Inspired by Charlie Daniels. . .

This little conversation took place between Captain and I, on the 2nd day of Golf Camp last week (I had forgotten to bring sunblock the first day):

Mom:  Come here boys, I need to put some sunblock on you this morning.

Captain:  Okay, but could you please not put any on the back of my neck?

Mom:  Why don’t you want any on your neck?

Captain:  So that I can be a Redneck!

Mom:  WHAT!?!  Why do you want to be a Redneck?!?

Captain:  Well… Doesn’t this world need a few more Rednecks?

I think we have been listening to our County Music Station on Pandora a little too frequently. . .

In the Woods Today. . .

The past few weeks I have been receiving afternoon emails from my husband with more pictures of what he has been seeing while working.

Some days I just love the pictures he sends. . .

Taken on June 20th
I just love seeing pictures of baby deer!

… other days, not so much!

Taken on June 27th
Yep… He was only 2 feet away from this guy before hearing the rattle.  Scary!

My Daybook :: June 27, 2011

Outside my window… another beautiful sunny day!  After two super busy weeks (Camping, Golf Camp) it was so nice to wake up with no where to go today!   Hopefully we can enjoy the lovely weather (highs in the 80’s) before the rain clouds arrive tonight.

We have also been watching this momma deer and her little baby, who have been visiting each day/evening.

I am thinking… about ordering a Prenatal Body Pillow.  Have any of you ever tried one during pregnancy and, if so, did it help?   During my last pregnancy I considered getting this one, but after looking last night I noticed this one, and one made by Boppy as well.   I’m still leaning towards trying out that first one (especially since it is the least expensive, my sister-in-law had it and loved it, and it doesn’t look quite as huge as the others), but thought I would ask here first for any thoughts and suggestions.

I am hoping… (and praying) for one of my sweet Little Flowers, as she prepares for heart surgery tomorrow.  Dear little St. Matthew Karol Snow please intercede for us!

I am praying… for the soul of my cousin Josh, who passed away in a car accident early yesterday morning, and for my Uncle Johnny, Aunt Jan, and his brothers who will miss him dearly.  May he rest in peace.

I am thankful… that despite the difficulty (or maybe I was just plain crazy) back in 2007, when my husband was on a fire assignment, I made a 1500+ mile drive with all 5 kids at the time (ages 6, 5, 3, 2, and 5 weeks at the time) on my own, to attend a family reunion.   It was the last time that all most of my mom’s family has gotten together, except for the funerals of my grandparents and uncle.   It was also the first time that I had seen/met my cousin Josh since he was a baby.

Grandpa and Grandma with just a few of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  My cousin Josh is in the back row, third from the left, in between my brother Scott (white t-shirt) and sister JoAnn (pink t-shirt).

I can’t believe how much my children have grown since that trip!

From the kitchen…  we have a Tri-Tip marinating in the fridge to cook tonight, using the rotisserie over the grill.  I think I will also grill some veggies, make a pasta salad, and cut up a watermelon.  Yum!

Learning all the time… the oldest three had SO. MUCH. FUN. attending Golf Camp last week.   I really wish it was offered again during the summer, and not just this one week.   My kids are already planning on attending next year.   On the last day, during the awards and recognition ceremony, both of the boys won prizes!  Captain won a prize for being the “Best Listener” of the week, and Rascal won a prize for “Best Overall improvement for Flying and Running.” (He explained this to me, and from what I understood it has with how you get the ball to the hole when you are chipping, through the air or along the ground.)

Living the Liturgical Year at Home… Wednesday is the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul.   We are hoping to have some friends over to celebrate this feast day with us… I just need to come up with a plan!

I am creating… this week’s Summer Bingo cards (we skipped last week, since we were so busy with Golf Camp) since I didn’t have a chance to finish them over the weekend.

I am wearing… a white cami, black maternity sundress, and Designer Satin on my toenails. I love summertime!

I am reading… through the Wreath IV Leader’s Guide for Little Flowers, trying to decide if I can modify the more advanced assignments for the younger girls in my group.   I also need to start coming up with craft ideas for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Pondering these words… on Intentional Prayer.

