Bandon-by-the-Sea

{We’ve been stuck indoors since last Friday, due to a local wildfire that has caused smoke filled skies and unhealthy to hazardous air quality, so I’m sorting through pictures today and trying to finish up a few posts that have been sitting in my drafts folder. Looking at these pictures has me wishing we could go back to the ocean (or anywhere with blue skies!), and praying that this doesn’t happen anytime soon!}

We began our 2014-2015 school year with a camping trip to a little seacoast town and ended up finishing our school year by heading back to Bandon-by-the-Sea! One of our favorite priests in our diocese was planning a Corpus Christi Mass & Procession at his parish and had asked Sean and our older boys to help so we quickly packed for the trip and left immediately after our End-of-School party!

Despite the crazy coastal winds, it was a beautiful day and it was such a joy to have the opportunity to attend a Corpus Christi procession this year.  Here are the rest of the pictures from our weekend at the coast.

Morning Prayers with Dad while Mom makes Breakfast
Veggies sautéed with Coconut Oil and Trader Joe’s Garlic Salt and Sausage … one of my AIP breakfast staples. Yum!

.: Coquille River Lighthouse :.

It was way too windy and sand kept getting in her eyes… Time to head back. In the meantime borrowing my sunglasses helped put a smile back on her face.

.: Bike Rides :.

We are able to pack along 5 bikes with this bike rack

The coastal winds (35 mph gusts!) made it incredibly challenging (and we were just little sore the next day!) but our three oldest children and I rode our bikes (against the wind most of the way) the three miles back to our campsite.  It was a great workout! 🙂

.: Campfire, Crock Pot Chicken, S’mores & Roasted Bananas :.

Quick and Easy Crock Pot Chicken (chicken tenderloins covered with BBQ sauce) cooked in the tent while we were out playing all day! Not AIP friendly for me, but the rest of the family enjoyed it along with the grilled veggies.
While the kids roasted marshmallows I stuffed a couple bananas with cocoa nibs and coconut.
They were, um, definitely not s’mores…  😉

.: Face Rock Creamery :.

On Sunday, after the Corpus Christi Mass & Procession, we all went out for Ice Cream at Face Rock Creamery

.: At the Beach with Father :.

.: Another Campfire :.

.: One Last Visit to the Beach :.

After four days of camping at the coast… All camped out!

Sponsor Love :: Quarterly Update & Current Specials

It’s time for another quarterly update on my amazing sponsors here at Shower of Roses.

I have a few new sponsors to introduce you to this quarter which include an inspiring new book for Catholic mothers, the coolest saint charms ever, and a website with darling dolls and books for children.

I decided to take this opportunity to share some pictures I’ve taken this past year that have not yet made it onto the blog. Don’t miss all the specials and coupon codes included as well!

Please welcome my new sponsors:

See You In Heaven
The Life and Writings of Rosie Gill

“This book is more than a daughter’s beautiful tribute to her mother. I believe that the Catholic Church will recognize that it is the story of a saint. A saint is a model Christian, someone who shows us how to live the Christian life by actually living that life herself, someone we can follow because she has followed Christ. Rosie Gil’s story is pure and simple but abundantly profound and deeply moving. A true inspiration.” – Dale Alhquist, President, American Chesterton Society

“Rosie knew that motherhood was the highest vocation for a woman, and she gave all her heart to that vocation. This story of her life is a creative and inspirational-handbook-for Christian Mothers everywhere!” – Father Angelus Shaughnessy OFM Cap.

I have actually had a copy of this sweet book sitting on my nightstand since it was sent to me from one of the Sister Servants at Casa Maria this past spring and have been meaning to share it with you all!
Sitting on the front porch swing and reading this past March while watching the children play in the yard…
I paused to take a picture of my new book and Bud popped up saying “Peek-a-boo!” #ilovemylittlephotobomber

Tiny Saints
Check out the coolest saint charms ever at www.shoptinysaints.com!

I first ordered a couple of these cute little saint charms to include in our older boys’ Easter Baskets this year and featured them in my 100+ Easter Gift Ideas post.  My boys LOVED them!

In fact, our oldest son loved his little St. Patrick charm so much that he told me, “I know you and Dad are going to have a lot of extra expenses this summer with our camps and road trip… There is only one thing I want for my birthday this year… Could you please get me a couple more of those Tiny Saints?!?”   I just love this boy of ours!

