barque.   As each child is caught he becomes a fisherman also!

~ Snack Time ~

Saints Peter and Paul Cupcakes

For an afternoon snack I served Saints Peter and Paul Cupcakes.  I thought they ended up turning out cute, and very symbolic, especially since I really didn’t have much of a plan when I started making them! 🙂  I posted the details over at Catholic Cuisine.

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