Noticing that… my keys have been missing for a little over a month now. I wonder if that has something to do with the fact that I happened to win the recent St. Anthony Giveaway for two SAG key fobs from Catholic Embroidery?!  I’m sure I would have found my keys by now, had I had one of these attached to my keys.  I suppose it is time to go have new keys made, and in the meantime I will attach the spare to the key fob so that I don’t lose it as well! 😉

Towards personal care… I love BioFreeze!  My lower back muscles have been so sore, as everything starts to shift around, and it really helps.

I am listening… to Redwall which is playing on the iTouch‘s iHome at the moment.  The boys choose this audio book for their Bingo Cards this week.

Around the house… way too many books that we never/no longer use.  I’m thinking about trying to spend some time selling some of all our old school books, but not sure the best way to do so.  I have used Cathswap in the past…  Maybe I should give it another shot.  It would be nice to make room for next year’s books, and also have a little extra money to purchase them with.

One of my favorite things…  my double jogging stroller! I don’t know how I would have managed the parade on Saturday morning (hubby and the two oldest boys were camping with friends) without it.

A few plans for the rest of the week:

  • Clean, clean, clean… Our home has fallen apart the last couple weeks!
  • I have an Ultrasound early Wednesday morning to check in on our new little one.
  • Sort through all the pictures from Catholic Family Camp, Little Flowers, and our small town parade… Maybe I will get around to posting a few of them!

My Little Cupcake :: Wrapping up the Baby Shower!

First of all I want to THANK YOU ALL for participating in this Virtual Baby Shower for Charlotte and her little Cupcake! I had so much fun hosting it here at Shower of Roses, and have been so inspired by everyone’s kindness and generosity.   In addition to all the prayers and advice, not only did I have enough money to order the crib by the end of the 2nd day of the Shower, all together we have an extra $210.00 to send to help cover any other nursery and baby supplies Charlotte still needs as they prepare to welcome their little blessing!

Yesterday afternoon I made the little card pictured above…  It’s hard to see in the picture, but the embossing reads “Bundle of Joy.”   On the inside it says “Congratulations on your new little cupcake!”  I signed it with the names/blogs of all the women that contributed towards the crib, and thought I would post a picture so you could all see how it looks.   Thank you all again!

Now for the rest of the prizes!!

I am so glad that I decided to have Sunshine and Shortcake choose the winner of the Cupcake Decorating Contest!  I don’t know how I would have ever been able to choose, they were all SO CUTE!

Here is what the girls had to say:

We thought all of the cupcakes were really cute! Miss Margaret’s redecorated cupcakes were very creative. Miss Barbara’s looked very fancy and exquisite. We loved Miss Amy’s and Miss Kelly’s bird themed cupcakes since our little sister’s room has lots of birds in it. We thought Miss Lorie’s cupcakes were clever the way she turned a vanilla wafer into a baby and baby stroller. We called it a “Candy Pram”!  The watermelon cupcakes look really delicious. Maybe mom will let us make some soon! Miss Jessica’s really looked like real baby rattles! But we choose Miss Jamie Jo’s duckie cupcakes as our favorite. We thought they were sooooo cute and even looked all fuzzy just like little duckies (and babies) should! Thank you all for helping us celebrate our new little sister!

Jamie’s daughters with the winning Duckie Cupcakes
Congratulations Jamie Jo!
Your new cookbook is on it’s way!

To choose the winners of the 5 Door Prizes I used an online Random Number Generator to choose 5 different commenters.  The winners are as follows:

1.  The gorgeous Mary, Flower of Flowers Tenner donated by Anne at Under Her Starry Mantle and All Beautiful Catholic Beads will be going to comment #45, Jo Murphy!

Congratulations Jo (aka Mom)!
(Note:  When I saw that my mom’s number came up for this drawing, I was tempted to draw again…   Sorry Mom!  Especially since one of my little sisters already won the 2nd place prize for Name That Baby game!  But fair is fair, and I did say that everyone was welcome to play along! lol!)

2. The Miraculous Medal Bangle and Bobbles, handmade and donated by Barbara at Praying for Grace and Prayerful Beads will be going to comment #5, Sarah from Amongst Lovely Things!

Congratulations Sarah!