We ended up getting him more than just one gift, but I made sure to tuck a few more Tiny Saints (St. James, St. Ignatius, and St. Maximilian Kolbe) inside the pockets of his new backpack. Here are a couple pictures he took recently (on the feasts of St. James and St. Ignatius!) of his new saints attached to his backpack zippers:

Jacob’s Toy Box and Books

I’m so happy to share that Christine has recently reopened Jacob’s Toy Box and Books! I first shared about these darling dolls back in 2013 and my children still love playing with Brother Hubert and Father Martin.

In addition to the website you can also follow the Facebook page for updates!

Right now you can receive FREE SHIPPING on all Child of God dolls through August 8th with coupon code: Help!

A special thank you to all my returning sponsors!

Our distinctive line combines original art and favorite Catholic prayers that appeal to all ages and transform pillows from the ordinary to the divine! Honor a special occasion or make any occasion special with the gift of a joyful, lasting (and personalizable) Prayer Pillowcase. We’re always working on new designs and hope you’ll visit again soon to see even more ways to help your loved ones begin and each day with a prayerful heart.

In addition to a new prayer book with an embroidered cover, Snuggles also received a personalized Prayer Pillowcase for his First Holy Communion on July 24th. He was pretty excited!

Catholic Child
Be sure to visit Catholic Child to find inspiring gifts for Catholic youth – from toddlers to teens!

Culture of Life Studies

Just before school ended this past year, I started using the new Life Is Precious Culture of Life Unit Study for Elementary Students from American Life League with my younger children. The program, which will help parents and teachers instill a solid pro-life foundation in their students, uses picture books to explore age-appropraite culture of life themes such as life as a preborn child, being uniquely created by God, the need to protect the innocent, and defending firmly held beliefs in the face of adversity.” Our summer has been full with camps and road trips, but we are all looking forward to continuing this program in the fall!

Visit the Culture of Life Studies website and follow the Facebook page for more information and to order your own copy!

The Monks of Norcia
BENEDICTA: Marian Chant from Norcia is the latest release from De Montfort Music!
Inspiring, beautiful music of Chant at it’s very best – from Italy by The Monks of Norcia. BENEDICTA: Marian Chant from Norcia is the title for this new recording of 33 tracks of Gregorian chant, including favorite Marian antiphons such as “Regina Caeli” and “Ave Regina Caelorum” but also previously unrecorded chant versions of responsories and a piece originally composed by the monks ( Nos Qui Christi Iugum, ) Some pieces are sung by the entire group, some by smaller ensembles of monks and others by soloists, imbuing ‘BENEDICTA’ with a variety of sound. Recorded on location at the monastery in Norcia, Italy, the album was produced by 11-time Grammy Award-winning producer Christopher Alder and engineered by Grammy-Award winning engineer Jonathan Stokes.”

“Behold Publications, LLC is more than just a publisher! Family owned and operated since its founding in 1999, we have developed great Catholic clubs like the Little Flowers Girls’ Club and Blue Knights Catholic Boys’ Clubs for Catholic girls and boys ages 5 and up. What makes these clubs unique is that they are at their core faithfully Catholic. We don’t “tack on” Catholic identity as other clubs might, but begin and end with a Catholic world view. We also believe that local clubs best operate the way they see fit, so there is no national organization, policies, registration or dues. Groups can easily adjust the program to fit their local needs. Behold Publications also produce a line of historical fiction based on American history and American saints for ages 7-15.”

Many of you have noticed that my Little Flowers Notebook Pages are no longer available for download here at Shower of Roses. If you have sent me an email asking about them and I haven’t responded to it yet, please accept my apologies… I just haven’t been able to keep up!

I recently signed a contract with Behold Publications to incorporate my supplemental notebook pages into the official Little Flowers Girls’ Club ® program! Now that the pages will be used commercially, it has been necessary to remake each page (in the very little free time that I’ve had) with new high-resolution saint and flower images for which the publisher has reproduction rights. I’m almost done with all the pages, including pages for the new Wreath IV! The new updated pages should be available from Behold Publications soon. Thank you all for your patience!