3.  This lovely Our Lady of Mount Carmel Doll donated by St. Luke’s Brush will be header to comment #13, Lorie P. a blog follower in Arizona!

If you could all send me your mailing addresses I will get them to the generous Catholic Businesses that donated these great prizes. Please keep them in mind for your future online shopping!

I hope you enjoyed your “Baby Shower” Charlotte!  You are loved by so many of us here in the blogosphere.  God bless you and your sweet family!

Name that Baby :: Announcing the Winners!

It ended up being much harder to guess the Catholic Cuisine Contributors in the Name that Baby Game than I thought it would be, but thank you all for playing along despite the difficulty!   No one was able to guess everyone correctly, though a couple of you got pretty close…

I thought it was interesting to see that only half of you guessed my baby picture correctly!  I was the one holding the statue of Mary on my parents bed as a baby and I did have blond/light brown hair, at least for awhile.  Most of my siblings had light hair as babies, and it was such a surprise when our first son was born with nearly black hair!  🙂

Also, not one person guessed Mary Ellen correctly.  She was the cute baby siting in the highchair.   Anyhow, here are all the answers:

1.  Anne from Under Her Starry Mantle

2.  Amy from Knit Together

3.  Robina from Motherly Loving

4.  Kelly from The Careless Catholic

5.  Margaret from Minnesota Mom

6.  Jessica from Shower of Roses

7.  Our guest of honor, Charlotte from Waltzing Matilda

8.  Tiffany from Family at the Foot of the Cross

9.  Mary Ellen from Tales from the Bonny Blue House

10.  Lena from JOYfilled Family

11.  Mary from Our Domestic Church

12.  Jamie from Lord, Make Me a Saint

13.  Emily from God’s Canvas (Did you notice her beautiful smocked dress?)

14.  Barbara from Praying for Grace

15.  Ruth from Just Another Day in Paradise

16.  Jennifer from Family in Feast in Feria

Kelly at The Careless Catholic was the first person to have the most correct answers, so she is the winner of the lovely apron from Catholic Embroidery!   If anyone else would like to order one, it is also available for purchase at Catholic Cuisine, along with a number of other beautiful designs.

My little sister JoAnn also had 12 correct guesses, earning her the second place prize – a set of measuring cups!  Since she is a college student, getting ready to head to Rome for the first semester of her sophomore year at the University of Dallas, I think she might prefer the $10 I would have spent on the measuring cups instead.

Congratulations to Kelly and JoAnn!

I’m headed out the door to take the kids to Golf Camp and then back home for our Little Flowers Meeting this afternoon, so I won’t have time until this evening to announce the rest of the winners from our Virtual Baby Shower Games… I hope you have a wonderful day and don’t forget to stop by and wish Charlotte a very Happy Birthday!

My Little Cupcake :: Last Day to Participate!

Today is the last day to “attend” the Virtual Baby Shower for Charlotte and Cupcake!   You have until midnight to donate towards the group gift, leave a comment to be entered in the drawings for all the awesome door prizes, try to Name that Baby for a chance to win a beautiful apron, submit a link for the Cupcake Decorating Contest for a chance to win a cupcake cookbook, and try and guess Cupcake’s birth info at the Online Baby Pool for a chance to win a beautiful hand crocheted St. Therese Doll.

Thank you so very much to everyone that has contributed and/or participated already!  I started out emailing you each individually to thank you, and just haven’t been able to keep up since we have been gone/offline so much this past week.   May God reward you all for your kindness and generosity!

Happy 4th Birthday!

Yesterday our (not so) little Snuggles turned 4 years old!
We arrived home from a 4-Day Camping Trip/Retreat on Sunday night, and the older kids all started a week long Golf Camp on Monday, so I really needed to keep his birthday simple.    There were so many ideas online (I especially wanted to make this lunch and these cookies), but they will have to be saved for another time.   Instead we spent the afternoon swimming in our outdoor pool, opening gifts, and eating ice cream cake, cupcakes, and pizza!
Snuggles had been talking about his birthday for months, letting me know that he really wanted a Toy Story Birthday and that the only present he wanted was an “Up-Higher Buzz” (Up-Higher = Bigger).  You know, the one that talks, has a laser that lights up, and pop out wings…

My older boys had all the Toy Story toys but, even though I don’t think I would have gotten rid of them (Buzz and Woody were their favorites for a few years), they are gone. . .  So, I broke down and bought another overpriced plastic toy and that makes noise, but I knew that was all it would take to make our little guys birthday perfect.  🙂

He was also very excited about getting his very own box of Toy Story Fruit Snacks. . .