On the Feast of St. Christopher

“There’s another river!”
Our family is home again after 25 days on the road, traveling over 3,500 miles (Sean drove the RV and I drove the mini-van) through five states! We explored a couple National Parks, spent time with dear friends and extended family, made many new friends, attended Catholic summer camps (the four oldest), celebrated our oldest son’s 15th birthday, and ended our trip with a First Confession and First Holy Communion yesterday, followed by a Second Holy Communion at 6:30 Mass this morning before beginning the long drive home. I have so many pictures I’m hoping to share after we unpack and get some sleep… Happy feast of St. Christopher, patron of travelers!
“Grant me O Lord a steady hand and watchful eye.
That no one shall be hurt as I pass by.
Thou gavest life, I pray no act of mine may take away
or mar that gift of Thine.
Shelter those, dear Lord, who bear me company,
From the evils of fire and all calamity.
Teach me to use my car for others’ need;
Nor miss through love of undue speed
the beauty of the world; that thus I may
with joy and courtesy go on my way.
St. Christopher, holy patron of travellers,
protect me and lead me safely to my destiny.”
– St. Christopher’s Prayer for Motorists

First Communion Day

Prayers after his First Confession

“Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, be my Salvation.”
with Bread of Life Cake Topper
Great Uncle Tom, lots of new friends, and “Uncle Father!”
After First Communion: Thanksgiving

The Body of our Lord, Jesus Christ, preserve my soul unto life everlasting! I possess Him Who gives eternal life. With firm and confident Faith, I believe, O Jesus, that Thou hast words of eternal life. Thy Flesh is meat indeed. I have received Thy sacred Body. Thou art truly present in my soul, my Lord and my God; Thou art most intimately united with me. Oh, how can I sufficiently adore Thee! Thou art my Lord and my God – I, Thy unworthy creature; Thou, my Father and Savior, hast taken pity on me: Thou lovest me, it is Thy delight to be with me. How can I, my Jesus, thank Thee for this grace! Magnify the Lord, my soul, for He hath done wonderful things to thee! Sweet, merciful Jesus, vouchsafe to look kindly upon my poor and pitiful gratitude.
I thank Thee, O Jesus!

End-of-School Interviews for 2014-2015

A number of years ago I was inspired by Sarah (who we finally got to meet in person this past week!)  to start creating these End-of-School Interviews for each of my children and we’ve been making them every year since. Here are this year’s interviews:

Captain’s Favorite Books: Scorpion Mountain, Band of Brothers and Door to the North
Ranger’s Favorite Books: Fr. Finn’s “Famous Three” (Tom Playfair, Harry Dee, Percy Winn – also available directly from TAN), St. Thomas More of London, and Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library

(We also just finished listening to this audio book again. So good!)
{I can’t seem to find the interviews I created for my two preschoolers… I’m still in the process of transferring everything over to the new computer. Hopefully I’ll run across them, otherwise I’ll have to recreate them sometime and then update this post.}
Past End-of School Interviews:

Our summer is flying by so quickly… and I still need to finalize our plans for the upcoming school year. How are your plans coming along?

It made us so happy to finally spend some time with Sarah and her lovely family!

While sat on the beach and chatted, the little ones had a blast filling a box with rocks…

Rose and Posy also became good friends real fast.
They were so cute to watch as they played in the water and shared their snacks.

Teacher Appreciation Gifts {with Free Printables!}

At the end of our school year, with a little inspiration from gift ideas on Pinterest, the children helped create cards for their tutors using PicMonkey, public domain clip art, and gift cards from Target, Barnes & Noble, Dairy Queen, and Dutch Bros!

Thanks for keeping me on TARGET this school year!

End-of-School Party at the Family Fun Center

Well, hello! I didn’t mean to disappear again… Our summer has been full! I feel like I’m on a roller coaster ride and hanging on for dear life! 😉 We’ve been having a great summer and I’ll try and share some of what we have been up to in the next week or two, but in the meantime (now that I actually have wi-fi for a few minutes… long story!) I thought I’d go back to our last week of school and finish up a few posts that have been sitting in my drafts folder since the beginning of June…
Our local charter hosted an End-of-School party at the Family Fun Center to celebrate. They rented the whole park from 9:00-12:00 for a private party with unlimited activities and it was such a special treat for our large family!
.: Miniture Golf :.
First golf lesson. From his Daddy. ❤
.: Kids Kart Corral :.
.: Go Karts :.
.: Bumper Boats :.

.: Cactus Jack’s Playhouse :.
After the party we headed home, finished packing the RV, and then left for the coast to camp for the weekend and also attend a beautiful Corpus Christi rehearsalMass & Procession.  It was such a great way to end our school year!

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.