… and a Red Ryder Scooter

I was just so overwhelmed when I started looking at cakes online Monday, and way too tired to stay up late to make one myself, so I decided to just pick one up in town.   Unfortunately Baskin Robbins needs a 24 hour notice to decorate a cake, and my favorite local cake store just closed, so that left DQ and the first store sent me over to their other location where Olga, their Cake Decorator, was working.   Thankfully she was more than willing to work with me and found an undecorated Oreo Blizzard cake in the back (Oreo is a favorite in our home), and then she added some lime green spray and blue frosting.   I thought the chunks of Oreo in the ice cream sort of made the top of the cake look like the moon with the Green Three Eyed aliens and Buzz/Rocket from the Toy Story Candle Set on the top.

I also made some cupcakes to go along with the ice cream cake, using Toy Story Picks and Papers, but you can’t really see the cupcake liners since I made chocolate cake instead of white.  Oh well!

Snuggles was so cute blowing out her candles, and didn’t mind a bit of help from his little sister.
On his way home from work Daddy picked up pizza from Papa Murphy’s Pizza Planet, which was another hit with our picky little eater.    Overall he had a wonderful birthday!

My Daybook :: June 21, 2011

Outside my window… it’s a beautiful day! We just got home from the golf course and are about to blow up our little pool (ours is blue) and/or set up the sprinklers.  It is our hottest day so far this year (at just over 90 degrees) and the kids are loving the sunny weather.

I am thinking… about everything that needs to get done this week.  (finish unpacking and continue washing the mountains of laundry from our 4 day trip to Catholic Family Camp over the weekend, Golf Camp every day, celebrate Snuggles birthday today, Little Flowers on Friday, etc.)   It nearly put me into a full blown panic attack yesterday afternoon and I ended up just shutting it all out and collapsed for a two hour nap.   I feel much better now, despite the fact that I still need to check all those things off that list.

I am thankful… that our little Rose was able to finally meet her Godparents over the weekend!

Rose’s Godfather has been a dear friend since I was a teenager, and was one of the groomsmen at our wedding.  We finally met his sweet wife (a graduate from University of Dallas) a couple years ago at Family Camp.  They have five children ages 1-6, plus 5 precious little ones in heaven.
Fr. Jim Costigan of the Fathers of Mercy was our Retreat Master this year!

From the kitchen…  lots of leftover snacks, drinks, and smore supplies from Catholic Family Camp.   Not much else…  I am going to need to go to the store again soon.   Perhaps I will call Hubby and ask him to pick up a couple pizza’s from Papa Murphy’s Pizza Planet for our birthday dinner!

Learning all the time… our summer vacation is under way and this week our oldest three are participating in a local Golf Camp each day!  They were all very excited when, after introducing the coaches and high school golfers that volunteered to help, the coach asked if anyone knew Kevin and David Murphy (my little brothers).   All of my kids hands shot up and big grins covered their faces.   One of the high school golfers then went on to tell all the kids that Kevin just qualified to compete at the Junior World Golf Championships.  Pretty exciting!

Living the Liturgical Year at Home… today is the feast of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, patron of youth.   It is also a “middle name day” in our home and so I hope to take a little time tomorrow afternoon for some more Saintly Summer Fun.  It is the perfect time to learn a little more about this great saint.

I am creating… a “Buzz Birthday Cake” for my little Snuggles, with the help of a kind employee at Dairy Queen, and some very simple Toy Story Cupcakes.

I am wearing… my bathing suit shorts and top.  I think I am going to enjoy the water and sunshine with the kids.

Noticing that… nap time is over. I had better cut this post short and go and blow up that swimming pool!

A few plans for the rest of the week:

Golf Camp All Week
Celebrate Snuggles’ 4th Birthday
Little Flowers Meeting
Our small town Parade and Festivities

A Picture thought I am sharing:

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
